@MindinViolet ehh 4 was decent. Story was kind of all over the place and I both liked/hated fighting the same bosses twice with different characters. Would very rather they did that with more unique bosses
Fun fact: The guy who voiced Griffon in DMC1 was an out of work opera singer who was embarrassed to take a voice acting role for a video game. He auditioned for the job because he needed the money, and only agreed to do it if he remained uncredited. I know that's not related to DMC2, but it's a fascinating piece of Devil May Cry history.
The good: Gunslinger moves, trickster moves, gun-switching, started bloody palace, level select, multiple playable characters, kind of had sin DT, cool character designs, multiple enemy types at once, maybe a couple of bosses plus an amulet-like system to modify DT could have been used to make Quicksilver and Doppelganger more useful in 3 instead of taking away other styles The bad: Everything else
Going to have to jump in and call you out here, if you just hold gun you will keep shooting till they die. All while they slowly rise into the air xD Yeah GREAT gunslinger gameplay.

It's thanks to him that the game is in a playable state at all. He's talked before in interviews about how he didn't want his legacy to be left as "the guy who worked on DMC2", so he directed DMC3 as a chance to set things straight and make something he can be proud of. @dudem8guy 3 has my favorite weapon lineup so it'll always be my favorite to play Dante in for that reason. But 5 has the best version of Vergil, who is my favorite character to play in any of the DMC games. So i'm honestly torn between saying 3 or 5 is my favorite.
Lucia and her devil trigger are two of the best designs of DMC, and the twist of her story, the angelic powers that are hinted at and threat of the lore getting deeper getting subverted in a way i still can't fully forgive despite adoring what it does for her character arc, is absolutely delicious and i'm glad they brought it back for DMC 4. i love her throwing knife feathers, i love the arm blades in Devil Trigger, her whole moveset is the right kind of stylish to stand out even in a cast this stacked with absolute Icons. i can only hope they bring her back and give her a better showing because she deserves a better fucking game
Same here, but sadly, I feel ike she falls into that category of: Characters introduced in shitty sequels the franchise wants to forget about completely, and thus the few good things about said sequel get completely ignored as well. Why try to fix the good things when you can just get rid of them instead?
I cannot believe someone is bothering. I'm not gonna defend this game but as someone who thoroughly beat almost every mode in a single night as a young lad, and then proceeded to hear people who never touched the game bash it to hell for the next 2 decades, I appreciate you coming along to actually play and analyse it, I'm sure it wasn't very engaging though so sorry about that 😂
The funny thing is the whole meme of "Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series" is this Dante. They used this Dante in Lucifer's Call/Nocturne where the meme spawned from, right down to his outfit and looks to his coin flipping antics and if you have the knowledge that both sides of his coin are heads, you can easily win the coin toss to recruit him at a discount price by betting on heads.
I think I remember Nocturne Dante being a little more playful actually. So maybe they caught on from the backlash of how his personality in 2 was received.
@@leithaziz2716 I think not having voice acting leaves it up to interpretation. For me I read Dante's lines in Rueben's voice but I can easily imagine people reading with DMC2 Dante's voice.
The funniest thing is that there was a second round of the me when Dante from the Ninja Theory DMC started turning up in games. It's always the lamest Dantes that get the crossovers.
Part of me hopes Lucia gets a return in a future game just to redeem her existence because damn they kinda did her dirty. Hopefully someday they can touch up her gameplay and put her in a new game even if it's as a bonus character.

This is one of the few games that landed in "video game limbo" for me. It's absolutely unenjoyable, but so incredibly insignificant that I can't even call it bad. It's just a massive waste of time.
It's the sort of game that fails in pretty much everything that there's not much interesting to really talk about. Let's just say it's not memorably bad the way something like Sonic 06 or Hunt Down The Freeman is.
That's probably how I'd best describe my feeling when i beat dmc2 for the first time, especially when i realized i needed to beat it through again with Lucia, instantly just took it out of my xbox 360, just it in the case and went to do something else
Dmc 2 was my introduction into the series. It was also one of my first game completions next to sonic. It got me into skillful games, so I enjoyed it for what it was. Like pac man adventures.

May this channel grow until it eclipses the sun and we all wonder whether Josh the Smooth-talking shall devour existence itself with his retro reviews. Not a bad way to end it all, if one were to get the chance to choose.
Fun fact: Josh Strife actually bought the WRONG Play magazine. There was a Play magazine for the UK and one for the US (and from what I can tell different people owned the two publications). It was the US version of the magazine that gave the perfect score (a 5/5 instead of the 100/100 though but metacritic always rounds up to 100) and the UK version actually gave it a 82 (still too high for me but definitely a different score). You can actually see that score in the bottom right corner of the magazine at the end of the video. Josh seems to have made a mistake but decided to stick with the bit anyway.

