Your process is OK. Only the damage size does not require such big patch repair. This big patch properly can handle a cut of over 1 inch. For nail or screw bolt damages, depending on the diameter of the hole, probably a "mashroom" plug is enough. It can tackle a hole up to 6mm. To demonstrate such a big patch depair, use a cut of corresponding size will make the demo a nice one for the learners.

Well as you cut them metal cords inside you weakened the whole tire overall it should be throwing away scrapped it would be no good not save to use again
