I'm Loremaster for a game I'm currently playing in, but I don't like taking notes. It was an elected position.
To make things better for myself, I said I would only fulfill the role if it was acceptable for me to take notes in character. The GM agreed.
So now my 3/4 orc barbarian who never bothered to to learn how to read (because he was too busy hunting, mining, or fighting for his life or tribe) is adventuring to find his family who were taken by slavers. He's carrying a journal to mark down clues and make rough maps, but he still can't read or write. So he draws pictures exclusively.
I'm using a leather bound journal I picked up at a ren faire, or GenCon, or something and hand drawing session notes. So it's all quick sketches and child-like drawings to get the important details down quickly because I, like Hnifur, am not worried about how any of the drawings look as long as they convey the proper message. Because of this involvement, I get an inspiration point (essentially; we're playing Pathfinder) every session I show up with the journal that expires at the end of every session.
The best part for me, is I'm building my drawing skills again because of how quickly I need to sketch.

We don't have an official loremaster cause we don't have elected positions in my groups, but based on how vigorously I take notes in our 2 yr campaign I might as well. It's close to 300 pages now and over 80k words.
Tbh, though, I might need to try out this method of notetaking. Sounds like so much fun and a great change of pace compared to usual notetaking style (which I love, but with multiple campaigns it can be hard getting creative on how to change your writing style to be unique to different characters).

I wish my players cared this much about their character sheets. One of them literally has to dig through stacks of loose papers every game session to eventually find their crumpled character sheet. Another can't seem to remember what is on their sheet and looks at it each game as though seeing it for the first time.

I wish I had the ability to care for my character sheets this way. I do better than most (thanks to my clipboard that is multi-classing a few points in container) and my papers usually turn out mostly okay except for the edges, but the edges always get messed up no matter what. I’ve used notebooks, binders, binders with plastic sheets- none of it can hold up to my heavy duty and accident prone self. Also I’m likely to misplace new stuff, so it’s all a mess...
RIP my character sheets. You deserve so much. And yet you get the bare minimum... At least it’s harder to get exiled, unlike the dice...

most people I play with dont even care to take notes only the older players seem too althought was playing in a game and a player was noting down evrything the DM was saying. The DM nastily asked him what he was doing when he told him he did not seem pleased. As a Dm I hate that in 4 player party only one person take notes, I always take notes it was the way I have been taught to play.

I made a character profile for my character back when I was playing Starfinder, he was essentially a cleric. I found it really handy to have a page of "Personality quirks." It was filled with things like "enjoys referencing the sun when speaking" or "Will not talk about the undead in a good light." There was also a whole section for "Wise Says" since he was played a bit like a buddhist monk, and im not that quick witted on my feet, so i sat down and wrote out a bunch of sayings he could use when the moment was right.

I love you character notebook. You are right, standard size binders take up too much room at our table. I have happily used comp books for my characters. Currently I am using a combination of phone app for my spells (and that of everyone else in case I have to play their character that day) as well a purple sparkly comp book for my Bard /Divine warlock. It has both campaign notes and bardic parodies that I've written over the course of the game. They've all been kind of stuck in where there was room an inspiration so I've had to start adding post-it flags to be able to find which are songs and which are campaign notes. I have been chronicling the adventures we've had in bardic parody. One of of our other party members is chronicling the events from her characters pov in a diary. Every week we look forward to "his" journal update. She has taken care to handwrite about 4pages/wk in a somewhat messy misspelled printed style. We all look forward to "Brick's " weekly entry because they're hilarious.

I fished my cards out of the "Arcane" deck, which has some warlock specific spells buried within too. I keep them in sleeves just like those, except I don't double stack them. That way, it keeps the big level number on the back visible for quick reference...it _does_ add more pages though, and I _ammm_ a wizard so I'll have a lot of spells building up....buuut that's just more fun organizing for me, so that ain't no problem!

For my DnD characters, I bought a pack of small note books that are thin and have different patterns and colors. It works out great that it doesn't take up too much room in my purse. And I'm really good at compressed page layout designs, so I was able to fit the whole character sheet onto one page, with the innovatory and spells (when called for) on other pages. The rest of the book is for campaign notes. The biggest issue I have with this method is expansion. Our current group likes to do Character Fun Facts (taken from Dungeons and Daddies) and I write them down. I'm now having to write them on a previous page. I guess I could start using the back of the book, as I highly doubt my campaign notes will reach the very end of this book....
This is a long way for me to say I'm jealous of your layouts and I think I'm going to redesign my system. The major bonus of saving space is not out weighing the desire for pretty things anymore.

I've started to keep both a journal and an appendix, where I generally keep things with proper nouns (NPCs, places, organizations, special objects, etc). It's easy to keep it organized, and alphabetized, on my iPad and it's much easier than searching through pages of messy notes when the DM references something from 6 months ago.
I also started organizing my journal like a Skyrim quest log. I make up unique names for each quest and I can organize them as main quests, character quests, side quests, etc.