This game is genius. Dante is SO Powerful at this point in his career, that nothing poses a challenge to him. Capcom made a power fantasy, putting the player in Dante's Diesel Jeans.
Devil May Cry 2 has the same theme as DmC Devil May Cry LOL. Except DMC2 gave us prototypes of mechanics which will be used in DMC 3 and more importantly, The Rebellion sword, as Dante's signature weapon.
@@SuperSky9 It's really counter productive to hate on a game because some things are bad. You can simply leave the 1st helicopter fight. The game doesn't tell you, but you can. Hitting helicopter in melee deals more damage if you hit the part with the parasite eye. You can also do hard lock-on to cancel out soft lock-on and make hitting switches easier. Funny thing is that enemy AI is a little bit more awake on higher difficulties, which makes the game a little bit more fun to play.
Consider the fact the game doesn't have an Easy mode. So Normal is just Easy. Ppl mostly play on normal and don't consider playing anymore of the game because of the difficulty, but literally hard and DMD are fun.
@@SpringRaid How is Trismagia unfair in DMD? Is just a fight where you dodge one phase well, then attack the next. How is that bad? I already did multiple runs without any upgrades in DMD and Trismagia was never a problem. Most of the boss fights work so much better than any other DMC game, its just Heli, that spinning room, that Wasp and first phase of Argosax blob... And that's better than multiple boring and annoying stuff from DMC1, 3 and 5. Also, yea, Bolverk is a cool boss fight, but shit, that camera is wack in his first encounter.
I appreciate this series so much. It's the perfect mix of a quick overview of a game and a let's play. Like I want to know how the game went in a detailed way without watching a 10 hour video.
You didn't mention that if you beat the game on DMD mode, you unlock Trish from the first game, who now wields Devil Sword Sparta as her primary weapon. She shares the same moves as Alistor, and her guns no longer causes enemies to rise into the air from continuous fire.
8:16 A few little details about this. The guns in DMC2 are actually *not* more powerful than in DMC1 damage wise. They can stunlock some enemies, yeah, but DMC1's guns are actually more potent in terms of damage, you gain more Devil Trigger from them, and when you are good at mashing in a rhythm, you can fire faster than in DMC2, combined with techniques such as shotgun/grenade cancelling raising their DPS so much further than it should. When it comes to DMC2's combat, Melee attacks actually deal more damage on average than guns, especially with the elemental amulets when on Devil Trigger, and there *are* cool combos in there, but are weighted down by bad feedback and animations, yet guns are so safe to use (on normal mode at least), while giving actual feedback and having satisfying animations, that they *feel* like they are even more overpowered than they actually are (that said, they still are too potent for their own good, juggling most enemies from a distance is too stupid). If anything, this game is a fascinating study on how bad feedback and animations (the entire melee combat system) can discourage the player from using tools that, all things considered, are more potent than the tools that have decent feedback and animations and show results immediately (guns in this game). For context, DMC1 never suffered from this, it was really good at giving appropiate feedback depending of the potency of attacks, both melee and range.
Devil May Cry aside, the front of that Play magazine also has Time Crisis 3,Tenchu Wrath of Heaven and Soul Calibur 2. That's a trio of absolute top games that DMC had to compete against and they still gave it 100%!?
Well...no. Time Crisis 3 and SC2 both got previews that issue. Tenchu got a 93 and DMC2 actually got an 82 (still too high but not perfect grade too high). It seems Josh bought the wrong Play magazine (UK version vs US version which were owned by different people) for this video. You can clearly see the 82 in the bottom-right corner of the left page of the magazine at the end of this essay.
Devil May Cry 2 has done 9 things right: 1. Dante's outfit 2. Dante has probably the best jump/aerial movement in whole series 3. Ability to shoot at two different enemies at the same time which was in some way a start/basis for gunslinger style 4. Ability to dodge and wallrunning (which is not that useful but looks cool) with circle button 5. Ability to change weapons (only guns for some reason) 6. Aim lock (which if you want to stop aiming at enemy you have to hold L2 from what I remember which is VERY WIERD) 7. "King? Yeah, here's your crown" 8. Dante's DT looks the best in the whole series 9. Some music is really great (but other sucks so hard like f.e. JOKAGTULM or whatever the name was theme) In lots of ways DMC 2 has been a bit of a Demo for abilities used later in DMC 3.
DMC1 did have weapon switch, but only for the sword and gauntlets. I will also add that yes, for the UK having 60hz was a big plus. DMC1 was letterboxed and very sluggish. Also DMC2 altered the control layout to the default used for the rest of the series, DMC1's layout was awful. I will certainly join you in saying DMC2 Dante is peak design. Good lord he looks so f'king badass.

