Jesus Christ, look at that detail. This is revolutionary, in terms of terrain crafting. A real game changer. This would work wonders on fantasy terrain. Wall murals derived from ancient stone carvings or medieval paintings. Walls of hieroglyphics. Arabic/Persian/Iberian geometric designs. Baroque or Art Nouveau images based on natural forms. There are so many styles to replicate, it's insane. Consider also that the EVA foam is flexible. Meaning you can etch a pattern and then adhere it over a curved surface. Wrap it around a column. With the proper planning and cuts, you might even be able to work it around a round surface like a dome.
jeez damn... this channel has become straight bananas... almost more science tech than just crafts. with this, the lawnmowerman sculpting and 3D printing I'd say there's nothing you can't make at this point.
Seeing one of these in a hobby applicable scale is really cool! The potential to "freeboot" some art from online sources into cheap and easy texture is very clever
Wow that is amazing stuff. Takes building terrain to a whole new level. Wish I had the space for one of those. one could make whole gaming mats with foam and one of these machines.
Switching to craft-foam was a really smart idea. Have you tried using a vector-graphic file type, like .svg, to avoid/reduce pixelation in the engraved images; or does Lizzie not allow for that?
Just throw on an entire foamcore "art board" engrave and you've got detail walls for any theme; create a "cut channel" around the panels of the walls to run your craft knife on afterward to ensure a straight cut with burnished finished edges
I wonder if you could use that fabric-backed vinyl you can buy by the yard, and make maps or mats?? It would beat the heck out of making your own from caulk and tarps. Or, for tiles, it might be possible to use floor tiles, or even ceramic tiles. I doubt the ceramic would work well, but unglazed might work.
Great work man - thanks for the content and inspiration! I just purchased the Shadow Vaults stl and I'm looking forward to using it in a couple of upcoming projects.
Nice one! They came out great. I'm sensing a sci-fi battlefield mat V2 project coming :P I was looking at making 'urban floor tiles' on MDF some years back through engraving services but it was prohibitively expensive. I'd genuinely not thought about trying EVA foam on my cheap laser (that also struggles with wood), a brilliant idea. SDS' for EVA products they mention low levels of 'irritating gasses' (hydrogen bromide) when burned so it's worth having some ventilation where you're lasering and keeping pets away (it looks like you do already, just a heads up for others)
This is the first time I've seen someone laser engrave foam. Usually, I just see MDF. Now I'm actually considering getting a laser engraver. Very good results.
@@KnarbMakes +1 for being seriously impressed with the foam etchings and the immediate wall panels or detailing for walls it produces. You could 'Hive for Dayz!
Love the results you got, but I would prefer to do what you have here with thin MDF or plasticard. Not sure if I want to dump a bunch of money into a 40W CO2 laser, or just get a 3D printer, or some other solution like an actual CNC.
More tech I would never have considered but you have shown me a New Thing™. At least this looks like even a Luddite like me could perhaps manage it. Awesome!
You could do some beautiful 3D (layered) heraldry with that EVA foam on the laser printer, I'd imagine. Some really good stuff for Imperial Knights, for example. I mean, there are a LOT of possible applications. Even things like architectural reliefs and panels become more feasible. Lattice work using construction paper for more delicate builds, maybe? Will it cut super-thin brass sheet? That would open up a whole new range of possibilities.
Laser engraving and 3D printing settings are all specific to you, your machine, your exact geocoordinates, number of hairs on your head, the alignment of the stars, how angry you are at it, etc
One thing I'd note is that the adhesive on those £1/$1 floor tiles is trash, I used mine to glue down some cork sheets and had to basically take them all up again and apply pva to stop them constantly peeling off.
here are two great ideas for this. custom 3d chapter badges for shoulder pads, custom banners for banner bearers. could do for eldar and chaos and just about any race that has either flags or an area you can stick a logo
How well does Lizzy do writing? I'm thinking sandstone wall hieroglyphics, podiums with titles on them or even a sheet with say, a hundred tomes, books, scrolls etc. that one can print off.
I have been doing tis for years with my Co2 laser. The diode lasers make it easier for people to get into lasers but they are no substitute for even a cheap Co2 laser. They are too narrow in their usage and it is easy to miss out on the cool stuff you can do with a good laser.
Very impressive results! Given how flexible EVA is, would it be realistic to do an entire battlemat, or would the "seam" between each sheet be difficult to hide? Ultimate 40k Battle Mat v2 ;)
Hell yes! I might do another version of the battlemat, the original had seams as well, you just need to hide them by making them look like they are part of the design.
It would be great to make murals such as Roman or Greek paintings. Things that would be very hard to do by hand unless you're amazing at painting freehand.
Love the results, but the exposed wires on the printer sketch me out. I feel like they're one snag and pull away from a bad time. That said, finding a way to create custom base rollers like the ones from gsw might be cool.
Man, this looks really awesome! I kan see you make some awesome cityboards for AoS and other fantasy builds with that. You could print a lot of cobblestone roads and just roll the out in any configuration if you just want a road on a battlemat. Or just print large sheets and make a whole city! I would love to have that machine, but I don’t think we have eva-foam in Sweden.
Have you tried using the laser on some thin XPS sheets? If it's having trouble cutting anything thicker than 1mm than it shouldn't melt XPS that badly.
I’ve thought for a while now that more TH-cam terrain builders should try “engraving” or “etching” acrylic or polycarbonate (PS some of this stuff is super dangerous to laser cut/carve if done improperly - like mustard gas type dangerous). Be careful but etched acrylic combined with some lights and maybe some washes you could make some interesting signs, command markers, portals, “holograms,” etc. You can do it with a dremel but the precision and repeatability of a laser cutter is awesome. It might be worth looking at some videos of people who made light up swords, homemade lightsabers, and such. You could really set a new standard with your graphic design and prototyping skills! Just be careful.
I think it's likely alright, if you keep in a well ventilated area. That said I haven't tried it or done much research on the materials interactions to lasers, so please do so if you are attempting it. There's lots of materials that burning with a laser releases toxic fumes. www.ulsinc.com/materials/styrofoam
Sooo I just bought this so I could make terrain. Convinced the wife I would make signs and decor for her to justify the purchase. But let’s be honest, THIS is what I got it for 😅
I don't have links to the template, but. The templates for the laser cutter are literally just images from google searches of scifi patterns that are image bashed together in photoshop.
Whoa, you are engraving from really far away with that thing! You will get much better results from having the material 2 to 4mm away from the laser shield. The laser loses power the father it has to travel.
This would be a fantastic way to add brickwork to a large wall, for example on a castle.
Absolutely!
If it is a simple, repetitive pattern, a textured rolling pin works wonders on foam! You will have your pattern in seconds.
@@nyteraven66 yes, but the laser cutter allows for a complex, non-repeating pattern that a rolling pin would not be able to do.

Yeah you can import svg or dxf and it will use that pattern instead of pixelating it
All of your videos are seriously impressive. Love the strides you're making in the hobby!
Engraving Eva via ‘Lizzie’ is something that I’d never would have thought of! Easy dungeon tiles :D

I think cutting vinyl causes hydrochloric acid, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Have you tried the pink insulation foam?
The urge to purchase this is so strong
is there a cheaper lazer now that can do the same? many thanks
This type of laser is probably one of the cheaper ones for the size. You can get cheaper but they start getting smaller in build size.
