I’ve been playing for 35 years, and this is the first theory lesson I’ve understood since Mel Bay Book 1.
Playing the G D Em C with a variety of Root, first inversion, and second inversion is a quite satisfying. And the idea of practicing within this as a limitation makes it an exercise in mindfulness.
I also discovered about 3 fragments of Phish songs hiding in there. I can see immediately that they’re all there somewhere.
    Thank you.

So happy to hear that. Thanks so much for sharing! Theory is all about intervals & chords or scales on one string approach! Please enjoy playing through chords! Those are basic training on ear training & theory knowledge. I V vi- IV so you can change keys!

It made me try one more last time for learning music and it opened my door. Gradually my progress became visible in my eyes how I want to play. I learned guitar by ear when I was younger, and it unfortunately hurt me as a musician. I never had a teacher to show me what I didn't know, so I was satisfied to play any song I heard and create by feel. I eventually realized that I was very limited, because I had no real understanding of how things fit together. Tomo has helped me map out how to rebuild my playing and thus be better at creating music. So grateful to him for being an inspired teacher, and for sharing it on the TH-cam. Triads... who knew? for anyone coming to this at a later date... What helps is to actually look for a diagram of all notes on the guitar and rewrite it yourself using only i.e. notes from C major. There are only four root positions on the first 12 frets and then they repeat. Once you get comfortable and can pick them without thinking move to all first inversions. again, only 4 positions then move to second inversions.
I found that easier than doing all inversions on the low strings and then moving up by a string. you actually do focus on only one thing - a triad in a root position (then first inversion, then second).
Another thing that is important and will help you to learn the fretboard: When doing the root position, and you are comfortable, start thinking about where is your root. That way you'll memorise the "C" note. As you move to the first inversion, do the same for the "E" note and eventually "G" as you get to the second inversion.
    Then move to D, E, F, G, A, B chords...
bonus tip: might sound strange, but before you sleep, imagine yourself doing your triad and think about what note is where. It helps consolidate what you were learning through the day. Do it each day for about five-ten minutes and stick to it until you can do it without thinking. Guitar is much as driving. First you need a lot of conscious effort, but then it becomes second nature and you're shifting through gears and gliding through curves without a thought.

I've been playing the instrument for 15 years, and I was always frustrated about simply picking up tabs and not knowing what's going on musically (for eg, oh they switch from the fourth chord to a fifth). Trusting the process and just consistently practicing (even if its just 15 minutes everyday) has helped tremendously! I can SEE MORE now! You've lessons have literally changed my life. As a self taught guitar player, I noticed after years that there is steps I skipped, and I still just focused to play better at what I know and enjoy what I do. But then I hit a "wall". I did not know what I was supposed to learn next, and even worse, I did not know what to ask or look for. This lesson helped a lot! My next step is to memorize the second string notes, not by doing the "octave" shortcuts, literally learn it by heart, and then practice to get comfortable with the triads and each chords' inversions and locations. To minor any chord, just flat the third, and to diminish any chord, just flat the fifth. Thank you!

This is exactly what I am wanting to learn on the guitar. I can play pretty much any chord on the piano, and I understand inversions very well. I know how to make a chord minor vs major. But the guitar, is like the freaking human genome! So, I am focusing on learning the fret board, and then I predict that I will FLY! Triads will be next. Can't wait. I completely agree that chord shapes are not as good as actually knowing the notes! Focusing on chord shapes is what brought me to my knees in the past. I would hit a road block because I couldn't play a certain shape and I didn't know where else on the fretboard that chord might live. Or how to add a 7th, or make it minor. SO EXCITED! I feel like i might finally learn to actually play the guitar!

Nice lesson! I have been playing in bands for over 20 years in front of some pretty large crowds. But, not knowing all these triads means I have been trying to communicate with only a limited number of "words" to express myself. Like when learning mathematics, sometimes it is good to go back to basics and fill in the missing concepts.

We are lucky to be living in a time where there are so many resources to learn guitar, but the amount of information can also be overwhelming. This is the perfect example of a bite sized piece that is so important and fundamental, taught by a master player and teacher. I appreciate the patience and pace with which this is taught. I have learned something here. I need to practice it and build upon it, but I now have a foundation. I’ve been playing for a few years and I have a decent intermediate level of understanding regarding theory, but this really made sense and I now completely understand this very small part of playing guitar. Thank you for this Tomo. Your expertise is very much appreciated.

I love watching your videos and always learn a lot
While watching this and playing the triads (I already knew how to play them but never understood the notes), I wrote down every position like this:
    D triad
    notes: A-D-F#
    Root position
    Root - M3rd - 5th
    D - F# - A
    do - mi - so
    1st inversion
    M3rd - 5th - Root
    F# - A - D
    mi - so - do
and did the same for the 2nd inversion and noticed how just moves forward! So easy and simple.
I usually don't write down stuff, but this definitely made things click and put 2 and 2 together for me. Thanks :)

Again, another old guy, beginner on guitar for years, but I know a lot of theory from piano/vocals. And literally, the guitar lightbulb went off when I watched this video and it all started flooding in. (this was before you had started talking about minor chords) I had to stop the video to see if I was right. And wow, I was!
When you know where you are in the triads (root/1st/2nd inversions), and you know a root's structure is 1-3-5, then where is your minor? Flat the third. Sus? Sharp the third. Maj7? Flat the root. 7th? Double flat the root. Augmented? Sharp your 5. Diminished? Flat that 5th like Charlie Parker would! 9ths, 11ths and 13ths are there to find too!
And with the knowledge of which inversion you're in (and the specific triad played), you then know which note/finger you need to adjust to change your chords (which aren't always chords but notes 1-3-5, 3-5-1, 5-1-3). And now because of this video (and your videos in general), I now know on the fretboard where my fingers are, which inversion I'm in, thus which place in the triad I'm in, and what I need to do to change the chord.
Tomo, I never thought I would understand as much as I did about guitar in 30 minutes. You sparked all of this, and now my mind is flying with ideas. Thank you so much!

    🙏
The biggest takeaway from this is your philosophy.
    Don't compare
    Don't worry
    Don't expect too fast
    Be kind to yourself
As an adult with un-medicated ADHD, my hyperactive mind is always racing to two steps beyond where I am right now. Your patient approach reminds me to slow down and learn the lesson deeply.

Thank you Tomo!! “Learn one thing at a time”. It’s so easy to forget as I rush to gain fluency. The first thing you learn in ballet is 1st position. The great dancer Rudolph Nureyev said he always started his daily routine in first position!!

Been playing and studying theory for over 10years and it wasn’t until this video where I had a major breakthrough with my understanding of the neck. I am truly grateful. It was not “dry” haha

Thank you for this. Your passion for teaching and sharing the gift of music knowledge with others is amazing! I really enjoyed this lesson as I’m just starting to memorize the entire fretboard and was also hoping to learn some triads. Great stuff sir!🤘❤️

So great to hear that. Thank you! No memorization! Slowly to understand with triads on the fretboard (and Major scale)