@@guyincognito8437 What kind of brainrot do you have to consider playing any DMC game to be a "massive time investment"? How exactly does it feels like an "arcade" version of any DMC? DMC is already, by definition, arcady, it even has a style system. This isn't gran turismo versus burnout, DMC already is burnout. This is just "hold square until enemy dies", it isn't any different from playing flappy bird.
@@devildante9 DMC1 was a time investment as it was difficult as fuck. I'm not saying it negatively, it's just a matter of fact. DMC2 I could play just whenever and it was easy and forgettable like an arcade game.
Dunno I played DMC1 as well yet I was blown away by this game. The showoff gunslinging action, sin devil trigger, I guess that was cool for me back then. But boy I can't deny the flaws that Josh points out... Shees this was a shit version of DMC
I recently finished DMC and decided to go straight to DMC2 because I really enjoyed the first game. The difference in gameplay, presentation, visuals, combat and story were night and day. I got to the 2 wolves battle, stopped and came to watch this video. I don't think I'll be completing it, I'll just go to DMC3 because I heard it was the best in the PS2 series.
If any of you were wondering why the guns are so ludicrously overpowered in this one, check out Matt Mcmuscles video: "Wha happun? Devil may cry 2" A short cliffnotes version: Focus groups complained about the guns feeling too weak in the first game. So they actually gave the game the opposite problem instead of telling those loonies they were playing a spectacle fighter.
I actually like how the guns work here. But they should have balanced everything else like have some enemies immune to bullets or having the sword work better for certain enemies. Who doesn’t love duel wielding though?
@@blainealexander5091 Oh I love how dante uses them too, but I agree. There is one enemy in DM3 that you have to make solid by shooting, then you melee them. More stuff like that would have been great. Basically just making all of Dante's arsenal useful.
The only part I actually remember liking about this, as somebody who played both characters, was the ending where Dante flips the coin to decide who goes into Hell and it turns out to be a double headed coin so he was always going. It was a bit cheesy but still a fairly Dante thing to do. The rest was utter crap and I don't know how I played it all.
I agree DMC 1 and 3 were unrivaled experiences, but the 2 way shooting, shotgun nun-chucking, and matrix style cartwheel shooting your shotgun upside down made me very happy so, it’s not all bad.
The first Devil May Cry, was almost a metroidvania, with an mission based style. Which combines a small world, but still expanding what we can explore, they did the same in 3, you revisit some scenes giving the feeling of a contained world and scenery. It was lovely, I missed it really in Devil May Cry 4 and 5.
Yea because DMC2 represents what DMC 4 and 5 are clearly are in YOUR head. When in reality they do not. DMC4 and DMC4 are not even closely like DMC2. So you can't compare them. No contest.
I know it's not a good game, but I always had a soft soft for it. It's the only DMC game that I actually liked walking around in. The archtecture and liminality gave it a tone completely opposite to the rest of the series. Plus, you get to fight a demon skyscraper. I can't hate it.
My guilty pleasure version of DMC2 is Chaos Legion. I know it isn't good, but by god, did I enjoy the summoner part of it. As for DMC2, yeah, it is bad, and my young teenager brain couldn't process why I managed to get to the hardest difficulty before the five day rental period was up.

The only part of the gameplay that I do really loved was the acrobatics. Running up walls then flipping of and shooting ll the enemies underneath you was awesome!
I recently got into the DMC series because it was on sale. I've gotten through the first game, and I played it mostly because I was told that you should go through them in order, though skipping DMC2. I enjoyed Devil May Cry a lot more than I expected, considering that I played it to get to the next one. My only real complaint about the first game was the camera angles, and the weird control issues that came with moving to the spot where the camera angle changed. I'm now on DMC 3, and a lot of the things I thought were weird about how DMC worked make a lot more sense now. For example, on the first game I would fight bosses by activating devil trigger and just trying to burn them down, but on the three I find it a lot easier to learn the bosses moves and counter them.
now I can't wait for him to cover DMC 3... like the first game was awesome. The second game was absolute shite but that 3rd game... it EASILY the best in the series .
Hi Josh, happy to see you upload again. I would very much like to see you do Koudelka. A unique game to this day, blending survival horror with turn based rpg.
I always heard stories that this game is so bad, but never truly understood why. I had no idea about the development hell it went through and its backstory. Thanks for enlightening me
god this game. I see a lot of people say that DMC1 should get a remake, but frankly, while it's still not quite up to the level of 3 or 5, DMC1 is still fun to play as is. I want Capcom to remake *this* game, as a way to fully remedy this game's mistakes, and so that this portion of Dante's life can finally be covered in a good game. Also so that Lucia can be in a good game, because genuinely she's the best part of the game for me, love her design (both in human and devil form), and I'm a massive sucker for "entity created as a mindless mook for the villain gains a personality and decides to be good", its one of my favorite tropes and I wanna see Lucia get the game she deserves
"Why climb the building just to jump off of it after the fight?" -No, that's completely normal for Dante - DMC3 is about climbing a tower, then jumping off of it.. And getting eaten by a whale in mid-fall

