I'm a metalhead, but a dear friend who recently passed away gave me the CD of Mezzanine in 1999. My mind was completely blown away, it was darker and heavier than many stuff I listened. Although I'm still primarily a metalhead, I think Mezzanine is one of the greatest albums ever made. And Risingson is one of the crown jewels, you don't need any drugs at all for this song to take you through a trip. Thank you Nail for introducing me to MA, may you rest in peace. EDIT: Wow, I didn't think this comment would get so many likes. 🙏 I want to give more info about Nail, in case some people who read this maybe met him as well. He was the Turkish bartender of the Cactus Bar at Green Lanes Road in London during late 90s-early 00s. Unfortunately I wasn't in London during his final years, but I learned that we lost him because of alcoholism at the early age of 47. I wanted to point this out, because we are losing so many dear people because of alcohol/drug addiction. So if you're struggling with addiction, please get help for god's sake, we need nice, kind, sensitive people like Nail to be around longer...

You aren't alone in your praise for this coming from the Metal direction myself also. This music is both engaging, atmospheric, imaginative, and thematic all in one stroke. You may also have an ear for Wax Tailor and Portishead as well. Trip Hop was something else.

Both agree and disagree. Yeah, 90's and 2000's were probably some of the most unique decades in music history, but there is plenty of great and futuristic stuff coming out nowadays, it just rarely gets mainstream attention. Of the top of my head I can name Magdalena Bay's "Imaginal Disk" and Injury Reserve's "By The Time I Get To Phoenix".
It's out there, just gotta know where to look (Bandcamp, Rate Your Music, etc).

Before beat-matching ProTools was in widespread use. Having perfectly-synced instruments sounds soulless

    • @asimhussain2344
      @asimhussain2344 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Magdalena Bay (whose music sounds like radio pop) reviving baggy and Injury Reserve naming their album after a Jimmy Webb song… not remotely futuristic compared to Mezzanine album. You can’t go back to the late 90s/early 00s, there will probably never be anything this progressive again.

A collection of songs and stories about people struggling to function socially and emotionally, as a result these people choose to isolate themselves instead of facing a world no doubt will hurt them again.

It's so simple...and so fucking dope. As a musician, it's hard not to envy shit like that, because it's like-you made something immortal, and did with just a few pentatonic notes lolol-like it was effortless. That's often all you need, though, and it's funny how riffs can still sound totally unique just within that capacity.

Oh my favorite band, this song for me is about as others have mentioned getting out of the drug scene... and the kind of seductive nature of drugs/dreaming/being stuck in your own head ... its interesting that he's stuck in a kind of drug house (could be a metaphor for the mind)... that starts to be attacked from the outside... and LOL Grant just leaves into the light. The light/dark contrast is pretty telling as well. This album is full of seductive songs about dark subjects. Sexual obsession and betrayal with Inertia Creeps, Angel which seems to be about inner demons, Dissolved Girl which is about nihilism in the face of love. The dark side does but glitter with Massive Attack.

    [LYRICS]
I seen you go down to a cold mirror
It was never clearer in my era so
You click a shine upon your forehead or
Check it by the signs in the corridor
You light my ways through the club maze
We would struggle through the dub daze
I sink myself in hair upon my lover
It's how you go down to men's room sink
Sad we talk how madmen think
I sink myself in hair upon my lover
I don't know her from another miss
I don't know you from another
See me run now you're gone, dream on
Why you want to take me to this party and breathe
    I'm dying to leave
Every time we grind you know we sever lines
    Where have those flowers gone
    Long time passing
Why you keep it testing, keep on tasking
    I keep on asking
    Toy-like people make me boy-like
    Toy-like people make me boy-like
They're invisible, when the trip it flips
They get physical, way below my lips
And everything you got hoi-poloi like
Now you're lost and you're lethal
And now's about the time you gotta leave all
    These good people, dream on
Nicer than the bird up in the tree top
Cheaper than the chip inside my lap top
All the variations you could do with me
Nicer than the girl up in your mind you're free
    Automatic crystal remote control
We come to move your soul
You're gonna fade into the background

See me run! Now I'm gone!! As for myself It's always been my own choice of words, "I've Got To Get Out Of Here!" Eerie sounds!! Weird lyrics, "Why you trying to take me to this party and breathe, I'm dying to leave’"........

I honestly legitimately can't believe I used to listen to this as a terminally uncool 16 year old girl in suburban Pennsylvania in 1997, I mean, how in the hell did I even connect with this? But this album meant more to me in that year than food or oxygen, no lie. It's truly strange to think of now. I guess what it was, the thing was, I was in an extremely academically competitive high school and under enormous pressure with no outlet, and this music took me to a really dark place that I couldn't go to in the real world. Unfortunately later in life I found my way to those places myself. But I still have a lot of love for this track, it got me through a really bad, really nihilistic negative space in my head a long time ago. Kind of crazy listening to it again all these years later. ❤ RDJ
