    Brad! I have spent literal hours watching and rewatching your videos trying to figure out what type of drawing platform I wanted to go with. Bounced from tablet to laptop back to tablet and then struggled to decide on which tablet. I settled on the Galaxy S9 Ultra and absolutely love it. I'm brand new to the space and found your technical as well as personal experience breakdowns to be just what I needed to get a lay of the land. I purchased all of your non Ipad courses and can't wait to get started. Thank you so much for all your help!

    One thing to note. I have the Zenbook Duo, which has kind of a similar idea second screen above the keyboard. I bought it to edit photos on the road and, so far, the experience has been underwhelming. It uses the same "Creator Hub" software that it looks like this display is using to edit the control panel. I thought I could map all of the functions of Lightroom to it, have them on the second screen, and voila. But it's missing options for a lot of newer Lightroom features. And when I say newer, I'm still talking about things that were released 6+ months ago. For a device that is designed for and specifically targeted at creative professionals, including photographers, it's pretty unacceptable (to me) that they wouldn't keep the software up to date to support all of the features of all of the Adobe CS apps. It feels like an abandoned piece of software. I'd chalk it up to early adopter problems, but the Duo line has been out for a few years. This is kind of a recurring problem with Asus products. Great ideas, but quality control, long term support, etc, is always hit and miss.

      Problem is, it's ASUS we're talking about. If this first gen doesn't work, they're not gonna bother build a 2nd one.
      I talk by experience, In 2011 (if I recall well) they've already tried to make a tablet PC that was basically the first Graphic tablet PC ever, yeeaars before Wacom and its Companion and Studio pro. It was everything an illustrator/animator would love to use. But as everytime is the case, for a first gen product, their price point was too high, nobody bought it, and I was waiting for years that they'd come up with a cheaper better version that just never came !
      It was only in 2018, when HP came up with its fantastic HP Zbook X2 (also now a discontinued & never expanded upon tech), that I finally got the graphic tablet-PC-workstation of my dreams, in which I'm perfectly satisfied with, if only it was just a tad bit bigger.

      @@jjstarrprodthey've been taking semi good care of their proart lineup, but by now some displays are showing their age. It's a shame because they were really good ""affordable" monitors for creatives but they're getting out-paced by OLED's. Unless ASUS bother to update their Mini-LED local dimming displays, they're going to get left in the dust. They have a 2000 dollar 1200 nit peak brightness monitor with 1,100 or so local dimming zones. The problem is you now have OLED's coming out with very good color preformance, better contrast, and with 360hz on top of that. Oh and they're 900 bucks or less. The ProArt Display I'm comparing them to only had 60hz. I really wish that ASUS would come up with some competition but I very much doubt it sadly.

    It is my understanding is the Asus ProArt Pen Display cannot be used as an extended display as with Wacom or Huion. A 100% deal breaker for me. One of the very annoying parts of reviews for pen tablets for me is the reviewer not showing the back and forth screens with the main laptop and the pen tablet. I am having extended issues with my 13 Inch 2.5k Huion where it works great in duplicate view but can't run a photo program on the laptop along with a paint program on the Huion (true extend view).

    Can you do a review of the Asus ROG Flow Z13? It’s a 2in1 gaming laptop but if it can run high end games, it can probably run high end art programs. I’m hoping it can fill the niche that the Mobile Studio Pro tried to fill as a fully functioning mobile computer for drawing.