@@devildante9 I am a semi DmC hater, but the game has legitimately great level design. It's more akin to the Greek God of War games in that aspect. Horizon Zero Dawn... I sunk 20 awesome hours into it during my down time related to Destiny 2 a couple years ago. When a new season or expansion came out for D2, I left HZD and have thought about it ever since. When I eventually just jumped back into it from my last save, it was awful because all of the learned mechanics were forgotten and the story itself was all forgotten at this point too 😭 my motivation for finishing is to finally be able to play the second game, but I may just have to fully restart this game or watch lore up to the point that I am and just retrain myself on the gameplay mechanics. I wanted your solutions to work for me on this sooooo bad. Even though they didn't, the video was still really awesome! Great watch 😊
Even as someone who has never even seen footage of this game before, I was blown away with how otherly boring and generic the game looked. Nothing appealing about the set design and then a nonsensical story with many pointless events due to the lack of telling you anything. And the railroading that is really bad for the powerset, as if the powers were an afterthought. The invisible walls felt especially bad in this video. The crappy gameplay is just the big thing on top of all of that. I can see why fans don't like this game.

Amazing art style, exceptional story, difficult and clever dungeons... It's a really beautiful Zelda-like on PS1, horrifically underrated.
Funnily enough, this game has a lot of the series’ identity. Twosome time, Rainstorm, Rebellion, alternate costumes, multiple character playthroughs, Bloody Palace. As much as I disliked the gameplay thoroughly, and I’m sure the level designers didn’t really do this intentionally, there’s charm to this game for me. I liked how dreary the atmosphere is, as if Arius’s demonic corporatism literally drained the life out of this big bustling financial sector of the city. And this Dante’s outfit is my favorite. It’s also a testament to how the series recognizes every game’s existence, regardless of its quality, and I think there’s integrity and dignity in that.
Excellent video. As someone that couldn't make it past the first few hours, I've always wanted a deep dive into what made Devil May Cry 2 really bad from beginning to end, but could still present the information in an interesting and entertaining form. This was absolutely perfect.
Thank you for the video Josh. I got all the Devil May Cry games on Steam, I remember playing 3 as a kid on the PS2 and recently I got curious about them.

The funny thing is the whole meme of "Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series" is this Dante. They used this Dante in Lucifer's Call/Nocturne where the meme spawned from, right down to his outfit and looks to his coin flipping antics and if you have the knowledge that both sides of his coin are heads, you can easily win the coin toss to recruit him at a discount price by betting on heads.
I think I remember Nocturne Dante being a little more playful actually. So maybe they caught on from the backlash of how his personality in 2 was received.
Remember the Diesel ads using this Dante?
I mean, it is Dante's best design afterall.
@@leithaziz2716 I think not having voice acting leaves it up to interpretation. For me I read Dante's lines in Rueben's voice but I can easily imagine people reading with DMC2 Dante's voice.

Josh seems to have made a mistake but decided to stick with the bit anyway.

but the fact we got DMC3 is a miracle
This game is genius. Dante is SO Powerful at this point in his career, that nothing poses a challenge to him. Capcom made a power fantasy, putting the player in Dante's Diesel Jeans.
Devil May Cry 2 has the same theme as DmC Devil May Cry LOL.
Except DMC2 gave us prototypes of mechanics which will be used in DMC 3 and more importantly, The Rebellion sword, as Dante's signature weapon.
DMC Devil may cry actually has some stuff that carried over to DMC 5, take an example: narrator saying your rank out loud
@@keyman245 That's pointless as it was in DmC.
@@SuperSky9 It's really counter productive to hate on a game because some things are bad. The story is yucky but the free flow combat is real fluid, the enemies are interesting the weapons are nice, the two different grabs are awesome to set up combos
Oh and the combos and animations are really good, pair with the narrator talking about your style meter
The only bad things about this game is the overall story (but there's still gold burried deep within) and how Dante does not have cloak physics, it's simulated on his animations so sometimes his jacket teleports around if you pay attention
@@SuperSky9 DMC Devil may cry is still a better game than 2. Even the rough lore can be considered better (Dante may be edgy, but he isn't completely boring and brooding just awkward and goofy)
@@keyman245 there's no way people claim DmC DMC is superbad while being self-aware, while it does same weird stuff all other games do. Combat was better than in 4, story is AS CORNY as in other games as well. Dante is equally gay as he always is.
@@TGHunter Hard is definitely more fun, but the game overall is still quite awful. And some bosses on DMD are unfair/badly designed (Trismagia).
@@SpringRaid How is Trismagia unfair in DMD? Is just a fight where you dodge one phase well, then attack the next.

