Cheer up everyone the days will start drawing in from the 22nd June in preparation for winter 🥶 at the rate of 3 minutes a day or similar. Given up on anything remotely resembling warm dry weather, since July ‘23 the weather’s been dire with some warmer interludes last August…..
@@metamorphosis9793 Summer 2007 was really bad, widespread flooding across most of the UK, still remember overnight 19th into 20th June my parents home getting flooded. Was pretty brutal. Yet on the other end of the spectrum, here's hoping we don't get the extreme heat of Summer 2022.
Personally, I don't think that the 4-season model applies to Britain. There is just one season - winter. What changes with some certainty over time is the temperature.
I don't complain: as an indolent Belgian, I am happy that we have our normal, rainy 20°C something summers back. Do you like better three weeks non-stop 30°C + temperatures? Well, I don't. And for you sun worshippers: there is still july, august and september.
We’ll only say it’s a record warm month if it is a record warm month. It is, of course, too early to tell but, at this stage it looks highly unlikely to beat June 2023, which was the warmest June on record. More likely, this month will end up close to or a little below average for June.
I know it's unlikely in the near future, but if we do get record months will you mention by how much,ie in fractions of a degree Celsius and why it is so? People like me who have seen quite a lot of weather because I'm in my mid fifties, struggle to understand how some months are record highs when we've known much warmer weather. For instance, I find it hard to believe last month was a warmer May than the one in 2003 or 1994 or 1989
@@metoffice Being warm in places nobody lives doesn't make it a warm month for the people of Britain. If Rockall is 10 degrees above average but London is 9 degrees below average don't tell us that it is above average temps when we all know it was cold. Eh, it's called climate change. Warmer global temperatures means more moisture in the air, more extreme and changeable weather patterns. Gone are the weather patterns of my youth - snow which lasted for 1 week or two most winters, summer days with sunshine, blue skies and occassional short, sharp showers - the weather is more unsettled now than I remember it being.
@@jimparlett4099 Climate change is that double-headed coin you can't lose, if it's warmer than average it's climate change colder than average you've guessed it climate change, if you will pardon the pun CHANGE the record.
@pillred5974 it's what global warming means. More extreme weather like it will be hotter than average in the summer and colder than average in the winter. Unfortunately, we will get less stable weather like we used to...
@@pillred5974 I'm over 70, so I've seen things change in my lifetime. I started going skiing in the Alps in the late 70s, and you could guarantee that you could book a week at either Christmas or Easter and find deep snow on all the runs in places like Val d'Isere or Cervinia. That's no longer the case, and many ski resorts in the Alps are closing down. I don't need to see the science reports to know it's true - I've seen things change with my own eyes in my lifetime.
Those days have sadly gone . We normally get our summer weather back end of August. And September. But this year is unusual because last year it only went down hill in July
I love your weather forecast presentations - especially the Deep Dives and Trends. Many thanks!!! I also love to watch the videos on "Learn about the weather" as I am very interessted in how the weather operates on a more global level. It would be great if you could talk about el nino and la nina in one of your next deep dives or explanatory videos. Perhaps once our weather is affected by theses phenomena you could focus a little bit on it and explain.
Can't remember us ever having so consecutive wet seasons. I can remember winter 2022-23 was fairly cold and on the dry side, but since then, every season seems to have been wetter than average. But what makes this all weird is the cool weather as well. June is always fairly warm.
Very many thanks Aidan. Not a great forecast at all, and even looking further ahead it doesn’t bode well for the end of June. Not to worry as there’s nothing we can do about it but …hope for better to come. Thanks Aidan all all at the Met. Take care everyone 😊
Hey metoffice, is this constant poor weather being caused by the El Nino, or is the warming Artic causing the jet stream to run more southerly and weaker?
So basically, all of June is a write off.. It has genrally been grey, wet, windy, cold, miserable almost everyday where we are.. My wife has developed a cold.. It feels no different to October/November.. Oh UK 👎🏼🌧️ Edit: Aiden.. your emphasis on ‘slightly’ did make me lol though.. Top man 👏🏼😄
Can you please explain what is happening with the overall climate at the moment as it is getting difficult to explain climate change to a number of people who just think of local conditions only?
Climate change has 2 significant impacts: firstly, the jet stream depends partly on the temperature difference between the polar and temperate regions. The poles are warming faster than the rest of the planet by quite a margin, so the jet streams (North and south) are weaker and therefore meander and oscillate more, leading to more changeable weather. Secondly, warmer air holds more moisture (7% more for each degree Celsius) so rain is more likely and heavier.
We might get a bit of summer but not until at least the last week in June. But there's still July and August to go after that, way too early to start writing 2024 off.
We've cut down all the forests and concreted england..that's caused flooding.then..there was some terrible summers in the 80s. I have this memory of 21st June 1980 and it was absolutely pouring in Hampshire.
changes in the North Atlantic current can affect the position of the jet stream, pushing it lower over the UK, guessing this will become our new normal at some point in the distant future!!
If two of the computer models at 16 percent each suggest low pressure on Friday 21st, what are the other computer models suggesting with the other 68 percent probably with me going on holiday.
Out of 52 model runs, 16% show something similar to the first scenario and another 16% show something similar to the second scenario. Most of the other model runs show slightly different variations on the same theme - unsettled. Hopefully it will start to settle down a bit more the following week, however.
It’s more of a question , can any of the meteorologists explain this yearly phenomenon of cool weather before the solstice , Just as as the day gets shorter it gets warmer . I think I understand how low pressures spike as the earths tilt changes around the orbit of the sun hence high winds in March and October . The other bit is a mystery
As the Gulf Stream gets weaker, so the UK gets colder, even in the summer. Would the Met Office tell us if this was the reason for this coldish weather?!
There’s no evidence to suggest this is happening. Temperatures this low have often occurred in June - more frequently in the past than in recent years but still possible when Arctic winds bring cold air to the UK
That is to say: there is evidence that the Gulf Stream (or, more precisely, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) has been weakening. But there’s no evidence that the UK is getting colder as a result. A week of northerly winds isn’t evidence that the UK is getting colder. All of the last few summers have been significantly warmer than normal and Spring 2024 was the warmest on record, following the 7th warmest winter.
So June is cold and showery to the end, from my calculations that gives us just six weeks to squeeze a summer in before mid August when nights are rapidly drawing in and the sun gets weaker
I dont want super hot weather just nice days and no cloud 18 to 20 is perfect in the north east anything else and we melt but this summer is an absolute joke
