    Actually Paris has a quite big Hip Hop culture. And good clubs as well, but it's true that you really have to search for them. You just need to know someone who knows the city and people in that circle. They're less commercial and more underground. But I agree, it's not as huge as elsewhere. It took me 4 years after living here to find good Hip Hop parties.

      Chillin' with Cheila you can find the parties mostly on Fb events: Café Barge Sunday Groove is where it's at lol, Le Papillon Fridays is also good. Look out for HHLS (Hip Hop Loves Soul) on Wednesdays, Wanderlust, Wattsmyname, Make it Clap Agency.There is defintely way more, but those are the best I think.

    I love Paris, but I hate how rude and arrogant a lot of Parisians are... I'm Dutch and my French is not great. However, I still tried to order a Subway sandwich in French. But the employee then clearly got frustrated and angry because apparentely I was too slow in ordering... I was like... Tu es RUDE et je suis THE F*** OUTTA HERE.

      +Deniz Ece i think that's because it's the cultural heritage that people who are foreign to your country look for when they visit it because it must appear to them as the most popular custom, even if they're totally cliché^^ i personally would really like to discover the germany as it is today, but in order to do that i'll probably generalise alot at first because i think that's what strangers tend to do when they're introduced to a new country? idk haha

    about the "bonjour" in france: I think the main difference between french and americans is the reason why one says "hello" and "have a good day" : for the americans its seems more like something they say because they are friendly whereas in french it is considered a sign of politness and respect.

  • @imanabd1360
    @imanabd1360 6 ปีที่แล้ว +171

    I've been living in Paris since 2010 and this is 100% accurate!!! 😮 About the "bonjour, merci, bonne journée" thing, I think it's extremely polite (which is a very good thing) but I find it way overdone and not necessarily REAL. I mean, I go to ask a shopkeeper about sth for example and first off, I can get a grumpy look (I wear hijab, you know what I'm sayin' :P) and then I get a proper cold and grumpy "au revoir" in the end.. and in my head I'm like what's the point of even saying a grumpy "au revoir" bruv?! It's a bit ridiculous because sometimes, Parisian politness and "courtoisie" can be really fake which makes it unnecessary to me.. For example in my homeland Morocco, we don't tend to say all these "s'il vous plaît", "bonne journée" and thank eachother over anything and nothing, but we're way more warm-hearted (and French people who visited Morocco themselves often say that Moroccans are). I don't think one needs to act like a Parisian to be nice and polite but this issue what Parisians and Frenchies expect from foreigners in general.. 😅

    • @Noumm
      @Noumm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Iman Abd ahah i'm French and it's in all the country, we are polite and idk why you thought it's too much. The respect is so a value I really can't explain,but it what it is. 😂 We found in other countries that people are very rude to not said these words it's so important

    • @imanabd1360
      @imanabd1360 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Awa Bari It depends on how you define "respect" and I didn't say I find it exaggerated haha I'll explain: Sometimes you don't need to use all that bunch of words to show respect you know.. and what I said I found rude is how the person doesn't look like he/she respects you but those expressions are still there.. In this case it has no use. Like Damon pointed out, there are waiters out there who would serve you as if you were less than nothing but then tell you "bonne journée" and stuff.. What's the point of faking politeness if one is basically rude?! This is what I meant 😊 I guess this is mainly common in the workplace.. Tbh I find that many French in the workplace are too polite but like we say "aigris de la vie" (This is not only coming from me as a Moroccan but from my German friend as well!), and I think that this + being very polite are 2 contradictory things. For example when I go to an SNCF or RATP agent or sometimes even with a Carrefour cashier etc... they're often cold and "aigris de la vie" indeed, while once shouldn't be like so when they do a job that makes them in contact with people all the time. And again, I see that there is no need of telling someone all those cute words if they don't really feel them. Thank you for replying :-)

    • @jadeloudni2005
      @jadeloudni2005 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Iman Abd I do understand what you mean but you confuse two very différent things being Nice and Being Polite, being polite is a basic thing you don't have to like the person you are talking to but you still have to be polite so saying good bye to someone you've talked to is so normal but being nice and warm hearted is less common here in Paris.