  • @3polygons

    ProArt in tablets is good news, more stuff to come, surely. In regular monitors I've seen reviews and some models have issues which you don't get on the best monitors: Eizo, or in high end Benqs, but still it's_usually_ affordable Adobe RGB coverage (cheapest proArt models are only sRGB). That digital control panel, and the physical wheel do rock. My biggest con with it is being only 100% sRGB not at least sth like 95% Adobe RGB. So, no wide range, some colors won't show up (and that can be painful also in some projects for print, even, despite the reduced range _usually_ required by print). That's fine in a 300 bucks 16" inches tablet (tho huion and xp have their latest 16" tablets with wider color space) but in a 900 bucks one, hmmmm...not even P3 (not that that's much better than sRGB, but would be richer color)....That said, the factory calibrated for Delta E

    My rule of thumb is to not purchase the 1st gen of most any product (electronics & vehicles mostly).
    I LOVE Asus's ProArt monitors, I have 2. Seeing them make a display tab is a great step in the right direction & like you said Brad, a good starting point.
    I'll be watching closely for their next gen (if they make another, I hope they do!).
    I noticed in your vid what looked like artifacts from your palm while drawing. Is the palm rejection poor on the screen?
    Also, maybe using Asus ProArt 32:9 display could be useful for the on-screen shortcut panel.

      This is 16 inches, not 14, tho (I like real state for drawing... still wouldn't be 22, though). But for the money, yep, 1k gives you a Samsung "portable computer" (versus only a pen display), I have the S7 FE and it's wildly amazing (great sound, btw). @sadev101 I think your right, I found that the 2020 22in huion is sold at 350 dollars, and that'd be the perfect companion for this device. With the two, I'd be right at the price of the huion 24 4k model but with far more flexibility and capability. Very excited for this upgrade now!

    • @3polygons
      @3polygons 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      IMO, don't... If you don't mind having not too wide color (this Asus is sRGB only, tho), but care a lot about control over the pen, then the Cinitq "non-pro" - the basic cintiq 22 model- is around 1k (directly at Wacom store, first hand), and it's the best (pro pen 2) pen experience. I mean, The Cintiq basic models are all limited to sRGB only. If you mind more about a wider color gamut (so, not missing certain intense greens, magentas, etc), and really satisfying working space, the 24" Huion would be the way to go. I want BOTH aspects, so my only way is an Eizo and an intuos Pro XL or my latest gen Wacom L (but it took me many years to become natural with pen-tablets).
      Overall I guess I'd go with the Huion 24 (but the most modern one! initial 24s weren't very good, and Huion tends to sell old models as well) between the options you are considering. I have a cheap Kamvas 22, IPS based, it's a LED, not a QLED like the newest Huion 24. I was scared first for OLED's burn-in effect, but apparently QLED (I initially thought the Q was a spelling error, years ago :D ) has a way to prevent burn-in, and is usually coupled with a 7 to 10 years warranty (maybe in 10 years u'll have to replace it while my XL pen tablet is still working since 2009, but monitors do last less). My cheap Kamvas 22 has *_clearly_* less accuracy for line drawing, inking, etc, tested that very deeply, than my super old Intuos 4 XL, but still is "functional". With all the iterations happened on this latest 24 since my arcane 22... I'd go for it. For portable and 1k bucks, the Galaxy S7,8,9 are very good products, even the cheaper FEs, but for 1k bucks, despite me disliking Apple brand with a passion, I'd go for the iPad Pro 12,9", if it's to have an on-the-go painting solution with solid art software available. That said my S7 FE has been nice and solid for that, with Krita. But the S7 FEs do need some kind of matte filter, I can't stand glossy screens, there are a few good ones on Amazon.
      Do not get too impressed with the pre-calibrated terms and all (besides, in tests, ProArt monitors in many serious tests (uniformity issues, etc, tho not noticeable by a lot of people) have not had as great results as an Eizo ColorEdge (imo, nothing does), for example. I'd even get me a Benq *professional* monitor instead of a ProArt, indeed. But they are better than mainstream monitors, or, _much_ older XP-Pen/Huion pen Displays than current ones, though. Anyway, anything hardware calibrated (with a colorimeter) can end up with a "accurate" and good enough color. The factory calibrated stuff and all the validations are nice, and surely fine for people having no idea about how to calibrate a monitor, or not willing to do it, but usually you get the best result by calibrating with a hardware colorimeter, like Calibrite's (I have an old i1 Display Pro). What it mostly means is that this device once calibrated it will surely be pretty accurate BUT *within* sRGB color space only. IMO that is pretty narrow for artwork, these days. Functional and you can still do some pro work so (low end commissions and etc won't _usually_ be an issue with sRGB only devices) , but IMO is not ideal. Probably many of the cheap brands producing wide color space pen displasy come with a pretty bad factory calibration, unlike the ProArts. But I prefer that and calibrate it myself to have a sane output, if the monitor reaches certain colors (ideally Adobe RGB 100%).

