Driving Through the Abandoned Town Grindavik During a Volcanic Eruption

- The town was evacuated during the beginning of the newly started eruption but 20-30 people have been living full time the last months and a few hundreds come there to work there every day so the town is just a shadow of it's former self now and it didnt take long to evacuate it. But this was an excellent chance to film it from the ground for a change, show you the houses, how people used to live here and how serious this turned out to be for this fantastic little community that iv'e always cared about since i used to come to work there during many fishing season.
I decided to blend in older footage to show you my good old Grindavik, always full with life and a few drone shots plus other images to demonstrate some of the changes. I could only see the Police and a couple of other cars around but drone filming was almost impossible that day due to wind and altitude restriction.
This is however just a little part of a bigger project like I do have lots of car footage shot in 360 degrees from November 9th, the day before the everything went downhill when the graben formed, skewed the town and ruined many houses. The population back then was 3800 so those valuable files i have from the last day of the town need lots of care when I process them
I do also have drone video where i fly along the fracture and i will made that into a separate video, but my compmlete collection has of course the purpose to create a visual timeline for this worst natural disaster in Iceland since our republic was founded in 1944.
The winter shots were shot with my first TH-cam camera, it's of terrible quality and the cam sits also too low on the hood, but I made that tour upon a request from one of my first subscriber and bits from that video will be valuable for my documentary work later on

Thank you for visiting the Just Icelandic Channel.
Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
Your music choice was lovely and fitting for the sadness of seeing a once thriving port completely empty. My heart breaks for them. Thank you for your wonderful coverage!
I totally agree!
I second that. Beautiful and haunting.
😢
The town is only sleeping, if the larva barriers and luck hold, it will come back to life once again when the volcano has done it thing. Even if it has a few, well earned battle scars.
The roads, services and barriers would not be maintained if was abandoned.
The footage reminded me of working through lock down.......
Thanks again for recording history, if the town is unlucky, it might be all that is left.
by far the most touching, empathic, moving and closest documentation of what's going on. Thank you.
When I moved to Iceland 7 years ago I spend my fist couple of weeks in Grindavik, so I will always cherish this town as my first home in my new home.
This video makes me sad and brings tears to my eyes.
We already lost great community and beautiful old fishing town, but that's just a reminder that we - humans and all of our technique and civilization is worth nothing when nature opposes us.
Nicht die Natur widersetzt sich, der Mensch erobert die Natur.
This should be required viewing for all those who see only the spectacular aspects of the eruptions. A hauntingly beautiful video and a tribute to the people of Grindavik. Thank you Gylfi, this must have been so sad for you.
It's been very hard to cover this event after Nov.10th but I somehow feel as I have to finish what I started, although I don't feel like that all the time.
@@JustIcelandic I remember how you drove through Grindavik in its last week of being alive, and took all these pictures, knowing that it would soon turn into a ghost town... I wonder how the Grindavikings feel, seeing pictures of their town for the first time after so many months. It must be hard.
@JustIcelandic Quite understandable - this is your country and people that are suffering. But by making these videos, you have become a trusted guide to 100,000 people. I guess many, like me, found your channel by accident: they became hooked on your country's beauty and the indomitable people who live there; they love your understated humour and now regard you as a friend. Stay safe.
My thoughts exactly when you see the hustle and bustle overlaid on a deserted village..
An amazing way to show now grindavic so empty and glimpses of its past life. How sad.
You have merged the 2 so beautifully and thoughtfully. Well done
Thank you so much!
Totally agree with @DawnDavies-In3nn
Music really reflects emotion 🙌🏼
This expresses it better than I could. Wonderful, moving video. Thanks, Gylfi.
Its sad for me - I look back a few years and remember the fuel station & convenience store where I bought lunch, the school with the sounds of children playing, the housing estate where I got lost, the industrial units which were full of life, people walking and driving around (not forgetting a few bikes); so what it must be for you who spent years of your life there.
For all that, thanks for sharing these memories with us.
Take care, stay safe.
It’s not until you see one of Glyfi’s videos like this one that can appreciate the amount of work and time taken to film the ‘stuff’ over a period of time and then the time taken to splice it all together to make a visual ‘story’ and also a historical record. 🙌 another amazing video and thank you very much. 💞
While the volcano eruptions are spectacular and awesome, there is another side to the story. Thank you for reminding me that there were people whose lives were turned upside down in November 2023. My thoughts and prayer are with the people who lived in this wonderful community.
