When the second-generation Genesis G80 launched last year, it arrived with two turbo petrol powertrains including a bonkers 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6. However, neither engine felt perfectly suited to the car in our testing. That all changes for 2022, with the G80 receiving Hyundai’s broadly-utilised 2.2-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder. However, don’t let the cylinder count put you off, as this diesel unit pairs extremely well to the G80’s relaxed demeanour.
Our G80 2.2 diesel on test is fitted with the $13K Luxury Package bringing the as-tested price to $100K plus on-road costs.
The Genesis G80 competes with the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series, Audi A6 and A8, Lexus ES and LS and Mercedes-Benz E-Class and S-Class.

I had the original Hyundai Genesis Ultimate and loved it. No cost servicing and never an issue other than the fear of some of our untalented drivers damaging it when I was out and about. Other than the steering wheel and the wheel design on this new model (IMO), this is a lovely vehicle and a person would be selling it short if they didn't put it on their shopping list. As a person who drove V8 engined cars for years I just wonder how a 3 litre diesel would change the dynamics.

I love the blind spot cameras. My 4 year old Honda HR-V has it when you indicate\turn left (not right for some reasons..) but one thing that seems to get overlooked now on the newer cars featuring this is that you MUST start the indicator for the camera to turn on. On the HR-V, you can press the button on the end of the indicator stalk to take a quick peek left, BEFORE you then indicate. I like that as if you just blindly indicate without looking first, there might be a car in your blind spot that thinks you're about to blast over into their lane. It would be nice if the car makers putting this feature in, put a small L\R toggle button on the indicator stick, allowing you to flick the camera on and off manually, to check over your shoulders before putting the indicator on. In my HR-V, it certainly saves neck strain, and is very handy, especially on cars with limited vision out the rear windows.

As someone with severe life long spine issues/chronic pain and 6 feet 6 tall I find so many cars today overly firm which is why I have a WN Caprice.. Its an underrated car, with superb quality
. It's only diesel competitors currently are the Audi A8 , (no more MB S Class oiler for Australia ) & BMW have indicated locally that the 7 Series diesel may soon also be leaving our shores , though a final decision is yet to be confirmed.

I asked my partner how expensive he thought the genesis would be from the outside only (with him knowing nothing about cars and going completely off a first impression) and he said the car looks to be about $60,000 and it didn't look very nice. BUT, when I showed him the interior he changed his mind completely and said it looked more like a $100,000 car and was impressed.....I found that particularly interesting honestly. I agree that the outside isn't everyone's cup of tea but the interior is very very nice.

Non car people are not a good baseline. I love telling my wife how much expensive cars cost.
