i had no idea there was a brand new album, haven't kept up with them the past several years as they really took a dive in the mid-00s. Deserter's Songs and All is Dream are fantastic.
Interesting. I find The Secret Migration and Snowflake Midnight to be incredible. I guess the band hits people in different ways! Unfortunately, I am not as moved by their latest album. This track is great, but the rest is... well, a bit so-so for me.

This is embarrassingly, excruciatingly bad. Mercury Rev are now officially HAS-BEENS.
This is what happens when you let computers write your songs. I literally don't get the melodic/chord structure AT ALL. It makes zero sense to my ears. It's like they've spliced elements of different songs together with no regard as to whether they actually fit - just bunged them together and chopped them up so they're roughly in the same BPM and vaguely in the same key. It's a horrible listen. Grating and forced, nothing natural about it. The drums are quantized to within an inch of their life (if they were even real in the first place - they sound total programmed to me, and not particularly tastefully at that). Horrible production and really fucking weak songwriting. What happened, guys?? Deserter's Songs seems a lifetime ago and another world away from this plop.
