      The jails in Canada have menus for the inmates. They serve steak,pork tenderloin, shrimp and lobster, fried chicken, bacon and eggs with home fries, coffee and all the fresh fruit and salads you can eat. You can have a computer or tablet in your cell to lay and watch movies or shows all day. You can get a college or university degree free of charge. Many immigrants can't believe it and some will commit crimes to get in there.

    I've been in (Dutch) prison for killing someone. A guy who I totally didn't know, but he decided to go to different houses, claim to be from the housing company and asked to come in for some work. At my moms house she saw him with her purse and when she asked him what he was doing he beat her up.
    By pure chance I decided to visit her that day, at that time, and when I entered the flat, he had already done it, he actually passed me in the hallway as he was leaving, so when I found my mom, still alive, I called the cops, and told them to find him before I did, if not he would be dead. About 20 minutes later he was, I had run him over with my car about 7 times. Called the police and that was it.
    Got to prison, 12 years, but here when you go to prison and you behave you get out after 2/3 of your time, and I did. 8 years later (last year) I was released.
    No idea why I felt compelled to tell this story, I just did :)

      it used to be the people were better, the blacks weren't slaves but from the colonies, they of course had it harder, the white people had a sense of natural justice, even the poorer ones, there was a lot of work put in to better things for everyone, and for a while the outlook was bright. it is changing now, it is getting much more violent, the worst are the young black kids killing young black kids. I sometimes wonder if it is genetic. That is not a racist comment, they really are much more into hard violence and gangs than the young white kids.

      Aunt Melisa, if you like prison documentaries, check out those in Haiti, Africa, South America, etc...the USA is a country club compared to those there! Between the weather, disease due to water/food/insects/rodents, corruption, etc, the USA definitely has the advantage in Stark contrast! I agree that the UK looks like club med compared to most in the US, but I'll take one in America any day over ANY 3rd world country's prison. Even worse is the fact that MANY prisoners in those countries have somewhat minor infractions, or even moreso are INNOCENT! But due to corruption, disorganization (check out Haiti's prisons), improperly staffed systems, etc, these innocent/minor infraction charged inmates do not receive due process and sit in there to rot and die. Those poor souls I pray for...at least here they are protected from the elements, receive 3 squares a day, have a bed, and receive medical treatment. The inmates in the UK and US are not there because the Hilton was booked, they committed heinous acts most of them. Some of those in other countries that I mentioned are doing 15 years for stealing a sack of potatoes! And every single one of them have to struggle each day to merely survive until the next day. My heart goes out to those.

    David that murdered his wife, I honestly understand how that happened. Its why when its over (a relationship) its over, get away from each other, move somewhere else and live your lives. Don't bring your new boyfriend home to meet your husband you live with, and ask him for money to pay for the date. what did you think was going to happen? this is why if they don't love you, its time for them or you to leave. Sell the house, split the money, and go your own ways. that Home brewing, that is some scary stuff, you would smell it for miles when they released the gas. easy enough to make your own yeast (basically sourdough starter) and yeah, it could easily get to 12-15 % in strength, so 2 bottles would get a 100kg man drunk.

    I remember the time I served back in '92 for just a simple B&E (burglary, I think you call it in the UK) and my time in the ohio state men's reformatory wasn't anything like this.This place is civil and the staff treat you like a person and the food,the fuckin food though not fine dining I'm sure is actually food not something that you would question feeding your dog.America needs to sit down with the Minister of prisons and reform this shit system over here because to be quite honest if you warehouse men in over crowded prisons,feed them slop and don't give them any chance at redemption all you're doing is taking a low risk lv 1 or 2 inmate and turning him into a more efficient monster,because man just like any other animal will adapt to his environment.WHen I come out of prison aat 21 I didn't trust anyone,I had anxiety and depression.I had huge anger issues getting into fights constantly and was claustrophobic and didn't like being touched.So in short had it not been for some key players in my life that stuck with me thru thick and thin I might have ended back in the joint with a longer sentence maybe even a whole life sentence or maybe a death sentence.American prisons are where they send nice guys who've made mistakes to become monsters and monsters thrive there unlike UK joints that actually seem to try and help you rebuild yourself.

  • @mchammer3432
    @mchammer3432 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This doc is well done. Clearly loosing your freedom is the ultimate punishment for any human being. Committing an act of murder is always heinous, I may not totally agree with allowing these prisoners the amenities they have in their prisons, but I think i understand why they are given these things. Unfortunately here in the USA where our "justice" system profits off of the incarceration of poor black, brown and whites at every level!. Our society has become indifferent to how we treat those in prison, they are fed "food" that is not suitable for human consumption. They are subjected to abuse from c.o's, over crowding, deprivation of water in certain instances, there is a sever lack of training programs, and little to no effort given to actually rehabilitating those who are serving short term or medium term sentences, and when they are thrown back into society we continue to shun them, label them as ex cons, make it supremely difficult for them to find work or even find a place to live, and then are astounded when so many are unable to stay out of prison. At the very least certain countries seemed to have figured out a way to rehabilitate the majority of the prisoners in their respective countries and as such it is proven by recidivism rates. We here in the states have the highest recidivism rate of any country in the world, AND the highest incarceration rate of any country on the planet... think about that!! So a murderer in the UK may appear to have it "easier" than here in the states.. but on the whole, the way a society treats its most "undeserved" or under served can be linked to how much crime both violent and non violent, that country experiences.... I think if we were to model ourselves after Norway.. which has the LOWEST recidivism rate and the LOWEST incarceration rate in the world, we would actually see less crime as a result. They have murders in Norway as well but at a much lower rate than we here in the US. They rank somewhere near the bottom of 192 countries some where around 180 ish, we are closer to 83. By comparison the UK ranks around 163 out of the 192 countries. So we can all scoff at the idea that the murderers in this documentary are treated like human beings despite their crimes, but there is reason to understand why the govts in other countries go that route vs the one we take here. Are we actually trying to be better and reduce crime? Or are we doing nothing more than exacerbating the issue?

    Many years ago, I had to do a 51 month prison term in the state of Florida. It was for trafficking drugs. No air conditioning at all...ever...in hot and humid swampy Florida! Also, you have to work for free. Usually on a work squad that clears the sides of the highways of weeds with a weed eater. All day. 5 days a week. In the hot ass Florida weather. Only to return to the compound, to a dorm without air conditioning! None of these amenities that they have in the UK. It's so very different. Almost inhumane conditions. It was a miserable experience. However, I got out intact. Moved back to California. Started a business, made a nice life for myself, and have lived a good, law abiding life ever since. I guess it was good, in that it kept me from ever breaking the law again.