You didn't mention that if you beat the game on DMD mode, you unlock Trish from the first game, who now wields Devil Sword Sparta as her primary weapon. She shares the same moves as Alistor, and her guns no longer causes enemies to rise into the air from continuous fire.
Its actually hard mode where you unlock Trish. DMD mode unlocks Dante's costume from the first game and the Secretary costume for Lucia.
Secretary costume? 👀
Also, Trish's guns don't have the rate of fire limit that Dante's do, allowing the player to properly button mash like god intended.
To be fair, no one sane person would play through DMC2 a second time..
@@JayceCH.😂😂😂

Devil May Cry 2 has done 9 things right:
1. Dante's outfit
2. Dante has probably the best jump/aerial movement in whole series
3. Ability to shoot at two different enemies at the same time which was in some way a start/basis for gunslinger style
4. Ability to dodge and wallrunning (which is not that useful but looks cool) with circle button
5. Ability to change weapons (only guns for some reason)
6. Aim lock (which if you want to stop aiming at enemy you have to hold L2 from what I remember which is VERY WIERD)
7. "King? Yeah, here's your crown"
8. Dante's DT looks the best in the whole series
9. Some music is really great (but other sucks so hard like f.e. JOKAGTULM or whatever the name was theme)
In lots of ways DMC 2 has been a bit of a Demo for abilities used later in DMC 3.

@@blainealexander5091 Oh I love how dante uses them too, but I agree. There is one enemy in DM3 that you have to make solid by shooting, then you melee them. More stuff like that would have been great. Basically just making all of Dante's arsenal useful.

One thing I always appreciated about DMC2 was that it gave you all the combat styles up front; sword, gun, block/dodge, etc. In the other ones you had to switch these through menus. Didn't all the games after this have a Bloody Palace feature going forward?
Remember: Real gamers never skip DMC2
I'll cop to not being a real gamer then.
@@tenyokensekia8088 It's a reference to the crowbat video for DMC2 with the same name. Pretty funny video.
@@maxxam181 Oh ok!
Funny enough, i bought the DMC HD Collection and DMC2 just instantly crashes despite all fixes that work for 1 and 3
Real gamers don't play that shitty series 💀
cant wait for the next 3 dmc reviews and me+josh being 20 years older until the review drops! Great video
57:00 in dante must die mode, every boss uses its attacks on you all at the same time. Its basically impossible to not get hit unless you stand in a very specific spot where youre out of range of most attacks and just fire the missile lsuncher. Yes i played through the game on dante must die. Its actually somewhat fun on that mode
I am so glad that you mentioned the Diesel product placement because I played this game decades ago and I was beginning to think that I had imagined it. It seems too stupid to be real
Binney pls PLay DEE EMM SEA TWO
I saw the No coming as I remember this game 'fondly' and it made my day when it happened!
DMC2 IS BEST
Ah man, DMC2. I remember that article, getting so excited after DMC1, spending all my pocket money and... Yeah. Great breakdown.
Have you considered doing a play through of Alundra? Amazing art style, exceptional story, difficult and clever dungeons... It's a really beautiful Zelda-like on PS1, horrifically underrated.
No.
It’s also a testament to how the series recognizes every game’s existence, regardless of its quality, and I think there’s integrity and dignity in that.

i was searching for a comment like this lmao
Excellent video. As someone that couldn't make it past the first few hours, I've always wanted a deep dive into what made Devil May Cry 2 really bad from beginning to end, but could still present the information in an interesting and entertaining form. This was absolutely perfect.
Thank you for the video Josh. I got all the Devil May Cry games on Steam, I remember playing 3 as a kid on the PS2 and recently I got curious about them. Beat the first one, enjoyed the atmosphere and gameplay a lot. Jumped into the second one, and other than a few cool things it was a tiresome experience. Started Lucia's playthrough and I was already too burnt out to finish, and that was it. After watching this, though, I'll jump back at 3 and finish from there. Thanks man! Great review