Thank you for voicing my thoughts. My first reaction was "How heartbreaking for these folk. Their lives forever changed."
So true. I also think about the crews desperately building the barriers for each eruption, not knowing if it will be enough to contain the lava flow and prevent further destruction. They are heros too
That was very powerful Gilfi, you are a true artist. My heart breaks for the Grindavikings that have lost everything.
Great short film , as always - such a sad situation :(
Extraordinary film. So heartbreaking for the people who loved their home and their life there.
Thank you Gylfi. I have been following your reporting since the beginning of these events and your calm and clear words and pictures have helped me to comprehend the incomprehensible. But all the time I've struggled to get a sense of the town (so very very different to a uk town) but now I can see it. Now i have a sense of the community and life of this place. I can't imagine how it must be to lose all of that.
Thank you so much for bringing the human perspective and for your commitment. Please make sure to look after yourself too 🙏 sending love to you and all Grindavikings 🧡
Poignant, powerful video touches the hearts of any who watch it. Excellently done. Gylfi, it was worth the wait. Thank you for saying so much without words. D from AZ.
This video has brought home the severe nature of the damage to Grindivik in a very clear way. I'm actually amazed at how much of the damage has already been mitigated where possible. And I can certainly see how unsafe it would be to try to bring children back in, even if the eruptions stopped.
Such a sad and poignant video. It must break your heart to see such a vibrant town brought so low, but you have documented it so beautifully Gylfi. Xxx
A beautiful, haunting presentation. Heartbreakingly glorious. Thank you ❤
A very haunting and heart breaking video Gylfi...it was a lovely little town...it is obvious the people who lived there took good care of it...the music you put with it just fitted the sadness of the situation...
Many thanks Gylfi...from Scotland 😢🌠
I hit the Like button because I love your videos, not because I like the situation. Your music choice once again is spot on. Such a charming town and it’s so sad that it is has to be mostly abandoned. My heart goes out to the Icelandic people and in particular, those who called Grindavik home. 💔
How bitter sweet, So beautiful and brave.💔
Much appreciated!
So so sad....😢 Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching....
Oof this one hit me hard. I grew up on Heiðarhraun as a kid before we moved to the Netherlands and my grandparents lived on Leynisbraut. So many memories there.. The school, my dad's old work (fire station).. Was in Iceland and drove by Grindavík a few weeks ago and it's sad to see the state it's in now. My heart goes out to everyone who (still) calls this place home. Thanks for uploading this video
Love this video, the music and the mood! It's so nice to see Icelandic towns this way, sadly this one is telling a bitter story. Would love to see more videos like this with comments in videos here and there to explain what we are looking at. Thank you Gylfi!
Wow, you really spent a lot of time and effort showing clearly the differences before and after, I am seriously impressed...
Thank you so much 😀
It's such a sad situation for the people of Grindavik. Especially for the the people who were evacuated to the town in January 1973 when Eldfell volcano erupted on Heimaey. Now 50 years later, they have had to be evacuated from Grindavik due to the magma intrusion under the town. This is an excellent video Gylfi. Takk fyrir.
The film editing for this vlog is so on point - showing the bustling small town to desolate streets. Great job. Wish it was a different outcome for all the people of the once thriving community.
Amazing video compilation. The music was so fitting. This reminded me so much of the footage of the small towns outside of New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. Everything just abandoned. I can’t wait to see your documentary.
A very sobering video, especially the final shot at the wall of lava on the edge of town. One can only imagine the pain the townspeople have and still are going through. Thank you for documenting this Gylfi
Gylfi thank you so much for uploading this homage to Grindavik. I stayed in an Air BnB there to use as a base for hiking around Fagradalsfjall eruption areas. It was September 2022 and i was just returning from Westfjords on a super project with Uni of Iceland in Bíldudalur, so i'd disappointingly just missed the 2nd eruption. But still had a wonderful time and was perfectly hosted in little Grindavik with ideal access for places like Brimketill lava rock pool and its sunset views of Eldey 🌞
Haunting, with perfectly somber musical accompaniment, nicely done. Sad that the one gentleman passed away.