Your character journal looks fun. Scrapbook style is a very versatile way of keeping a character organized.
I've been keeping character journals for years. Until recently, they've been words. Either dry bullet points, diary entries from my character's POV or as a novel-like story.
The journal of my current character, now 2 years old, is a sketch journal. As the book is flipped through, you can follow the character's adventures through a chronology of pictures, with each "chapter" ending with a flashback. The sketchbook is filled with drawings and paintings of highlights from each session. Between each session set, I include a drawing or two from his backstory.

love your binder. i use a discbound binder myself. i find it really easy to move pages around and with a discbound hole punch it is really easy to print out & punch anything i want to add to the binder. i generally take rough notes at the game then type them up afterwards. it has gotten to the point that i just email my notes out to all the players afterwards since i also keep track of the loot. it is super helpful that i need up with both an electronic and printed copy of my character journal. i tend to origanize my notes per game with rumors, followed by what we did & who we met, then loot and how it was divided. i can bold and highlight names of people & places so it is easier to find when i'm looking for something from 5 games ago. i found pdfs of city maps, bag slots, caravan storage, bag of holding storage, character equipment slots so those were easy to add to the journal & print out. maybe i'm a bit to origanized.

I have made a captains log for my swashbuckling rogue, who happens to be a captain of a ship. I print out and tea stain anything the DM gives us and chuck it in loose such as maps, riddles or pictures. I then wrote the session notes up after the game rather than during, so the log is read as each day has happened like a diary. Just a little bit of fun for me 😆

Once back in the day before the Dawn War: I usually played fighters, once I made a Magic User. Honestly the thing I enjoyed the most, was that I wrote all of my spells stats and rules down on small note paper, and then roll them into scrolls tied with little strings, and then I kept them in an old playing card box (which to me at the time seemed really high class.). I kept all that, my dice and several small pencils and a pencil sharpner in a small fake leather pouch my mother had for storing jewelry. I of course referred to this as my medicine bag which held all of my spells and spell components. I clipped it to my belt every day when I left the house for an entire summer. Then my character died. I made a fighter. And the thing I have always missed most about playing Magic Users is creating the schtick of keeping little spell scrolls. I just like playing fighters more, and it doesn't have the same effect to walk around town with a piece of paper that says "Vorpal Sword" on it.

Instead of using binders to make a book you can add pages to, you may also consider a "junk journal" which requires more assembly but you can also add any kind of random stuffs you want to it, in case anyone was wondering. The binder is adorable though ^^

I did something similar for my warlock. I have a blue sketch book I bought where I've been writing all my spells in a coded cipher. After spending so much time on my code, I can still read it even if no one else can, so it functions perfectly for my pack of the tome warlock as a book of spells my character is supposed to be the only one who can read. I used a UV pen to add secret notes from my patron that show up under UV blacklight...for extra fun and flavor.

Just revisited this video to take notes on the basic journal structure, so I can adapt it to the systems I use (GURPS and Synthetic Dream Machine). I connected immediately with this idea, because I want to be the player who always knows what they want to do each turn, and can give the referee exactly what they need to know, right away. That's especially important to me, because I will almost always be the least-experienced player at whatever table I wind up at, especially if it's D&D, which I find utterly overwhelming. I also want to adapt the idea for my solo Ultraviolet Grasslands playthrough, because managing 4 characters turned out to be an incredible time sink, especially because I'd always lose ONLY the character sheet I wanted. Thank you so much! Looking forward to taking more notes on the "let's make" video!

For current character, Vailmelgro Uloth ( Half-Orc Vengence Paladin), I told my DM that she carries around a rusty dairy and I went full on with that concept and I'm using an old medieval-style really thick notebook as her character journal: everything tecnichal is write down normaly but inventory and session notes I write them down as she was just writing on her diary (adding props that I do myself because we play online)

For my Hexblade Tiefling I have a binder. The first few pages are plastic sleeves. These contain my own drawings of my character, her backstory and her character sheet. Behind that I have made a table with all her spells. It's a list with the names and a condensed description of each spell. Then I have a page dedicated to her ancestral weapon. Then I have basic paper on which I keep notes. In the very back I keep my ordered notes, such as npc names order per city. Or a list of npc's we can contact with the sending stone.

My main DnD gang keep our default character sheets at our hosts place. Not super aesthetic but the pastel one in our group uses erasable colored ball-point pens and drew their character in full color with pro markers on the portrait section so that's cute!
Personally I keep all notes in a notebook that I customized to look a bit like leather but it being bright blue. I also draw up all the items we own and get. And also make mini portraits of each NPS next to it's name on the NPC section. The aesthetic of this notebook is VERY "school doodles" because I don't have the energy to do anything more, being the only serious note taker in the group XD

I like this a lot. I'm DM right now in my group, but after this campaign, I'll be player again. I like this set up because as good as the standard character sheet is, it doesn't have the best layout, and it has a lot of stuff no one really uses often on the front page. This will be a perfect set up to lay things out the way I like to see them/need them.
