      As cliché as it may sound, but read the question carefully, break-down the question, and see what the examiner is asking you- for example, 'Explain why qualitative methods are thought to be more reliable than quantitative methods? (10 marks)
      First read this question carefully,-
      Break down- the examiner is asking you to compare quantitative methods with qualitative methods
      Next we need to know what are quantitative methods- so know quantitative methods include
      questionnaires, structured interviews, content analysis, surveys (asses reliability)
      Understand reliability- which literally means that you are getting the same results over and over again- quantitative methods are high in reliability because
      1. We are looking at stats, numbers which are free from any biases
      2. We can carry out comparative analysis, see trends across results
      Next move to the analysis of qualitative methods- which include- unstructured interviews, participant observation, case studies ( asses how these methods lack reliability, in which you can write:
      - qualitative methods will include researcher bias
      - while carrying out unstructured interviews, the respondent will give socially desirable answer because they know they are being studied, observed
      - reliability can also lack because qualitative methods mainly generate in depth results which are open to researcher interpretations, which tells us that the interpretations will be unique to each researcher, thus the results will be difficult to replicate.
      With this example, I'm just helping you to answer a question, I have given you some pointers, that can help you navigate a question. I have not provided you with all the reasons that you can write while answering the question, I have discussed above.
      Hope this helps!!

    Maam you didn't talk about Positivism? Can you explain in a lil paragraph, also Thanks alotttttttttttttttt.

    • @Baiiba
      @Baiiba  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Positivism is a branch of sociology that seeks to explain that society is made up by structures. According to positivists, the societal structures like family, schools, media and religion determine societal norms and values. For example, schools (a societal structure) through the system of punishments and rewards instills values of honesty, punctuality and competition in students. Thus, positivists argue society is over and above individuals. Moreover, positivists believe that society should be studied objectively by using quantitative research methods like structured interviews, questionnaires, surveys or content analysis.

      Sociology Coursebook by Jonathan Blundell

    • @Baiiba
      @Baiiba  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no one way you can learn all theories, but I think so the best possible way to learn sociological theories is by thinking about those theories through the lens of your real life, for example, when Marx theorizes that the society is divided into two classes (bourgeoisie and the proletariat), you see that class divide in real life too, you see how the elite classes/ big business corporations are exploiting the working classes by giving them low wages- Moreover if we wish to theorize feminist theory through the lens of our real life we see patriarchal relations all around ourselves, the oppression that females face in the society, for example, in Pakistani society all important decisions are made by men, or how some women are victims of domestic violence, harassment-
      Yeah, so these are just some of the example that I can think from the top off my head,
      Learn your Own way, either make notes/ highlights imp points in book/ connect theories to real life in order to get a better understanding- I did this-
      So good luck!! I hope you really well:))

    Is structuralism and positivism same and interpretivism and functionalalism

    • @Baiiba
      @Baiiba  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. Functionalists believe in the principles laid down by positivists whereby positivists believe that society is made up of structures (family/ religion/ media) that socialize different norms, values, set of behaviors and attitudes into individuals. Whereas, on the flip side, we have interpretivists who say that individuals are the one's who form the society, who lay down the norms and values for the society and individuals are one's who lay down the foundations of different structures.
      EASY WAY TO REMEMBER
      1. Positivism> Functionalism
      2. Positivism (opposite to) Interpretivism
      3. Structuralist approaches in sociology include > Functionalism, Marxism and Feminism
      Hope this helps Ayub!

    I think you forgot to tell about positivism

    • @Baiiba
      @Baiiba  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fayek I have but very briefly.
      But still here you go:
      Positivism is a branch of sociology that seeks to explain that society is made up by structures. According to positivists, the societal structures like family, schools, media and religion determine societal norms and values. For example, schools (a societal structure) through the system of punishments and rewards instills values of honesty, punctuality and competition in students. Thus, positivists argue society is over and above individuals. Moreover, positivists believe that society should be studied objectively by using quantitative research methods like structured interviews, questionnaires, surveys or content analysis.
      Hope this helps!

    Hey i need advice...is this chapter the most difficult one or are the other chapters going to be more tricky? I personally find this chapter really difficult and don't know if i should switch sociology with any other subject

    • @Baiiba
      @Baiiba  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Momina, theories and methods Chapter demands both learning and understanding of the research methods, how to conduct a research or generally how are sociologists trying to understand broader societal dynamics. I would recommend that please carefully go through this chapter, learn its key concepts and then try to relate it to real life situations. For example, all these articles that you read on the internet are considered as secondary sources of data- why? Because You as a researcher are not writing the articles by yourself, however, what you're doing is that just reading articles written by someone else and then using it for - let's say your own research paper- See this is how you link a research method to real life situations.
      Another recommendation from my side would be to appear in your school exam for Sociology and see if you are getting a satisfactory grade- if you are then you're good to go with socio
      About other chapters, they are way more interesting than theories and methods. So yeah, confession moment- Theories and Methods is a dry+ boring chapter but - but if you do not have a strong grip on this chapter then generally you'll struggle with sociology. But personally, I believe, there's always room for improvement if one is dedicated to the subject.
      Hope this helps!

    Can sociology be prepared in 15 days ?

    • @Baiiba

      The short answer is No. You at least need 6-7 months to understand different theories and also practice past papers.