    • @Noumm
      @Noumm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Iman Abd Yeah I understand,well it's strange and true bc sometimes we're rude and polite,but like JAde said,being polite even if you're rude, for us is more important than being nice

    Petite astuce pour le métro : il y a une carte qui s'appelle Navigo Découverte (il te suffit d'1 photo et d'1 carte d'identité pour l'avoir) la 1ere fois tu la payes 5€ et ensuite tu peux la recharger en fonction de tes besoins 1, 2,3 jours, 1 semaine et c'est souvent moins cher que d'acheter 20 tickets de métro

    I'm glad you did this vlog. I live in the UK and visit the USA frequently on holiday. Our family was talking about how odd it was that we never went to France even though it was only about a 1.5 hour train ride to Paris. SO!!! We took a 'rode' trip to Paris for the 'weekend'. However, once we got to France all we kept saying was, ' Did we say something to insult that waiter??' or 'Why is the store clerk so angry with us?' EVERYONE was rude. I mean REALLY RUDE. We are clearly British looking (not American). I just think the French hate everyone who is not French. And all that Euro crap about Americans being 'shallow' -- it may be true but I REALLY appreciate people in NYC or Chicago smiling at me and saying that it is nice having me there (makes me feel welcome).

      Hello you, first of all, I love england, I spend a year in Bournemouth but whatever. I just want to see that (and 90% of the french population will say the same), Paris is noooot france, juste go to Lille for exemple , it is much closer from england, less than 20 pounds and about 5 hours from London just so you know :) I'm french and I really don't consider myself as a rude person, most of us are really open mided :) Please don't take parisian as an example, I don't know why but paris has the tendency to make people rude (of course it is not true for everyone, I know really nice people in Paris) even when they were not before, cause most of the parisian are not actually from Paris initialy. Anyway, I am not gonna be the first person to say it but France is amazing and there is so much more to see than Paris :) My BF is british and Lille-London is cheap to do :)

They pushed their way through the metro entrance bumping into him, 1 boy took the cash and 1 tried to take the wallet. Luckily it dropped and he was able to recover it before the boys took off in opposite direction. Another incident at the train station. A lady approached our group offering to hail taxi vans for all 12 of us. She said 30 euros for the ride. Wasn't bad considering there was a lot of us plus luggage. We filled into the van and last minute she asked for a "hailing fee" of 20 euros on top of the fair. We didn't mind as long as we got to our hotel. In the taxi, we saw the meter was going up even though we had agreed on a 30 euro flat fee. Didn't think much of it, just thought he left it on and we would still pay the flat rate. Suddenly we were stopped by 2 French men a few blocks away. 1 guy questioned the driver who was covering the meter. Turns out the drivers were severely over charging us for the taxi fare. The 2 French men were undercover police. They were watching us the whole time while we were at the train station. Luckily they were there to save us and we ended up getting a free ride. Paris is absolutely beautiful, but you have to be careful.

    • @k.v.7681
      @k.v.7681 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Well, in pools boardshorts are banned for a reason: hygiene and material preservation. Boardshorts and the like lose fibers that get stuck in filters, can be worn outside of the pool and thus contain urine residue and such. Plus, a speedo is tight. So the hair inside, stays inside. No pubic hair floating around, so it's more clean, and safe, since hair can cut when moist. (Most pools with a slide will force you to have a bathing cap, you cannot swim with your hair floating around). So Madam Homicide, I think it's more gross to swim surounded by the pubes of the 200 people that used the water before I went in than to see the shadow of the shape of a dick (that can honestly be quite pleasing on the eye depending on it's owner).

