    Here's a tip - rather than tacking it all down, tack it once and leave it a bit loose. Then, when you're installing the second board you will have wiggle room to adjust it, rather than having to adjust your saw and make additional cuts. Once both boards fit, tack the first one fully and move on to the next board leaving the second one a bit loose, and so forth.

      Trims should be aligned with the frame. In a perfectly made frame you won't have to readjust the saw, because all angles would be 45 degrees. In reality, frames are not always perfect, so you have to adjust the angle if you want to get a precise fit

      @@val4803if you build the jamb and attach the casing before you even attach anything to the wall, you get best results, and can do more windows faster. Just make sure your jamb length is proper

    Watched this video just a handful of times and slowly but surely, I was able to put together a beautiful window in several hours. The initial cuts are relatively simple, and if you take your time and ensure that the final cut is perfect, you'll have yourself a glorious lil' window when you're done! I'm sure the next one won't take as long, I'm just meticulous.

    Setting your miter saw to a back cut of 1-2 degrees makes sure your 45 degree cuts are nice and tight. You do have to change the way you cut your angles though, always being aware of the way the blade is tilted. Once you've caught onto it, it makes your miters perfect.

    Awesome video. I had never really done this before and my miters came out perfect. My house is old and the framing surrounding the window iwas not perfectly square. That is why the 45 degree comment below may not be relevant for every scenario. Mine were definitley not all 45 degrees and if you forced them to that the reveals would look off.

  • @Lib3x
    @Lib3x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is the correct way. But I would nail the top and side pieces on the jamb. Then Nail the top corners to the wall so they stay nice and flush.
    The bottom piece is easy.
    You could just cut it to the same length as the top one, but in this case just make sure the jambs are pointing 90° put the trim upside down against the 45° corners of the side trim and mark the trim Yu need to cut. Go to the miter saw and cut the pieces 45° inwards and you are done.
    The piece should now fit snug and flush against the side pieces. And because the side trim is not nailed to the wall you do have a few degrees of play on either side to press it against the miters.
    If you end up with a tiny gap, just fill it with paint and wipe with paper. To hide it, fill the nailheads while you're at it. 😊

  • @csimet
    @csimet 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Good, simple process, but I'd only change one thing... pin the frame first (inside & corner 1" pins), then return to nail the outside (2-1/4" brads). That way, you don't have to keep switching gun nails... unless you have two guns to use.

  • @James-ke5sx
    @James-ke5sx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I used to nail the side verticle pieces in the middle only. The I slip the top or bottom horizontal piece under the sides and use a box knife to mark the angles. I then deepen the cut and score a second knife cut 45°. This makes a channel in the wood to place your saw blade. This gives perfect fit and exact spot to start your saw cut first shot. I used a knife for marking and do fitting, rarely use a tape. Retired now after 40+ years

      Home depot sells a ryobi 7 and 1/4 miter saw for 130 dll, this one will work fine for window casing as long as the piece is not to big, but there is tricks around that, this saw comes with a blade already but I highly recommend buying a diablo ultra finish blade

    • @borys444
      @borys444 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would buy a 12 inch single bevel miter saw if I were u. I made the mistake in buying a 10 and quickly outgrew it (within 6 months). If I could go back in time I would have spent the extra cash for a 12 in slider with double bevel. If all Ur looking for is to cut 2x4’s and 4x4’s a 10 in saw works fine but the moment u go to a 2x6 u will need a 12. As the gentlemen said earlier buy a diablo 40 tooth blade. There top notch, U could even cut window trims with a 24 tooth framing blade if the casing design is simple. The more complex the trim then u will need a higher tooth blade which will give u less tear out. Hope that helps

      You don't need one per se, but no board is 100% straight, so lining them up even can show any variations along the edge much more easily than leaving a small reveal. It also adds slightly more detail to the trim than just putting the trim flush.

    I like to cut the bottom and fit the sides in that order. Then cut the top a little long. I drop the top on and even it on both sides. Now I can easily determine if miter angles need to be adjusted on each side without the need to hold it in place while checking. (Doors too.)

    The video didn't mention what gauge brads to use. My 18ga. brad nailer only goes up to 1.25" but my 16ga. finish nailer goes 1"-2.5". So I could go with 1" 18ga. brads and 2.25" 16ga. finish or go with 16ga. finish for both. Or does gauge not even matter??

    • @borys444
      @borys444 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      16 is overkill for window casing, it may split the wood in some cases but not all the time. Worse part is u have bigger nail heads to cover up if all goes well. I would get an 18 gauge that handles between 5/8-2-1/4

      Our editors recommend a 60 to 80 tooth blade for a 12" miter saw. If you are shopping for a 10" blade, make sure it is intended for a miter saw. Blades not meant for cross cutting (such as table saw blades) may not give you as nice of a cut even at higher tooth counts.

  • @marko5255
    @marko5255 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I don't know where you learned anything. All miters should be 45 degrees. You put up you top piece of trim and had no idea if it was level. Level is level, plumb is plumb and square is square. Once you made your top piece you should have made and exact sized bottom piece same with the sides one you know their length. Then it is a matter of making a rectangle with square sides. I need to shut up but seriously you are giving bad advise.

      Square or rectangle they are close enough that any reveal is not as noticeable as an unmatched miter. Every time you change the angle you change the length of the cut.

      Husker GunGuy I'm assuming this video is for the diy who lives in an 1890s home where nothing is plumb level or square, and they simply just want to retrim their house or the replacement window they just installed. This seems like a nice tutorial for the diy in those particular situations. There's alot of homes that fit that description. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't believe he offered this as perfect free mason expert adivce.
      Maybe a better tutorial would be on proper use of equipment. Proper saws and saw blades for perfect cuts. Something I'm only just beginning to learn. Can't just use any Ole miter saw blade. I've fallen into that category of typical diy'er. I see all the mistakes I've made now.

    • @andrewells7441
      @andrewells7441 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yes you do need to shut the fuck up as with any install you have to compensate for field conditions, so if the wall or window is not strait level and plumb then the method he described is the best solution, you way is good for perfect conditions.

    • @ranckie
      @ranckie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      His method is right on. You could have a 10 year old house that has windows that are not perfect. That 10 year old home could have windows that were installed by a bad contractor (and there are plenty of those out there) with trim that was installed by someone whose motto is "close enough" and you decided to upgrade the trim. If you cut all your joints to a 45 degree angle, when you're done your window won't look right because you surely will have gaps all over the place that you'll end up filling with caulk and paint, and reveals that will most likely be all over the place; remember the creed of bad contractors, "Caulk and paint, make it what it a'int". Remember, no one will ever see an angle that has been tweaked because the fit will appear perfect, but everyone WILL see bad joints with gaps and caulk forever! Would you really want your windows trimmed by someone who thinks like Husker Gun Guy? The smart ones will do it exactly like he does in his video.
