    You are such a blessing. My 7year old Hydrangea Limelight browns very fast. This was the first year I noticed it did not stay pink longer like the past years. I will try this method thank you!

      Glad we could help! it is definitely worth trying. If you have the space you might want to consider planting a selection of other varieties, especially later and earlier flowering sorts. That way you will ensure a succession of flowering and if this works for you (and it should), you should be able to have lots of gorgeous flowers (regardless of the summer night humidity and temperatures). Don't forget to keep us all posted of your progress. • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are very welcome. The "trick" is to prune to early to stimulate strong, vigorous growth, then trim that growth to make them bushy and delay the flowering so that they set flower buds in cool evening conditions. The best color is achieved when we are able to avoid hot, sticky, humid summer nights. The timing in each region varies, so you will probably have to tinker a bit with the dates of the second trim. The important thing is to avoid the humid nights but leave enough time for the flowers to form and fill out, before the arrival of hard frosts.

    Does the pruning method work on dwarf varieties like Bobo, Fire light tidbit, and Tiny quick fire? Thanks for your videos, they are so helpful!

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes, we do it to some of these selections too. That's how we get extra bushy plants and stagger the flowering to come in at later dates, for our partnering garden centers: to stock during the late summer and Fall seasons.
      That said, it works best on vigorous, larger growing and quicker to mature selections, and of course, it depends also on your location i.e. length of the growing season in your locality.
      So, you might have to experiment a little and perhaps if you are in a colder shorter season area, start earlier.
      We hope this helps.

    Bought one in flower in early summer, and had to look at muddy pink blooms for months now.😒 If I try your 2x pruning next year, will that also make the plant not reach its full height no matter how many years I have it??? David, the Strawberry Sundae that I bought after seeing your video, is glorious color and very happy and healthy. The pink blooms on that one are even prettier than on BoBo

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, trimming them twice will make them bushier and shorter as well as delaying the flowering - the key is leaving enough time for them to regrow and flower before the first frosts arrive in your area. Great to hear about the Strawberry Sundae it is a lovely performer. When time and space allows you may wish to check out Berry White and Little Hottie another two very good forms from First Editions plants.

    Does the double prune work on hydrangea paniculata? I want my hydrangea paniculata to flower late in autumn.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The ones that I am pruning in this video are types of Hydrangea paniculata, so yes it works👌👍. However, there are many different selections that flower early and late, and behave differently depending upon the conditions where you live. So, you might have to do some trialing and tinkering with pruning times to get the effect with your plants you are looking for.
      FYI, the one that we feature here (Hydrangea Quick Fire Fab®), is a wonderful early flowering sort that (as you can see in this video) responds really well😉

    Do these bloom on old or new wood? And how do we prepare them for winter?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They flower on new wood, which is why they are normally pruned in early spring. Here's a link to one of our most popular videos that will explain how to do it: th-cam.com/video/Z6STEztMaAQ/w-d-xo.html
      As for winter, they are very hardy, so the good news is that you don't have to do anything to them!
      In this video (also on this channel): th-cam.com/video/jLqmDOMPQJs/w-d-xo.html David explains more about where they come from and why they are so hardy and reliable, and in this one you'll see more tips and suggestions too.

    I live in Joliet Illnois and planted two of these fabs on the Southside of my home, do you think prunning in mid June would work for me in Zone 5B or should I wait a full growing season?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends upon how early you can trim the fading flowers and the weather conditions (length of growing conditions) in the autumn. I would suggest that since the flowers are going to discolor in the heat of the summer anyway, and you won't do any harm to the plants, you might as well snip them back and try it! Just try to give the new growth as much time as you can to grow out and reach the flowering stage. So, if I were you I would snip off the old flowers as they fade and begin to discolor, then water the plants during any prolonged dry spells, and mulch them to help retain moisture at their roots etc. and then assuming you get a nice, mild autumn you should get a good round of secondary blooms 🤞😉.

    Will these be ok in some standing water during rain?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't like wet soggy conditions, so that might be dicey. To help keep the roots in better aerated soil, you might be wise to mound/ raise up planting positions

    Hi I am a new subscriber and I am thankful for all the advise you give. I have a potted panicle hydrangea. When I bought it from the nursery it was covered with gorgeous blooms. We live in Irving, TX and last winter we had one episode of 4 to 5 days of snowing. I thought my hydrangea died, I had not mulched or protected it since I thought TX winter is not going to hurt it. I was pleasantly surprised that it put out new leaves in the summer, but It has not flowered yet. I fertilized it once in and I did again today with Miracle grow powdered rose fertilizer. How can I make it flower?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the sub. welcome to our channel. Most of the panicle hydrangeas are very tough, hardy and resilient and the description you outline is what we would expect to hear about. Some are slower to flower - especially if they get a later start. There really isn't much you can do to hasten the flower, except good culture, mulching, watering etc., during any hot dry periods. We would expect you will shortly start to see some embryonic flower buds appearing in the tips of the new growth.

      I am sorry to hear you are having this problem. They normally are good transplanters that settle in and grow away well. At this time of year (summer) thorough watering is very important, and sometimes if plants appear dry when I get them home, I dunk the whole plant "pot n all" in a bucket of water to get it well hydrated before planting. Now that it is in the ground - good deep watering like I am doing in this video is going to be important: th-cam.com/video/xybT3obydPw/w-d-xo.html and a layer of mulch will help too.
      If it continues to look poorly, then its time for "the ICU or ER" and intensive care!
      For instance, you might have to prune away the top (half to a third) to help reduce transpiration and perhaps erect a temporary shade tent over the plant and of course keep watering.
      If you are in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern USA region: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ then it might be worth checking out the plants at some of our partnering garden centers because as you may have noticed in the video we send them nice, big, healthy, bushy and well-formed specimens that are grown in carefully formulated composts that hold up well and facilitate quick establishment. In addition, they are usually in flower when they get them in - and the experts at the centers know how to look after them, so they remain in peak condition and are ready to get off to an good start.