Wow! I’ve been to Grindavik many times and love the Bakari there. We’ve stayed in one of the hotels there, eaten at local restaurants and swam in the pool, not to mention bouncing on the inflatable “trampoline” shown in this video right by the pool. So sad. I feel so bad for the residents and business owners and can’t imagine how this has turned their lives upside down. But, we know that people in general and Icelanders in particular are resilient and adaptive and will figure it out and get on with their new lives. Thanks for doing this video.
Thanks Steve, The people from Grindavik in particular are very resilient and this is not over. Always welcome to Iceland :)
What a terrible shame, such a beautiful town. Let's hope something good can come from the town.
Appreciated, we remain hopeful!
So sad, seeing the place so wrecked and deserted. The music matched the mood perfectly. Thanks again, Gylfi.
Thanks for such an interesting view of what was and what is now a ghost town. The sadness people must feel is beyond comprehension. The careful way you have merged the two time scenes does help people outside of Iceland to see Nature's fury in one of its toughest moments. Gylfi thank you for making the world aware.
Whew...
I gotta admit, this one got me, Gylfi.
I'll admit I'm a bit teary-eyed and a heavy heart with this video.
I knew the area had changed drastically, but wow - your video really does a great job showing the first-person perspective of the damage!
It's crazy how a stranger can spend only a few days or weeks in an area, and then fly back thousands of miles... but still have such a deep emotional connection to that place. This is me with Grindavík... I still think back to that July summer day, sitting in the Netto parking lot eating my candy bar, Pringles chips, and drinking a Collab before setting out to see Litli Hrutúr, staying at the Air BnB just down the road from the police station.
And now, how that's changed so much!! I can only imagine the emotions of the local people whose entire life was there! 😔
Excellent job on this video, Gylfi!
It's not often I get emotional over a video... but this one definitely got me!
Very sad. I have visited Iceland twice, it’s such a stunning place, one day I hope to come visit again. Good luck to the people of Grindavik
Much appreciated!
I appreciate your awesome videos.
I feel for the people of this town. How wonderful it must have been there at one time.
A beautiful tour of the heartbreakingly empty Grindavik.
Thanks and welcome
So cleverly done Gylf 👌, heartbreaking though 😔
Thank you!
Gylfi, you take us to places that no other Islandic videographer has. As always, another brilliant production. It is so sobering seeing the town of Grindavic, now just a shadow of what was once charm, beauty, peacefulness. Along with its magnificence, nature can be so cruel to destroy such a special place.
It's heartbreaking bc it's a beautiful village and it was obvious folks were proud of their homes...I'm sorry to everyone from Grindavik...I wish I could fix it for you all.
Thank you for reminding us the loss of such a beautiful town ,with an incredible clean design ,that made its inhabitants a dream place to live in ,my heart goes out to the people of Grindavik ,great video as usual with a d eep message of empathy for the people of this amazing town !
Thank you for excellent before and after footage.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Gylfi This is actually quite a sad video. The livelyhood of all those people who lived there is gone and they have to rebuild their lives. The music is great and matches the sadness of the video. Thank you for capturing the more human side of the town of Grindavik.
A very moving reminder of the human cost of this ongoing eruption. I was literally in Grindavik a year ago this time while on a visit to Iceland. Heartbreaking and very strange to see this small vibrant community empty and abandoned. Hard to imagine how the residents feel. Couldn’t help but wonder if there are any plans to try to salvage any of the homes and resources in the town.
Two years ago I visited Grindavik as a tourist. Remembering it as a busy city with a lot of working people. Important for Iceland economie. Seeing this makes me sad, although I now what has happened seeing the video makes it reel. Thank you Gilfy
Sad to see the town so desolate. Wonder if it’ll be safe to reoccupy in our lifetimes? Seeing those cracks makes you wonder how much damage is hidden
Gylfi, you have shown, in the most sensitive way, the outcome of this town, that has been in all of our awareness. It’s getting close to a year, in the town and its people’s story. How many prayers that we have said, the anxiety that the town’s people have gone through. With it growing to be known about worldwide. We lived waiting to hear how they all were, fearing for the worst, especially when the vent opened right next to the town, taking the 3 houses. Iceland became part of my life through these events. I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t know a great deal about your land before hand. I’d wait, watching the increase of ground displacement by the lava, for the next event. It was through these months that I came to know about your channel and the exceptional footage that you take of your wonderful country. Thankyou for all you do, which allows someone like me, from Australia, to follow and see your beautiful land. My heart still goes out to all that lived and some still do, in Grindavik. It’s a wild and ever growing land, that takes a special kind of person to live there. My love to you all!
