Oh my god this video was everything i needed! I bought one recently and was super confused about how to choose the best film option for certain situations (i started using film recently with automatic cameras, so i'm still learning about this world haha), so your video saved me a lot! Super great video, congratulations!!
So incredibly happy you reviewed this! Received mine in the same sand colour last week and I love it so much. The half-frame is bringing a new joy to me that other plastic/toy reusable cameras cannot do so far. I'm already ordering another one in sage :)
Fun overview of the camera and the accompanying shots were very good. Even the slightly blurry/overexposed ones. Price sounds pretty reasonable, I think I will look into getting one. I will say that being able to buy this eliminates quite a lot of worry since it is new and is much more likely to actually work. Unlike buying some used camera with its undetermined functionality. Currently I am using an AGAT 18k for my 1/2 frame photos. That one is tiny, has a bit of exposure and focus control. But it always feels like it's grinding itself to pieces every time I use it. Just found your channel, have watched a couple of your videos so far and am now subscribed. You share good info and seem to have a great outlook on photography. Thanks!
This is why you want just slightly more mid level stuff that is actually servicable. Got my eyes on a FED-3 which can be had for the same amount of dough as that Ektar thing.
true, I'm very aware of that most people struggle to get thru 36 exposures. This is why I encourage this camera to be used in groups! (unless you're a trigger happy photo nerd)
@@whoschrischu it can took a long time to expose a hole Film. On Holidays it is no problem to do it. But on normal days it will be a hard to shoot 72 Picture. Kodak should release shorter films with 12 conventional pictures or 24 half frame ones. In the 80th and 90th 12 picture films were available.
I think you use this camera differently tho by shooting a scene twice for more “context”. For example, you could take a picture of someone’s outfit on the first frame, then focus on their shoes on the second shot. Or maybe you coud take a picture of a building from 2 different angles. Basically what they did in the video cause it makes sense to use it that way
@@thorstenjaspert9394 understandable. Personally, i would use it like in the video. Its a much more fun camera that you just shoot without thinking much
What an entertaining video! As a TH-camr and an indy filmmaker, I really appreciate the quality of the editing, music and content and, as a film fan, thank you for a great review of the camera!
Such a great video! I love seeing all your different points of view, ya'll each have such a great eye. I just got one of these cameras and I can't wait to be us it as my travel camera and play with trying to create diptychs!
Great video! BTW Ektar refers to a term coined by Kodak Eastman in the 30s, referring to a level of quality. There are older premium lens that were called Ektar lenses.
I have the urge to buy this cam because it looks like produces amazing shots plus its appearance outside is cute & have retro vibes. This video is poking me to buy it already
Surprisingly good quality. For a Plastic lens it's great, maybe because on a half frame it crops the crappy edges and only the sharper center gets used
Great shots!! Love the vibes in this video and your friends are hilarious. I'm currently getting my Kodak Ektar shots developed and can't wait to see how they come out. I used ISO 200 film tho that I got from Amazon. I kept using the flash because that's what I kept hearing it from people.
It seems like if its slightly too bright or too dim, the camera struggles- there seems to be a very small 'sweet spot' where you can get an image that's not overexposed or an image that's not blurry. that said the images that did come out looked awesome
Pictures will not become blurry in the dark because it is a single fixed shutter speed. At 1/100s it's very easy to not get movement blur in the pictures. With regards to the sweet spot - you have to choose your film appropriately. But also, modern film has a very big exposure latitude. If you shove 400 iso film in it, even if you overexpose 3 stops, the film will handle it. It will just require a scanner that's able to deal with the very dense negative - but the film can do it. Put in Delta or Tmax 3200 if you wanna use it on cloudy winter days. Put in some 100 iso whatever in it, on bright sunny summer days.
I see these things all over the place here! Tokyo is a great market for these and I can't wait to see more people abroad enjoying them. I'm hesitant to pick one up because of the 1/100 sec shutter speed. ISO? Regardless, I opted for the Olympus PEN EL from 1961 (practically mint) for $50. 1/200 and 1/40 WITH adjustable ISO. It's much sturdier, and even though people indicate they are fragile, the thing seems to be built like a tank. 1/2-frame awesomeness. Pick one up. There are many models with varying aperture settings. You won't be sorry. Great vid.