      @NightmareFactory830 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @3polygons I'm actually gonna shift what I just said, looking into it more I now see the 16in wacom pro with touch is only 1,300. Landing it firmly in my price range with better accuracy. I'll probably get this one and later get that new xp pen 22in when I can afford it

    • @3polygons
      @3polygons 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@NightmareFactory830 That's the best decision if you need professional work color range and accuracy, and best pen tech, yet keeping it portable. I just can't stand smaller than 22, but maybe an old, too, tired eyesight, etc (today watched a report of how new generations are getting worse and worse eyesight with so much screen use: ppl, beware). Also for comfy arm or wrist drawing gestures. I had my ergonomic issues with pen displays (back and neck pains) after long sessions.
      The Cintiq I referred to were not The One (not to confuse with One By Wacom, which are the cheapest pen tablets, made to compete with cheapo alternatives). But actual Cintiq of 16 and 22 non pro. Costing respectively right now 500$ and 1.300S USD (dunno if due to Cybermonday week).
      Wacom Cintiq 16: DTK1660
      Wacom Cintiq 22: DTK2260
      www.wacom.com/en-us/products/pen-displays/wacom-cintiq
      (to me they appear listed as DTK2260K0A and DTK1660K0A , but I believe the KOA part refers to geographical region, not sure about that. It's same models, tho).
      About the lack of buttons neither touch ring in these cheaper Cintiqs, they sell one thing that is like a remote which has it all, and not too bad for 100 bucks and just getting that functionality back and full compatibility.
      The touch ring and buttons lack so can be fixed, but the actual cons of the non pro are: SRGB only, and indeed, just 96% sRGB, and NO multi-touch in these cheaper cintiqs. As an illustrator I don't really need touch, but I also worked in 3D, video and games, and I know why you prefer it.
      For professional work, IMO, go Wacom if you can afford it. Nothing wrong in getting an alternative, I was always promoting the alternatives over Wacom, until faced personal tests with actual devices at home (full time freelancer, it's not a hobby :) ). It's not to say it's too bad to work with alternatives.
      Multi touch (10 fingers!), all the buttons and ring in place (not everybody would be able to get used to a remote in the cheap version), and mostly, 98% Adobe RGB, then 4k resolution (although, in 16 inches...I'm weird, but I'm prefer 1080p even at 22", I prefer to see some pixels than tiny menu fonts), Wacom Pro Pen 2, and IPS (I still have some slight fears with QLEDs), 1300$ for pro work, that's a no brainer. And there are many more "pro" details that you end up realizing as you use it.
      Now, the main issue there is you need to be sure you are going to be comfy on 16. I had an old UX 12" and it was horrible. Sold it after 8 months. 22 is definitely NOT portable, though. But even the 12 models are a bit clunky to carry around, yet, "possible", like the 16s. I wouldn't use a 16 even if paid to suffer (well... would depend on the payment, haha).
      One thing more gathered from a few reviews with deep tests... The basic Cintiqs (and of course the Pros) come with a quite accurate factory calibration. If you are not gonna make any sort of calibration on your own, that's another reason for Cintiq. The Huion and XP, in tests, are a definitely off from factory in color accuracy and some other aspects, but once calibrated with a colorimeter (but I recon Calibrite's colorimeters have gone expensive, late years) by you (if doing it properly) you end up with a quite good output. I tend to like to "nerd" if I get the most of a device so (and bang for the buck).
      About the pens, I keep reading in every Wacom page that both the Cintiq and the Cintiq Pro, every model, uses *Wacom Pro Pen 2* tech. So, in that it is the same, but grid, resolution, etc (the actual tablet), might be much better in the pro versions, so, better resulting experience. Again, I was not referring to Wacom One.
      About the Asus pen's prob (not really, just the glass is more slippery than what we're used to, to fake paper texture since a bunch of years), yep, if the S-Pen works better, the Lamy AL-star is even better, then than the S-Pen (third party Wacom EMR pen, inexpensive).
      (before anyone jumps in, I don't mean that there's anything wrong in getting one of the latest Huion (I have not only "Wacoms", but also 2 Huions and a Galaxy S, have had many brands) or XP-Pen tablets. It depends on requirements and preferences).

