      Yea the group are one of the biggest contributors to modern day diversity in the music industry... Sinatra took Sammy under his wing, Sammy didn't need teaching or guidance because he was fantastic in his own right but his skin colour restricted his genius, in fact Sinatra was the reason blacks were able to go to Las Vegas, perform and stay the night in the same hotel!

    The NAACP gag -- in the HBO film The Rat Pack, they blow the bit. Dean (Mantenga) says, "I'd like the thank the NAACP for this wonderful AWARD". The line is TROPHY -- Sammy was a tiny guy..hence the line, TROPHY -- a miniature statue! At 5:50, Sinatra knocks the ice shovel off the bar, as Dean falls down, during Sammy's impression of Lionel Barrymoore..to set up Dean's gag later..."Jingle Bells..." These guys were pros with superb timing.

    • @DerBingle1
      @DerBingle1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The "award" is a lot smoother then "trophy." Trophy is rough and it's not a very good fit. Who ever wrote that like should have heard that. These "Summit" shows were very tightly scripted, but these three guys were such pros that it was hard to tell. Only when Bishop and Lawford are on, does it become obvious.

    Luke, Just heard that Sinatra's longtime valet, George Jacobs, died on Dec. 28, at 86. Jacobs penned the book "Mr. S and Me" in 2003. Sinatra fired Jacobs after a gossip column reported him dancing with Mia Farrow at a nightclub. Jacobs went to work for George Hamilton -- George said Jacobs was more interested in being a celebrity than a valet. Hamilton's co-author on his last book "Don't Mind If I Do" was the same guy who co-wrote Jacobs' book.

    Sammya doing Will Jorden doing Ed Sullivan. Wonderful. This was tightly scripted and rehearsed. If you watch it a couple of times slowly, and watch the guys not featured for that moment, you can see the setups for the physical stuff. Most of the act is making fun of Sam and each of them looking like they're chastising each other for certain moves or saying things. Notice that Sammie doesn't drink the drinks he pours. but the other guy do.

    How sure are you that this is from a 1960 Sands Summit? I think it may be from February 5, 1963.

    It's sad that today the PC police say this was racist and Sammy was mistreated. It was 60 years ago and maybe not to todays standards but Sinatra got Sammy into the hotel and got him through the front door. Prior to that Sammy was allowed to perform there but had to enter and exit through the kitchen and had to sleep at a slum just outside of the city.

      John Billante This is only 8.5 minutes of the whole show. I’m sure the others must have appeared in it somewhere, either before or after this segment.

    Always loved Mantegna..now even more! Wow -- I thought he was the best thing in the film, but the hair dept. did a crappy job on "Dean"..Mantegna's hair looked like it had been treated with Jerri Curl--too curly and oily.

    It wouldn't play at all well now. Except for the lousy imitations, that were played out even back then, 99.99% of the jokes revolve around Sammy Davis Jr. being black. Sick even for 1960. Their cloths were all bespoke and made by Sy Devore.

    • @vinyltapelover
      @vinyltapelover 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      mitchell freifeld ".... Sick even for 1960." There a scant few of us who do not agree with your analysis...thank goodness. You are right about how it would play now, in these tender times. Laugh In, The Flip Wilson Show, The Smothers Brother, In Living Color, Julia, Soupy Sales and probably Rocky and Bullwinkle.
