@BluStreak Good question. I believe Spock went willingly, though I’m not sure that was ever explicitly stated. With his mother being human and his father being an ambassador, he has ties to both Earth and Vulcan, though as I recall he was raised on Vulcan. Starfleet is probably an easier place to figure out your own identity, if you’re a child of multiple cultures, and is much more likely to value and celebrate the unique perspective of someone like Spock, or, indeed, T’Lyn
@@BluStreakIn both Prime and Kelvin timelines, Spock was offered a position at the Vulcan Science Academy, "in spite of his... disability" (being half-human). Upon receiving that condescension, Spock told the admission committee where to shove it (in not so many words) and joined Starfleet. This was especially devastating for his father, Sarek-the two wouldn't speak for years after-because his adopted human sister had been refused admission (which she desperately wanted) on the grounds that the VSA wouldn't admit _two_ of Sarek's "experiments."
My first thought was that Tuvok was an obvious counterexample. Then I remembered that he joined Starfleet about 80 years before his time on Voyager, giving him ample time to "mellow out", as it were.
A Vulcan saying that something feels "off" is the equivalent of a sleeve tattoo, six piercings, and wearing a cannabis symbol T-shirt with shorts and crocs while working reception at the Vatican.
T'Lyn is exactly the kind of Vulcan that Spock would -be proud of- find satisfactory. As she understands that logic is merely the beginning of wisdom, not its end.
Spock would (platonically) love her, and Tuvok would find her "fascinating." I wish she'd gotten to meet T'Pol, and I really hope Gabrielle Ruiz got to meet Jolene Blalock.
T'Lynn is a terrible Vulcan, but perfect for Star Fleet, she is an early version of what the Vulcan/Romulan reconciliation would eventually look like, both highly logical, but also able to listen and enjoy their emotions without being overwhelmed. When she first arrived at Starfleet she saw it as a failure, a dismissal, but by the end of season 4 she had already realized that Starfleet was her future and she would grow more there than in a Vulcan ship.
Point of fact: T'Lyn is "Vulcan as a mother🦆er," and the Vulcan Science Academy could have greatly benefitted from her diversity in approach. She is cut from the exact same cloth as T'Pol and would have fit right in under the tutelage of Soval, Tuvok or Spock. Vulcans-especially the VSA/VHC-have been shown throughout the series' to be bigoted, close-minded and _very_ hostile towards neurodivergence and mental illness (see: Spock's dyslexia, Sarek's Bendii Syndrome), so it's possible that her captain reassigned her to Starfleet out of compassion-not wanting her to endure a hostile work environment and going someplace where she would be valued-but ultimately, I still resent that decision, because it should have been *hers* to make.
T'Lyn is probably my favourite example of what a Vulcan can be; she's still logical and monotone, but isn't antisocial and cold. She cares deeply, and she shows it, its just not the same way other people would
If you ever read the "Federation/Humans are basically Doc Brown" meme, the Vulcans that go to Starfleet are the ones that can tolerate human insanity and not freakout more than being high on Trellium-D.
I never, ever, EVER would have considered T'lyn as one of the funniest crew members than I realized early on she was the Leslie Nelson (playing the straight person) in the comedy.
And the rest of the cast’s antics seem even more exaggerated with her as a contrast. She’s low-key hilarious, and she makes everyone else funnier by being near them.
At no point does T’Lyn’s former captain state she is being punished when he transfers her. He is merely being logical when he states she would do better among humans.
Her statements to Mariner about not being Vulcan enough, mirror so many accounts from people who didn’t know they were neurodivergent until into adulthood.
I literally started crying during "Empathological Fallacies" because I realized she was perfectly representing my struggles in the workplace. For my whole adult life, I've been "meh" on the Federatation's claimed vision of utopia-especially as it's embodied in the quasi-military Starfleet-but between her acceptance here and Saru's mentoring of Tilly in _Discovery,_ I realized that, when written well, Starfleet truly, not just tolerates, but *embraces* neurodiversity.
Really thought she and Boimler would hook up this season, especially after the almost paniced look she had on her face, when he blew up and died. Really unusual emotional outburst for a Vulcan. Guess she really is a loose cannon.
@@caffeinedelusionsI thought Season 5 was it. Or is this one of those spin offs that are basically the next season after the "final" one? Either way, I'm here for it
To think this was the cosplay OC of one of the writers. Once she became a smash hit in her anthology episode by complete accident, it's hilarious how quickly she became part of the main cast, and just as beloved as the rest of them.

@@DrRittersteinYeah, she went from being constantly called on her outbursts to an environment in which her outbursts were considered so mild no one noticed them.
I think it's a case of Gabrielle Ruiz and PTBs like Mike McMahan understanding that T'Lyn around non-Starfleet Vulcans would be far more lively and like a cross of Mariner & Tendi - which we get from the scenes from "wej'Duj" - versus when she's around Starfleet personnel. You get the same snark and sass, but a different intensity.
I really like a low status Vulcan. Its the opposite of Vulcans in TNG and spock? Also isnt illogical Vulcans who rise to high status in Starfleet feels like a... culturally revolutionary concept for them? T'Lyn as a captain who interfaces with Vulcan society would be? Really interesting.

The idea that all the Vulcans that get sent to starfleet are the loose cannon wildcards who get “reassigned to Antarctica”. Is hilarious to me.

T'lyn is just where she needed to be. The Cerritos.
She wasn't there from the start but she slotted in so well. This show could have run for decades. I'm so mad.
My theory is that the captain of the Vulcan ship is T'Lyn's father. The way she gave him attitude, like Mariner does to her mother.
In certain scenes you can see T'Lyn form a slight smile. Showing she might be a crazy Vulcan but incredibly charming in Star Fleet.
