    Hi again, you have some wonderful fish there, l have kept Discus for a few years now with varying degrees of success! But would still call myself a newbie. I think when you set out some mistakes are inevitable. I started off with a bare bottom tank and this did work pretty well, but then l made two mistakes, one trusting a neighbor to feed my fish when l went away, then moving to a bigger planted tank. I can't explain why but they never thrived & eventually l gave up. After a break from Discus l put 15 Punchard Discus into my 750L tank with a large sump. Kept away from plants but with a pool filter sand substrate & some crushed coral in the sump yes my ph is so low l do worry about a crash & lots of interesting bog wood l am very happy with a semi blackwater tank look, and have 3 pairs in there who spawn on a regular basis, the only company they have is 2 Geophagus who turn the substrate over nicely. The secret sauce this time was installing a constant drip water change system, clean water is definitely the key. Would say get as big a tank as you can, don't overstocked unless you love water changes & never go away and don't go down the planted tank route until you are really confident. They are wonderful fish, keep thinking l should turn my 3,000 litre system over to the discus but keeping that at 28°C would be very expensive!

    Hi! I have been watching your channel. New to discus I have a question about how much food to feed each day. I have 8 stendkers 3-5". I give them bh, dried blk worms, some aquaticfoods pellets. If yoh could tell me how much of each food and how many times a day. Thanks! Much appreciated!

    • @AquariumAdventures
      @AquariumAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi - At smaller sizes I like to feed little and often. If you can manage 2 or 3 times a day that would be great, difficult to give exact measurements for food s all tanks are different, but start small and build up - if there is food left after say an hour or so, then that is too much. Hope that helps!

    Hi there,
    We have a 140L tank with a mix of fish. We have one large discus and one large angle in there and have just introduced a new discus the same size. We are noticing the angel fish and old discus are very much bullying the newbie and he won’t leave the corner. What would you recommend? Is this normal. Do we give it a a couple of days. It’s very stressful to watch :(

    • @AquariumAdventures
      @AquariumAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You only have 2 discus total? That might be the problem as it's better have a group (I suggest 6 minimum) as it spreads the aggression. You would then probably need to think about a bigger tank too though.

    Hello, new subscriber here. I was hoping you could help me out. My husband and I just got a 280 gallon tank and we want to have discus fish. Along, with bala sharks, angel fish, powder blue gourami, and neon tetra for the dither fish. We have some drift wood and rocks and plants in the middle of the tank and some areas for the tetra to escape too. My question is how many of each fish would you recommend is a good number? We have had fish tanks before so we are use to the frequent water changes, and checking all of the chemical's on a very regular basis so we both feel comfortable with having discus. Could you please help us figure out how many of each would be a good balance. Thank you and we really enjoyed your video.

    • @AquariumAdventures
      @AquariumAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi - I dont want to put you off, but I don't think I'd go with those choices. Bala sharks get HUGE and are happy in groups, id be worried about a huge bioload, and whether they would out compete the Discus for food / unintentionally bully them. Instead of neon tetras, maybe try cardinal tetras, they look similar but are a little bigger so less likely to be a meal for the Discus (I speak from experience!)
      I'd go with maybe 12 - 15 Discus and 100 tetras?

    Re tank sizes, I haven't kept fish for decades, about 3, and am confused by how everyone gives tank size in volume, I was looking at two tanks, 160 and 200L but the increased volume of the 200 was due to depth, which would have no bearing on surface area and unless thinking has changed would have no affect on the number's or size of fish that could be kept.

      You could have 20 in there and they would still fight, they all want to be the top man.. They want the most food they want 1st choice at everything, in the end they all nip at each other and none are singled out.

    I can already see that you are going to lose that fish hanging at the back! It doesn't seem interested in food and probably is the lowest in the hierarchy and will end up starving to death! Unfortunately this is a major problem with keeping Discus! If you do decide to keep Discus decide beforehand how many you want to add to your tank and release them all together!

    Do not ever mix a Yoyo loach, or any type of suching loaches with Discus.

    You do realize you’re discus are paired up because you have 6 of them right? That’s not a good thing. In the video they are constantly fighting. They should be in odd numbers. That way they don’t pair up. Very nice setup though. I have 9 discus and also a school of 50 cardinal tetras.
