Driving and Drone Flying In The Huge & Mysterious Torfajokull Caldera in Iceland

- This is a unique journey into the largest caldera in Iceland that is more and less without any ice although the Torfajökull glacier covers a little part of the 200 km2 sleeping giant that started to rumble in 2023. The Torfajöull volcanic system includes a main volcano and a fissure swarm (direction NE-SW) and is about 40 km long and 30 km wide. The main volcano there is around 18×12 km and the caldera includes also the largest geothermal area in Iceland (150 km2)
This is a summer road only and not even marked as an F-Road and it can be accessed from F225 but the even more rough option is from F210.

It’s possible to drive a bit further to Hrafntinnusker but this was in the afternoon and it was more urgent to use the little sunlight I got every now and for drone flying since the 2023 tour didn't deliver what I hoped for as for light.
I intend to make a full information video about this volcano but it’s only possible with the interview format since this is a complicated system and it’s not for me to do it justice as for the geology. So the drive & drone around is just an extra feature to my full coverage this winter. but the English Wiki page is however quite good for beginners so I'm leaving a link to it:

Feel free to comment on the form i'm using for this video, especially the choice of music and how i’m adding drone footage to the tour to explain the landscape better. The “epic style ending” was actually not planned, i just felt like that after all this magnificent landscape, and i have still plenty more to show you.

This was 30 minutes of pure bliss. I must say your choice of music was perfect. I absolutely love Iceland it is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and one of the few places we can see the planet at work in real time. The land colors are amazing the contrasting greys and charcoals against the green moss. The vastness of the space and how small we really are compared to it. Man, picturing what it would have looked like when that thing blew its top off. Then the transitions to those blue skies and clouds of various whites and greys. Simply a smashing video.

@@melodyszadkowski5256 I am trying to convince my son, who is into video editing to do this. We live in a town where you can constantly smell the sulphur and we have a large lake that is the caldera of a slumbering volcano. Not too far from us (about an hours drive) is Whakaari/White Island that is an active volcano. No where near as magnificent as those that Gylfi shows us, but still fascinating. We also have Mount Ruapehu that is currently going through a cooling cycle of it's crater lake, so an eruption is completely unlikely. Taupo regularly gives swarms of small earthquakes, I saw a grouping this morning on Geonet of another swarm, but thank goodness, no sign of eruption there. Beautiful landscape and one very stomach twisting road. You must be flying your drone ahead of you, because in Idaho a similar road would have you bouncing around in your vehicle. I know I’ve been on my share of them.

Beautiful video! I hope that you were playing the video from your truck camera at double speed or something like that. It was going way too fast for my brain to handle watching the road. I was better after I decided to only look into the distance and leave the driving to you. Seeing that rough road whizzing past was making me dizzy on a large screen at 4K. That silicic lava flow was really impressive! I wish you would have spent a little more time on that. The thick lava flow with steep sides is very similar to silicic dacite domes in the Andes. I have not seen the dacite flows in the Andes from the ground, only from satellite images, but the flat top, thick flow, and steep sides are the same. I did not know that Iceland had those too.

If I'd had half of the age I have now - 30 years instead of 61 - I for sure would rent one of these cars able to travel over these roads. This is an amazing video. I was 10 years old when I fell in love for Iceland - 1973, when the volcano at Heimaey erupted. I decided that I MUST come to your beautiful country once in my life. Now I've already been there the last 3 years, always 3 weeks. And next year I'll be back. Renting a 4x in order to go to the Westfjords. And if everything is fine in the next years it won't be my last stay in this amazing country. Thanks Gylfi

One must have a sense of adventure to drive the unpaved roads of Iceland!! Does this area receive a great deal of rain or is the washout due to snowmelt? Are these trails on any map or do you just have to dare to go looking for them? My imagination is not large enough to understand how volcanic activity could create this immense jumble of terrain, it's magnificent.