I was gonna pick one of these up for my trip to japan - is there a better alternative that's maybe more unique to japan (would like to stick to eos lenses if not fixed, since that's what I own for my normal digital cam - also, any stores you'd recommend? Thanks!
Love this! Just got mine last monday and have been so excited~ been using Sora 200 for it, and I don't know how it'll look like, but I am alright - it'll be art HAHAHA
Now that looked like fun -- as you said, no training required on the camera, a location with lots of content/subjects -- but I like the time constraint! Gonna have to borrow that idea -- with maybe this new camera or some of my old P&S cameras.... Cheers!
Your Draymond shoutout in the caption is the best. I also like that you're counting down your shot for an inanimate object. As for the actual camera, looks like a fun camera similar to my instax cameras in terms of ease of use, and fun factor. I'd say it's biggest strength and maybe weakness is that it gets 72 exposures per roll. I imagine you'd feel compelled to burn through the whole roll to make sure you're shooting in similar lighting conditions to accommodate the film selection. I like your film recommendations but I imagine it could be kind of annoying to have to navigate around the film selection.
I'm glad someone got that Draymond reference :D I agree with your assessment. I think a lot of people still struggle getting through a regular 36exposure roll, so this encourages the "shareability" even more for this camera. I would be exhausted with a roll by myself
I recently went to my local film shop, & they recommended portra 400 & fuji x-tra 400 but I’m unsure those are best fit for this camera. What do you think?
If i want to use this camera for both sunlight AND night photos would it be better to use ISO 100 or ISO 400 film? i just don’t want to get both for 2 separate times during the day
Hey I’m looking to purchase one of these cameras soon and I love the style of the photos. I’m just having a hard time finding the right rolls of film for the kind of pictures I’d like to come out. Could you maybe give me the name or link of the film rolls that you chose cause I love them. Thank you I loved this video. You’re doing exactly what I want to do and take pics of cars etc. definitely subbing.
Hey Chris Great video! I like it. What camera setting was used to shoot this video (6 People Try the Kodak Ektar H35)? Is it a cine profile or s-log with an ND filter?
Great video! Have you shot slide film in this? Seems like the perfect way to make a vintage “filmstrip” for projection. They were 35mm positive film half frame!
Is the view finder vertical to make up for the vertical half frames? I noticed that some subjects were naturally cropped out, so perhaps the view finder is horizontal even though the shots are vertical frames.
I noticed you used the Kodak 400 colour, have you tried the Portra 400 Colour? I'm a Canon guy, AE-1, AE-1 Program and 7D and I'll be purchasing the Ektar H35.
I just received mine, any tip on how to make sure you are on the same frame so I can tell the next two photos are a composition? Counter is a little bit confusing and not so accurate
Hey Chris, i just bought this camera because of you. I wanna ask you this. Is the flash didn’t work when there’s no film inside it? My film isn’t arrived yet, but i wanna try the flash. And how’s the counter work? Is it automatically start when i put the film in? Thank you! Luv from Indonesia⚡️
I know you mentioned if you take a photo in landscape orientation it actually makes a vertical photo so what happens when you take a photo in vertical orientation? Does it capture the same image?
I don’t have this camera specifically, but assuming it’s like every other half frame holding the camera in what would normally be “portrait” orientation allows you to take landscape oriented shots.
I love how their whole channel is them having fun filming and taking pictures with different cameras
This was such a fun time and the video and photos turned out dope. Thanks for including me, Chris!
It was an honor to have you on! Great job changing it up
Dayum. With the price of film, 72 exposures is a godsend. And those photos with sunlight are so fire.
Really love that you included the competition, looked so fun! A lot of reviewers don't go into this sort of real-life situation.

Hi i just got it and still confused. Since it's half frame, Do i need to advanced it per each shot just like normal film slr?
@@FarhanaAbol16 Yes! The half-frame camera advances only half a shot, so you can do just as the normal slr :)

Amazing that many of the branding in film and cameras have a lot of legacy even till today.
It kinda sucks that they put it on a basic point and shoot camera. An apt metaphor for the state of analog cameras.