    Damon it's bonjour or au revoir form is just a polite way to acknowledge the person who works in the shop. Obviously they are there to help you because it's their job but acknowledging them as a human being is very important here. It's not like in the sates where you are going to get a "how you doing" (it's an actual question people!!) and usually a clerk will try to sell you or promote a product (some store do that in France but it's not mainstream) I think as well property is very important in France like owning a territory, maybe you have notice that you have fences around houses in France which is not necessarily true in the states. Consequently to that extend stores can be seen as territory that you are about to encroached so it is important to greet their occupants.

    • @melissamwidman
      @melissamwidman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      in the states we ask "how are you" but its not like a real question. its just filler words basically. if im at work and I say "hi, how are you" the person will respond "hi" or "hi how are you" and nobody really says how they're doing lol occasionally they'll say, "good" but thats it. I didn't realize that it was considered strange until europeans would come into the shop and give me strange looks when I asked them that.

      C'est pas des graves manquements mais c'est un signe de respect mutuel tout de même, surtout quand t'es au travail.

    • @manoncamous8698
      @manoncamous8698 6 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Je pense que c'est parce que aux US en disant "Excuse- me, blablabla" c'est déjà considéré comme suffisamment poli. De manière générale, en France, on a beaucoup plus cette culture de la politesse un peu distante, on s'adresse surtout pas de façon familière aux personnes qu'on connait pas ou peu, alors qu'aux US j'ai l'impression que les relations avec des inconnus sont plus familières. En France, ce sera pas poli d'être trop familier, alors tu restes sobre et tu dis bonjour. Aux US, ce serait pas poli d'être trop distant.. enfin c'est l'impression que j'ai, ptet que je me trompe.

    It's kind of funny to me that after all the time Damon's spent living and coming back to Paris, he still somewhat "exotifies" the city and the culture. I think I stopped doing that as soon as I realised that I love everything about Paris except for the people. Having lived there for 3 years, it's unfortunately easier to find rude people than ones that aren't in Paris. I really hate having to stereotype people, but Parisians are in majority short tempered and sometimes quite hostile when they're on edge.

    Oh man, this was hilarious! And pretty darn spot-on too.
    As a native French, I've always hated Paris (well, especially Parisians, not gonna lie -- I still remember those rude waiters by the Seine when I was in Bercy. Most stressful tea time I've ever had.) because of its nasty smells, needlessly high prices and such, but at the same time, there's just too much to be done there. Maybe renting in Paris isn't worth it, but going there to visit and enjoy what the capital city has to offer definitely is, if you know non-touristy places to go and eat.

    I agree with Paris being sketch! I'm from Brazil and have been living in Boston for the past 10 years... on my first day in Paris I was robbed by a pickpocket (lost my small bag with phone and 300€)

      Andressa Mendonça it s so sad but I am sorry you need to be careful tourist are easy targets for pickpockets, and if nobody tell you that when you came in Paris it s not normal. Tourists now are so wakeful, there are less accidents

    I was born French and I think you're being very kind, Damon. Paris is gorgeous as a city and France's artistic heritage is great and all, but living there is an every day struggle even for locals. The sadly infamous ubiquitous smell in the city & the general (aggressive) attitude & (hypocritical and nonchalant) mentality are unbearable to me. Furthermore, the sense of sketchiness as a woman makes matters even worse. Besides, I don't find things to be that different in provincial towns. Anybody who wants to become someone in France/French-speaking Belgium has to go to Paris sooner or later, anyway, so many people behave like wannabe Parisians.
    I always found that "Paris est un top model qui se néglige" (a top model without hygiene). Such a waste! I wish we had fines like in Singapore to make up for the crazy taxes and let them be paid by those who actively degrade the city. Only then could we all really appreciate fully the original architectural splendor of this city and surely, more city dwellers would find a new healthier pride in their city.

    I really wish there was specific areas for smokers. I went to South Korea a few weeks ago and before going I heard people saying Koreans smoke a lot but honestly I feel like nobody smokes in South Korea because they have specific areas for smokers.

    • @JenniferPark00
      @JenniferPark00 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, smoking in public area such as street, bus stations and any restaurants or cafes is strictly prohibited by law in Korea. This is a way of respect non-smokers.
      People must respect who has differences.
