- The Team descend upon the picture postcard perfect Oxfordshire town of Burford to respond to very special challenge - from Time Team's own Professor Mick Aston. They have just three days to uncover a medieval hospital under the front lawn whilst searching for Anglo Saxons in the vegetable garden.
it adds a whole extra level to these episodes when they bring the kids in, i could watch Paul Blinkhorn work with the little ones all day, he's perfect at it!
Mick was such a great teacher. I live on another continent yet I have learned so much from him in the decade or so since I discovered Time Team. God bless him.
The way they got the kids from the school next door involved, and even laid out the information at the end to those kids has swiftly made this my favorite episode....
Love TT and sadly miss the exuberance of Mick and Phil's camaraderie .

When you watch Time Team, you really get the impression that you know these people, that they are friends of yours.

I really do lament the passing of Mick, but this episode is truly a tribute to his passion regarding Anglo-Saxon and early conquest occupation. I'm sad, but oddly satisfied that Mick Aston is happy in the afterlife knowing that his passion has been passed on to those of us that have followed... Rest in Peace Mick, the dream and passion live on!!
@alanrtment porter *Atheism* doesn't necessarily preclude a belief in an _afterlife_ though I doubt *Mick* believed in one.
I cried harder at the news of Dr. Aston's passing than I did at my own pa's funeral. The man was an absolute treasure.

"Since the filming of this program Phil has asked me to tell you that 'yes, he had'. I laughed almost as hard as John did during filming. He just couldn't keep it together.
I really enjoy when they bring children in to help. It's fun to watch how excited the kids get when they fihd something. And, Mick interacts with them so well. I don't know if he had any grandchildren, but if he did, he was probably a wonderful grandfather.

Mick actually died on June 24 2013. So he WAS archeology's Professor Dumbledore.
He's sorely missed by masses of archeologists, professional or amateur :(

The primary school is literally right next door.
Every year when we were growing up burford would hold a day where a giant dragon would go down the hill and straight into the priory, we would do May poll dancing and have cake stalls and everything.

I studied at Burford School just at the top of the Hill, and in the Summer we would go down to the river and feed the ducks, great place to grow up. We had our end of year party inside of the minster Ruins, I am quite lucky I suppose.

Just recently found out that Mick passed away suddenly in 2013 at the young age of 66. What a loss for his family, the TT family and archeology.
Indeed, I hope they will make a tribute episode for him.

The USA did a version that lasted only a couple seasons. I watched most of them but the Tony/Mick/Phil/John energy just wasn't there

So basically the Saxons made clay Pyrex ware. How Paul described their result is exactly what Pyrex ware is made to do, it's porous glass that expands and contracts. Which means that just like with china and pottery but unlike vitreous glass, you have to have separate sets for dairy and meat to keep kosher. The pores absorb fat.

Pretty much everyone talks about Mick. Now I love him but give praise to the people actually digging. Yeah they rotate people but it makes sense depending on what "period" they are digging. Also they have or are working twords doctorates which takes years. So again Mick love him but it's the people actually excavating that make this show as awesome as it is cause they allow people like Mick to explain what they find

I love the ones that have more Mick in them.. they have so much fun and you can see how well they all mesh. This show was lightning in a bottle.. I will always wish it never stopped filming but I’m so so glad they got to make as much as they have.❤

A bit of trivia: The Priory is owned by Rupert Murdoch's daughter, Elizabeth. Which is why "the owners", who are usually mentioned on Time Team, are not mentioned or on-screen in this episode.

The murdoch family took it over only a few years ago. Before them it housed nuns and monks.
It was lovely to greet them everyday walking up and down the hill. I remember when time team came into burford and the murdochs were not there then, they Baught it and in my opinion destroyed it. They have maybe been there 8-9 years.

I'll bet those kids enjoyed playing in the dirt and building model houses at lot more than sitting at their desks doing arithmetic problems!
Such a good lesson to have their village's history laid out like that with houses they made. They'll remember it all their lives.

It Should never be surprising to anyone to find settlement on top of settlement and structure on top of structure on top of structure. What is one of the first things you look for when choosing any place to live. its Location, location, location! this has been true of men throughout time. when you decide that you have found a good place to live you either build there , move into an existing structure, or knock it down and build on top of it.If you're an invader. you kill off the inhabitants and burn down their houses, and thereafter build you own on the very same site for the very same reason.

how does anyone figure anything out - from what was already going on around them 🤔 when was waddle and daub first used - if “this recipe” worked for walls maybe someone figured it might work for pottery - Tony maybe have been disgusted by domestic use of animal dung but our ancestors weren’t - they used what they had 🤔
After all, as was said, firing the pottery burned out all the organic matter (i.e. Dung), so nothing was left but the fired clay.
Considering that the daub that the walls of Anglo Saxon houses used over the wattle (wood,sticks, branches) was mud mixed with animal dung, I doubt any of the Anglo Saxons have the use of ding in cooking pots much thought.
Those kids must be about 18 now, right? Wonder if any of them have seen this and can remember being there
Unfortunately the latest three series are blocked by Channel 4 in Britain because they might want to repeat it, so they don't want people in Britain watching it on the net.
Somebody told me that series 18 and 19 should be released for the net in Britain at the end of this year, and series 20 should be available some time next year.
If you want it earlier, you could try to complain at C4 or you could find a friend abroad and ask them to download the episodes for you.