So touching and very sad. It is very jarring to see sections that look just fine and then to come upon obvious destruction and danger such as the eerie holes in the ground on the playing field and the restaurant(?) (the red building) almost surrounded by fissures as if one day it will just drop down out of site. And yet some hardy souls are taking their chances and have come back to live there. I hope that one day before too long the town can come back in some way, reconfigured, of course, but also reborn.
That was a well done video. The grey sky made it look even more lifeless. The music was fitting. I sure hope n pray those people can get home soon. 🤗🇦🇺🦘
Excellent video. Well done, shot so beautifully. I think this tells the story of the last year very well. It's a lovely town and I am sure will be some comfort and nostalgia to those who were so personally affected. Thank you for this documentary.
Thank you for sharing these pictures with the world in the most thoughtful way. You are a very decent human being, Gylfi.
Thank you, much appreciated!
Such a beautiful country with beautiful people. Heartbreaking to see Grindavik abandoned. Thank you for the most illustrative video.
Glad you enjoyed it
My heart breaks for the people who needed to evacuate. This is an amazing tribute to the town and a wonderful historical record. Much love from near Rochester, New York 🇺🇸 . ❤
Thank you for this! I've grown quite fond of Grindavik while watching the live cams of the eruptions. It's a place I've never been, with people I've never met, yet I feel connected. My heart hurts for their loss. I hope they can rebuild and the volcano goes back to sleep.
Much appreciated! we might have to wait for years until things settle perfectly, and they might not do so, but to remain hopeful and ready to fight back keeps up the spirit.
My heart goes out to the residents of Grindavik. Sad and touching video. Hoping that one day a video can be made showing the differences between now and a future occupied and vibrant Grindavik.
A powerful and very moving video. Exceptional work Gylfi.
Thank you very much
Sobering to watch, just glad everyone is safe. Who knows what the future holds for Grindavik.
It's very hard to say, many want to return but cant while this is still an ongoing event...
not everyone stayed safe - one person died during repair works.
Great video+music 👍🏻👍🏻 your doing a fab job and it always reminds me when I came to your wonderful country 5yrs ago❤️
Thanks! 😃
I had the pleasure of visiting your lovely town in early July 2023 and stayed overnight at the guesthouse with the red roof. Fond memories of the pizzeria as well swimming at the outdoors public pool and hot spa. I feel for all the residents whose lives have been uprooted and for the entire community who are now displaced. The science around vulcanology seems to provide conflicting opinions whether Grindavík will be able to be inhabited again. Sadly, only time will tell. From Croatia…thank you for sharing. Zoltán
What else can be said but .... WOW! Truly a modern ghost town. So hard for most people to comprehend how devastating it can be to an entire community when the very ground upon which you're built starts shifting, heaving, and widening unpredictably. Thanks so much for sharing this pain. Take care, and stay safe!
Such a shame that a lovely town like Grindavik should be lost to a force of nature.
Thank you, Gylfi, for another informative, albeit sad, video.
Much appreciated!
It is truly heartbreaking to see what I’m sure was a bustling, thriving community reduced to this ghost town. I hope all of the misplaced population have found somewhere that they can now call home and rebuild their lives.
Tragic. And how scary knowing you cannot trust the ground beneath your feet.
What a beautiful and sad images. I recognized some streets from our stay at Grindavik in the beginning of august 2022 🙁
Thank you for showing us how Grindavik has been affected. It's so eerie seeing the streets completely empty.
I hope the residents can go home soon, and those who have lost their homes can rebuild quickly.
It's more life in the new video I just uploaded :)
Thank you for showing the before and after pictures of the town.
So eerie to see the empty town. Your editing in life as it used to be was very powerful. 💔
Wow! You have recorded a bittersweet memory for the folks who want hold on to a little bit of home. Thank you for documenting Grindavik.
Thank you for this video to day. We love watching you with that you do to keep everyone up to date. We really like this type of video. Thank you again…
Thank you so much for showing us the devastation in the town. Very sad to see what people have lost.
Brings it home to you just how many lives have been disrupted and changed forever by the eruptions. Thanks Gylfi.
Thanks for watching....
Thank you for this tour through Grindavik
It must be so difficult for you to drive through what is now a ghost town. Thank you!
It was, it has taken lots of energy to cover this since this place is very dear to my, used to come here to work every year as a teen.
