    Coming from China and needing an internet connection to launch puts an immediate stop for me. Especially since the CCP is very adept at facial recognition systems. I do like the face tracking method, but I hope a non-Chinese company can do the job better and cheaper. I'll stay with TrackIR for now. But great review.

      Depending on the product, you can often run your own little proxy that either impersonates home base, or one that records everything passing through and keeps a eye out for anything dodgy. BEEF proxy is one of the top of my head, but it must be getting old now, probably better/faster things available
      Another option is wireshark, maybe paired with a decent network adaptor, and it can also sniff USB and other busses nowadays

    You are aware that the Chinese government is in the process of creating a worldwide facial recognition database, so this may be the reason it needs an Internet connection. I know of no software, other than subscription software, that requires an Internet connection to operate.

      I hope we will not be misled by stupid political propaganda. Practice makes perfect. I believe that Chinese companies just want to make good products. Before slandering and defaming others, it is best to make sure that you are not deceived by false information. Internet connection is used for S/N validation and to enable the driver. I ran Wireshark capture to see if there was anything sending back to the server, but there was none. Which means you can play without the internet as long as you pass the first "validation" process.

    Since not one person that shows this thing answers the question about low light, here is my answer after testing tonight.
    Low light was very good. I had all of my lights out other than my monitor which is about 21" from my face, but when in DCS is at the beginning of an instant action flight, where there's that dialog box that you must click "Fly" on? Well, during that look at how dark the background is and how little light. During that my room was very dark and I could still see it working in the background. A tad shaky that dark, and I wasn't going for that much darkness. My test was just one monitor. With all your lights off running more than one monitor you should have nothing to worry about.

    As someone who has used a VR headset, the only issue I can't answer is if it requires an Internet connection. However, the one I used was not prone to most, if not all, of the problems mentioned, so if you have the money and don't want the issues, a VR headset would be my recommendation. The only issue I have had with the VR headset is that you may feel slightly disoriented when you are done.

      @@evanhinkle5136 it is a simple fact that to look around in a VR headset you have to look around. It's kind of the point of VR and what makes it immersive. Weras with these tracking things you only your head a little bit to get the full view movement (depending on how you set it up).
      That is obviously not realistic and less immersive. But people may prefer that over realism for a gam...simulator. In any case, the number of VR headsets with "realistic" resolution is tiny and comes with massive hardware requirement. Index or Oculus (had Rift S before) still have visible grid, whatever their marketing tells you. It always looks a bit like a 80's monitor.
      I now have a HP reverb V2 which has excellent resolution. It is like looking out of the window. To power that resolution with the Hz you need in VR you need a serious machine though! Or reduce the visuals drastically. It also has massive issues with the rings in the lenses and not great controller tracking (irrelevant to DCS). But it needs no external tracking setup which makes tracking less good (also irrelevant to DCS) but SOOOOO much more convenient to setup and use elsewhere. But still no sign of a perfect VR system that does everything well.

I have no issues with it to warrant changing, but if something were to happen that I need to buy another, I would definitely consider this. I am also debating the Oculus VR headset. But until the need arises, I am staying put (knowing Karma a blast of lightning will strike now, sending my Track IR Camera up in smoke and flames, or a stray Maverick from the F16's that fly over my house will hit nearby, sending fragments into my IR camera)

  • @ernestwinslow7316

    One of the reason I find vr very viable beside the immersion aspect is cable management. My trackir 5 is tucked up far away for years now because of having to deal with all the cables and head gear inconveniences. This cubesim face tracking option looks superb. However It is hard to fathom why a head tracking device for computer games would have to contact home(manufacturers server) to function. That aspect of this device is really suspicious and spooky. The data(facial data) collection theory is not far fetched in this case. I see a lot of cons against vr. VR has got immersion going for it and that alone is important for me in flightsim.

      You need at least the Supercarrier and a jet compatible aircraft before they would consider you joining them.
      People usually recommend the F-18 Hornet as a first Supercarrier compatible module as it is a good 'all-rounder', apparently. I purchased the F-16 Viper myself as it seemed the best air to air jet at the time, but it isn't Supercarrier compatible, even though it has a tail hook. The hook is for testing the engine and emergency brake failure landings only I believe.
      They recently nerfed the F-16 RADAR as well, but it is still good.
      I'm more into the WWII and the Cold War era technology. The Enigma Cold War server is really good at this time and keeps getting better.
      The Storm of War WWII server was my favorite server, but they quit a while back which infuriated quite a few people as most virtual WWII pilots considered it the best. Some people have tried to pick up the pieces and make another great WWII server just like the Storm of War one, but I have not checked recently to see if they are as good. I stopped flying after Storm of War ended until I heard about the Enigma server.
      There is a lot to learn for modern 4th gen aircraft in DCS. So much so, that you can have a two month break from flying in DCS and then forget certain things about the RADAR and computer systems. DCS also has updates at least once to sometimes three times a month which is really great but can change some button bindings sometimes to.
      Always back up your control inputs for each aircraft if you can. Chucks DCS aircraft guides are a great tool for learning modules as well.