      Knowing Wacom? They would never a allow 3rd party design to be as competitive as their own products in the first place by keeping the best know how to themselves. Just like Microsoft containing their top-of-the-line MPP 3.0 stylus within their Surface product line and only licensing older MPP 2.0 / 1.5 tech to other laptop manufacturers.

I've been having the "I want to draw for fun" bug the past few days, so I think I'm in the market for a pen display now? I think? Not sure as getting something of a decent quality is pretty pricey, especially as I'd want the screen to be good enough to work as a second display even when I'm not using pen features. Asus has been putting out innovative technology for quite a while but I never expected them to actually produce a drawing tablet which is wild. I don't think a lot of people will get this product because of those first generation issues that you talked about such as the texture of the surface, missing software features and the pen. In the next generation if are able to implement their incredible laptop Pantone OLED screens into a drawing tablet with 120hz and improve their pen to atleast huion or xp pen standards then it would be a killer product.

      He says even just using the s-pen the issues (bit of wobbly line) are gone. The control of my S-Pen on the S7 FE is kind of great. And yet I've been recently surprised with current Wacom EMR based alternatives for the s-pen itself, some being a lot better than the default s-pen for S galaxy tab tablets. I guess one of those - specially the Lamy-AL star, it would be great if Brad would test this tablet with it- with this tablet would rock. Although even having myself the Wacom L Pro current model, haven't yet retired my intuos 4 XL, so I guess I am biased as I am using a pretty old Wacom pen tech, yet being 100% happy with it. My biggest issue with it is it's only supporting sRGB (and the 16 inches).

    Asus was a real powerhouse of tech for decades. It would seem that they are focusing on high end products, value added, where high techiness helps, ie Graphics, Integrated touch sensitive all in ones. These Asus drawing tablets might become the real sweet spot, for fewer bucks than Wacom, still get a good device. For the tooth, maybe just add a textured cover sheet.

There definitely appears to be a wobble, even when you switched pens.... and the touch appeared unresponsive at times, you were trying to rotate the canvas at one point and it didn't move at all, unless you were using a drawing app that just didn't support that ability and you forgot? Would be better if it was actual wobble, means it's mostly a driver issue. Even Cintiqs have had big issues with wobble and jitter back when their early Win10 drivers were just not properly ironed out, but around mid 2016 wham all gone on my 22HD. Improving the screen too smooth texture really can only be practically fixed with felt nib.

    disappointed it's 60hz at $900 :/ when will anyone besides wacom make a 120hz pen display? I'm pretty sensitive to refresh rate and everything i use has at least 120hz on it, 165hz on my pc monitor. i can tell you its significantly more enjoyable drawing with high refresh rate. especially that 165hz + a usb tablet. there's getting a tab s7 or higher and using superdisplay, but that's not perfect and adds lag, which defeats the point. i would gladly take a hit in resolution at stay at 1080p. 4k at 15.6 inches is really not a must-have. i KNOW asus can make a high refresh rate pen display. (they put a QHD, 165hz screen, in their ROG flow x16 2-in-1, but no wacom EMR so the pen sucks)

Even if you aren't using a peripheral what are you supposed to do with your left hand? Even using the dial you risk leaning on those cable and messing up the connectors over time. Why is it so hard for these companies to put the connectors along the top? Or even have two sets of connectors in case somebody out there wants portrait mode (weirdo).
