  • It was so great to be able to talk to Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Laruga Glazer all about backbending postures. This interview not only covers her own experiences but also her recommendations on technique as well as a fantastic demo and explanation of the backbending postures at the beginning of the Ashtanga Intermediate Series.

From The stand point view of "functional anatomy" what Laruga say is 100% correct!!!! for exemple the neck exstension. If you know how to co- actived neck flexor muscle with neck exstensor muscle which generate a Fisiological type of "Bandha" then your neck is save, and spacious, no compression in the vertebrae.Correct also her explaination about nose dristi and his effect on the neck. But also here if we know how to co-actived opposite group muscle around o joint complex or here the eyes, then the action would be ok. Also looking the navel in chaturanga is very important. Eveybody can make the test to try to hold chaturanga for at least 20 second and looking at the nevel, then the same action but not looking at the nevel.....a difference of lines of force will be happend. By looking forward your core wil be disconnected....this is the mean reason....
lines of forces. Also correct thee fact the the head is the last to move from chaturanga to up facing dog, by following exactly the same line of forces. I'm happy to see how more and more people try to feel what happend in a western body by doing a move original invented for traditional body of indian people.....and if needed change it.
    Hope my english is fine....
thank all fo you for sharing culturale point of views on the net.

Excellent! I’ve found all this to be true from my own practice. My teacher from teacher training couldn’t even explain things this well!

One thing I don’t agree with is having to stop on your head for urdhva danurasana. I Stop in bridge then lift right up.