I understand how very sad this is for the residents, but if it were me, I'd never be able to live there again, it just seems so dangerous. Of course, Iceland does a good job of warning people, and making sure they are safe; I just don't think I would ever feel safe there again. I appreciate this video, just seeing the town as a postage stamp with lava flowing towards it, doesn't show the real cost an entire community has paid. Thank you. Best regards
It must feel strange for you - remembering when you drove the streets in the past. Fascinating video .
Wonderful insight into the town of Grindavik. I feel so sad for the former residents. I hope that they can find peace and that the old community can stay in touch. Thank you Gylfi. ❤
Thank you for watching!
thank you Gylfi! a wonderfully emotive piece,
Many thanks!
Gylfi, outstanding editing, informative on-screen notes and music choice. Thank you.
Much appreciated...
Very sad to see a beautiful town abandoned...a thriving port and town full of life lying vacant is heartbreaking
Thanks Glyfi, very evocative and sad. If this goes on for many years I can see it being used as a film set.
Can think of the great sadness of having to leave, not just a house, but a home, friends & neighbours, not knowing if ever they could go back.
Thank you for sharing this story of Grindavik before and after thank you 🙏 ❤❤
Excellent and powerful video. Music choice is spot on. Thank you for reminding us of the lives forever changed by this amazing event. You are an artist!
This is a powerful video. Neighborhoods that seem to have little damage but are not livable due to the faults and fissures that destroyed the infrastructure that supports them, and the excellent before and after photos of the large disruptions of the faults.
Thank you for sharing how the town is now. Helps us understand the damages there. My first memory was of the field with ground separation 8:45. So sorry for all of the people involved and their loss :( .
So emotional, the before and after just pull at my heart. All those lives were interrupted, changed, and devastated.
The story about Grindavik should be turned into a TV-show or movie, like the show Vik. There's so many stories to be told.
Wow, awesome video. Love that you were able to show a before and after. It's incredible. I feel so bad for all the people who had to leave there homes, it looked like it once was a very nice town. Who knows, maybe it will be again some day. The earth is ever evolving and changing it's landscapes. None of us are really immune from those earth changes and mother nature. There is a lesson in there somewhere to be mindful about where we build and how, how we treat the earth itself in all it's glory. Thank you for your hard work.
That is so very surreal. Thank you for sharing this.
So lovely, yet so sad.
Great choice of music to accompany the images.
Thank you for reminding us of the human cost of this eruption.
One life lost and the loss of Community and lifestyle (and occupation) for the people who lived there.
😢
I'm deeply touched by this video of Grindavik, Gylfi. Wow, no more words to say. ❤
Thanks a lot fo rthis video showing of Grindavik where followed since last year. Thinking with sympathy feeling about people who have to leave their home forever. But life must be going on as well.
Grindavik will be good memory for them.❣
We have droved along some other town VIK och Höfn (Good food here ) June 2024.
Rellay love ICELAND 💙❤🤍 Will be there again, surely
Take Care and Best Wished from STOCKHOLM SWEDEN 🌷🌷🌷🌺🌺🍀🍀🌲🌲
This is too much sadness for me and for the people who lived in that city . Thank you Gylfi
Thanks for watching....
So very sad and haunting to see this once lovely community gone. Thanks for sharing this.
It hurts to see this once thriving ghost town. I pray for all those who had to move out and move on from this disaster. As you drove around I had this picture in my mind of the glowing menace under the ground that has its own timeline for appearing. Truly the land of fire and ice. Thanks Gylfi once again for an excellent and moving story.
Thank you so much Gylfi for sharing this beautiful but heartbreaking tour of Grindavík with us all. And your choice of music is simply perfect. Let's hope that better times will come for the community of Grindavík... Take care.
The before- and after- comparisons are quite dramatic. The selection of music is appropriate for the melancholy being experienced.
Papa's Barinn at the 1:12 mark. The best fish and chips in the world, I have eaten there several times. I can't wait to eat there again and chat with the lady who runs the place. I think of these people all the time. Thanks for this Gylfi.
Fantastic video editing. The before and after work is superb. Thank You for taking the time to create a flowing video of your tour with the before and after.
I had trouble pressing the "like" button on this video. Not because it's bad, but because it just so depressing. Grindavik was a favorite place for me to stop in when visiting Iceland and the Blue Lagoon. Great little pub right near the center of town I used to like to frequent. So sad to see it empty.
