Old School "JUICE" for Bass Fishing (Giving you the most unique breakdown of Lakes)

  • This video shows you that you can catch fish and do good in a tournament without all that fancy electronics, mapping cards, side imaging, live scope, and info. Sometimes you can just go out there and put your head down and fish what's in front of you and find everything you need to find the "OLD SCHOOL" way. This was the last tournament of the year fishing the Bassmaster Opens. Lay Lake proved to be the best and here is what I learned, over a 5 day period I try and give you guys the most unique breakdown of a lake that will hopefully teach you a better way to catch fish. These are my favorite and most requested videos so I hope you enjoy.

I thoroughly enjoy the information and vids you are producing and you seem to be getting very comfortable in front of the camera! I came to the same conclusion that you mentioned about avoiding the obvious and fishing the secondary spots where the fish have not been pressured. I like that and the C rig was terrific for finding and catching them. I never realized how many more fish can be caught and water covered fan casting a c rig. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, best of fortune to you in 2021. Best of health to you and your family!

To have information like this on late fall bass fishing is pure gold. Rough season for sure but the knowledge that all of us are getting form you is awesome. Would have never ever had this in a normal year. It’s great man.

I seldom fish above the Narrows. Check out all the sloughs from the Narrows, all the way down to Paint Creek, on the Coosa side. They lie in an EAST-WEST manner. The thicker mats of grass grow on the NORTH BANKS of these sloughs. It's DEEPER grass, too. Some is as much as 8' deep! This allows largemouths to kick their tail ONCE and shoot out of the grass and instantly be in 15' of water. THIS is where you'll find those late fall kicker largemouths. Start at the Narrows, dragging your C-rig on the points, and come 15lbs of spots or 9am, whichever comes 1st, go to those thicker North Bank mats for a coupla kicker heads. Also, ALL the island grass mats around the Flatlands (Lower State Ramp) and the mouth of Paint Creek hold good heads (4-7lbs) year 'round.

You were on the right trail! On the Coosa in the late fall/early winter, you GOTTA have a coupla magnum spots; especially if there's frost or a freeze. We always drag a Carolina rig 1st thing in the morning; GloStik or baby brush hog. The bigger spots usually bite early. You MUST know WHEN Lay Dam is running HOW MANY turbines! Once the sun gets up (9-ish), you BETTER have 13-15lbs of spots. You're right on the smaller swimbait; a pearl 3" Sassy Shad is best. I even use a Lake Fork Tackle Baby Boot Tail Shad and Bobby Garland's Slab Hunt'R Finesse Baitfish. (Hit me up for the right, CUSTOM made, weedless, ³/¹⁶oz heads!) Then, you hit those EAST-WEST situated sloughs off the main lake, concentrating on the thicker NORTH BANK grass mats, ONLY. Swimjigs are good while you're moving, but I flip a Hematoma Beaver on 1oz Tungsten in the thick winter mats, for a kicker head or two. You MUST have that MIXED BAG in winter. THAT is how we win on Lay in December.

Being from Birmingham I fish Lay pretty often, it is a day by day lake, like most, this time of the year. In the grass you have to look at it 2 ways, 1 where would be the best spot to ambush with current. 2 where is the best place without. That grass can hero you or zero you.

Did you put in a map card after the tournament just to see what the contours looked like on the spots you caught em? It would be interesting if those little places that aren't obvious looked more obvious with the contours, like a short ledge or a small flatter spot.