    I would almost rather pay an extra $50 for Tobii Eye Tracker 5 or save money and use a decent web cam along with AITrack. Which route someone should go with depends on their situation, but if you already have a good webcam, trying AITrack with OpenTrack is a free alternative that might give similar performance to what this offers.

      I use Tobii 5... love hate relationship. Overall big yes but the big cons are it has very finicky curves and it is impossible to shut down the eye tracking and use the head tracking only, as they give that as an option but it gets very jumpy when eye tracking is off.

    Thanks for the detailed review. Surprised you didn't include FaceTrack NoIR in the mix, as it's potentially a less expensive solution (if you own a webcam) using a very similar technology. I also think that trying to compare a 2d tracking solution with a VR solution is like apples and oranges, only similarity is both track your head. Misses all the benefits of a 'quality' VR solution, notwithstanding the additional cost of such a solution. A well tracked (lighthouse) VR solution, has a 1:1 head movement and will wipe the floor with any other tracking solutions. IMHO.

    • @WyvernFalken
      @WyvernFalken 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I compare with VR because there's generally two different solutions for head motion in DCS/MSFS/XP11 etc and that is OpenTrack and VR. One's less immersion but much cheaper, and the other is more immersion, but lower game resolution, very demanding on GPUs, and is typically unaffordable to most. Just because you can afford it doesn't mean everybody else can too. Keep that in mind.

  • @Shrike200
    @Shrike200 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've got some software for my phone which does a very good job of this, but for much less money.
    BUT, my question is based on problems I had with that software - does this device compensate for 'off axis' head movement, in other words does it account for the fact that (for example) when you move your head towards the monitor to look at an instrument more closely, your head isn't moving towards the camera, but towards the monitor? In those cases, the softyware I was using on my phone (Face Track NoIR?) would move my virtual view 'off axis' (ie. from its perspective, I was moving my head closer, but also upwards - which reflected as such in game). So when I moved my head 'towards' the instrument (screen), because the camera wasn't located on the screen, it would show relative movement away from it's line of sight as well.
    If you could setup the geometry of your hardwares physical layout in the software, it would be a simple matter for these kind of devices to account for this relative motion. TrackIR (which I use all the time) works well enough because it's mounted on top of my monitor, which is actually closer to my eye line than at the bottom of the monitor - the obvious solution is just to mount this device in the same place I suppose, I juse feel like a software solution to the relative layour problem would be ideal.
    Hopefully I've explained the problem well enough, I'm not sure if other people feel like this is as much of problem as I do though. As I said, the cellphone based software I used had absolutely no problems with the tracking part, but it was difficult to mount my phone to the top of my monitor, so all other locations suffered badly from the problem.

    • @WyvernFalken
      @WyvernFalken 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has six degrees of freedom. It will read your forward motion to look at the screen and move your view in world forward. Depending on where the sensor is in relation to your face and monitor, it may read an upward trend motion. That can be offset by reducing the motion of the Z axis.

      That's why you set the curves etc. You can manually set how exaggerated the pilots head turns in relation to your own. If it works well for you out of the box, or after a week or two of adaptation, keep it.
    If you still can't get it working well after 4 weeks with lots of tweaking and troubleshooting, then it's usually not going to work. I tried many months and still no good result.

I even totally stopped playing all flight sim games for 3+ months, in an attempt to get rid of some of my muscle memory with TrackIR5. Yet when I tried AimxyZ again it is still super uncomfortable. The tracking is just always a bit delayed and unreliable for me.
      I left its user group after their personal attack on me but I still try to give AimxyZ a chance whenever anyone asks me about head tracking choices.
      I'll still keep my general response to anyone asking about my opinion: in rare cases AimxyZ just won't work for some people. If you can buy it from a store which has a good return policy, go try it. In a hot summer when you don't want to wear anything on your head, this is the best tracking option second to none.

      @@qfan8852 I clearly remember that in the Q group at that time, everyone was helping you, especially the boss of AimxyZ himself. Even after you left, he never said that you were "liars", "competitors", and "impatient". So We still don't know why you left in anger. As for personal attacks, I remember that other users think you are unreasonable, but they do not represent Aimxy's attitude. I personally suggest that you change to an ordinary computer for testing, and do not run it in a virtual machine. For AI computing, virtual machines will bring unexpected results.

      @@Eclipse-nf3ur I do not use Virtual Machine for DCS and AimxyZ. All my comments about AimxyZ's unsatisfactory tracking performance is based on physical installation.
      As for accusation of "liars":
      You can see how hostile Aimxyz boss is when he curses users who say Aimxyz has bad tracking when wearing glasses. This is on his bilibili channel.
      Again and again I have to say bad tracking is not a general issue but he's in general attacking the unfortunate users who exprience tracking usses when wearing glasses.

      @@qfan8852 But your computer is really unusual, I personally suggest you try to test it with a normal computer. I also wear glasses, as the owner of Aimxy demonstrated, I don't feel that wearing glasses has any effect on the use effect. Moreover, there are more than 700 users in the user group, and more than half of them also wear glasses. If there is a problem, it will explode early. Have you ever thought about this problem? Of course, if you don't want to solve the problem, but just vent your dissatisfaction, I don't think I need to say anything. I am just an ordinary user and I am very satisfied with AimxyZ.