How did they discover that animal dung makes good pottery? They mixed it with mud for their wattle-and-daub roundhouses, and when one caught fire they probably observed the results.

I don't understand the antagonism Tony brings into this. It has clearly gotten on Mick's nerves. Maybe because it is TV they want him to stir things up . I think it is plenty stirring without any bickering or competitiveness. It's is just a part of life that finds are sometimes not where you hope them to be and sometimes more spread out than you would like. The hope is other scientists come back to do more thorough digs. But at least they are making significant discoveries and that is plenty interesting to me without the drama.
+Fox1nDen I have watched a ,,,laughing,, few hundred of these shows. (fascinated by archaeology) Much of the antagonism is indeed just for show. There is certainly some 'married couple' friction after 20 years of association. But there are also times, many times, when one sensitive as you are, will see the affection and respect freely given among each member of the team. Some conflict is always to be expected among scientists, that IS what the process demands.
There was some animus, Professor Aston always railed against dumbing down the program, exactly as you have said,,, and it was Tony Robinson's job to play the foil, even though he and most of the viewers had long since understood the process.
Each, and the program , at their best,,, the programs surrounding their digs at Turkdean Season 5 Episode 4 and Season 6, Episode 9. Here, Time team led, not followed. It was , and remains, their discovery.
Sailor376also yes they are affectionate at times. Yes the dumbing down quite unnecessary. It is more tone of voice than substance I find annoying but then I have lived alone in bliss for many years and do not have the toughness others may have that way. Still a good show. I even schedule reruns. It helps me interpret documents and lack thereof in ancestry quests.

Scripted or not. Tony is a pint sized obnoxious know it all big mouth who is an irritating antagonist. Thank goodness I haven't had to suffer through 20 years of Tony Robinson.
I've seen Tony at work while we've been filming together, and he is a consummate professional. Of course the bickering is part of it: they're making a TV programme, not an academic paper. But it is one of the few programmes I've seen that does not hide the bits that go wrong, or exaggerate for effect (well, not that much...)
44:40 to 46:40 horribly filmed and edited. why couldn't they just keep the camera on the model map so we could watch the changes take place, the buildings come and go, in a coherent manner?

You really can't excavate a site in 3 days! I know they probably continue after the 3 days are up, but I wish they would do update episodes. Just saying🌷
With experienced archæologists like these 3 days is quite usual for an evaluation dig. Other factors are the regular archæological jobs of the diggers and sheer cost. The sites are recorded and often the digs are later extended by other teams into full digs.
An odd show. Tony goading everyone, Phil grumpy, Paul Blenkhorn for once not rude and testy. Such an interesting site, though.
So, that's Tony doing his usual job he is paid to do, i.e. playing 'devil's advocate' in order to get some proper, thought-provoking answers from the archaeologists; Phil showing his usual huge enthusiasm without smiling a lot (so what?) and Paul just being Paul. Why is it odd? Geez.
Weird that both Scarlett and Faye seem dressed up for the camera with fashion (i.e. useless) scarves that would be constantly in their way as they dug!

There are similar organizations for *Wales, Scotland* and *Northern Ireland* but they all only have authority over already _scheduled_ sites, sites that are already known to have important archæology on them. th-cam.com/video/jZi0BpKzjl4/w-d-xo.html will give you idea of how it works but the rules (and the name) have eased quite a bit since then.
The thing is that without *EH* totally unqualified people, _not_ archæologists, would do a *Schliemann* wherever they fancied.

06/07/2022 The first of two new Time Teams have been released and Gater has gotten tubby. Baldrick's replacement is terribly low energy and has the most annoying breathiness to his presentation.

I'm sorry, but during the last 6 seasons or so half of the episodes have a few min of footage that I totally lose any information that is explained, Faye is so smokin hot every time she shows up on the screen, all I hear is blah, blah, blah....not complaining, just sayin'. :)

IN INDIA SOME POTTERS STILL USED COW DUNG IN MAKING TRADITIONAL COOKING POT AND THEY CAN BE USED ON DIRECT HEAT WITHOUT BREAKING, BUT YOU NEED TO CLEAN AND THEN SUN DRIED IT PROPERLY EVERY TIME YOU USED IT BECAUSE ITS ABSORBED ODOR AND TASTE OF THE COOKING.

Romans did certainly, Saxons possibly. As we saw in this program they certainly seemed to place a value on Roman things that was beyond their material worth.

Of all the 200+ Time team episodes, it's this one that to me at least, that should be dedicated to Mick.

I love the episodes when they involve school children, I remember an episode they met two boys suspended from school for a few days and they put them to work at the dig.

Amazing that 700-800 year old remains are only a foot or so underground.
More than half through there is Roman stuff. But when Mick took Tony up onto a rooftop, pointing to the area where the Roman stuff is coming from, there is no mention of a possible Roman garrison or fort.
That's because there is _no_ evidence for one.
