concrete examples from everyday life, history, and contemporary events.
I'm a retired sociology professor, having taught at a community college for 27 years. I'm so grateful for these talks. This man is absolutely wonderful, not only in what he discusses, but how he delivers the material. He's so right: Sociology is a unique breed of discipline. I may be biased, but I imagine sociology as the center of a flower and the other disciplines he mentioned are the petals. They are all part of the flower, but sociology is at the center. What can you do with a degree in sociology? You'll find sociology majors in business, journalism, law, government, healthcare, education, and many other areas. Studying sociology will open your mind and make you a more informed, well-rounded and engaged citizen. Thank you, NYU!!
You're so right and you know what? I know people who've studied pure law and graduated in the top 2% of their class but have the worst people skills you could imagine. No firm would dream of hiring them....but someone with a sociology degree who can critically think, write and form arguments would breeze past them when going up for a job.....I'm a neuroscientist by profession but have always been fascinated by the humanities....it's that crucial intersection between creativity and science.....without it we'd be finished as a society....

I've been reading The Sociological Imagination by C. Wright Mills and I must say I've been trying to discuss this matter with other people who are enlightened by the topic. The professor is genuine and light which lifts the burden of a complex topic into one that many may understand. It is truly a gift of teachers to evaluate and interpret their understandings of readings into comprehensible and coherent concepts. Late in the game but thank you!

I'm so excited to have found this professor! He makes learning so much fun, and honestly I kept stopping the video to go research things/people he was mentioning. That's how you know you've spurred someone to learn. Thank you for posting. Looking forward to your other videos. Near the beginning of the lecture, you speak of how we got here. I'm writing an essay and have total mind block
I've studied sociology for 20 years and I'm 36. I can tell you this....the social racial operation of oppression is all invasive. It is absolutely one of the worst (if not the very worst) social issues you could find in the scope of sociology as a social phenomena, or social problem. The fact there are many white sociologists who do not highlight this as their findings, means they are complicit, an ally to the social force, knowing how invasive the problem is and not highlighting it enables covert operation. Like this man said, sociology involves all aspects and every area of human activity...including psychology. I am content with the fact that sociology is my life's study and I study everyday, and sometimes all day. Sociology is such an important field of study and pertains to the very essence of our lives that sociologists are doing a disservice to society by letting the study appear as 'just another course at university'. As it was said, "sociology is in a league of it's own, but is connected to everything else".
This is one of my favourite course series on TH-cam.
This has really helped me! I'm going to be going to college soon and want to study Sociology- This has certainly erased my doubts on whether I'd like it or not.

@@MrDsk777 Thank you, D K for your kind message. I have not actually returned to college, but I purchased a good-level distance learning/online course, and several textbooks. I enjoy learning about a number of subjects. Since my previous comment I became very interested in Geopolitics, and was astounded to learn how strongly geographical features influence political decisions by the world's governments. Tim Marshall has written two amazing books on the subject; 'Prisoners of Geography', and 'The Power of Geography'. He can be found discussing this subject on You Tube.
The most important area of study for me is the study of the bible, which I have studied for forty years plus. So many prophetic and eschatological teachings in the bible can be seen to have occurred exactly as predicted, and are unfolding unmistakably today. For example, one has only to look at the build up of arms factories in Syria and the Persian Gulf area over the past decade, by Russia and Iran, to see how these countries, together with Lebanon, Sudan and Libya and a number of other countries in the region surrounding the Holy land, are planning and preparing to invade Israel. Turn to Ezekiel chapters thirty eight and thirty nine to see this foretold in detail. Read also what the outcome is going to be! You will be well ahead of all the current political journalists and commentators!
Note also how the world of the cashless society is being promoted as international banks deal in Bitcoin and virtual currencies, and see also how the one world government is being formed, as foretold by the apostle John in Revelation chapter thirteen, where the coming world dictator is referred to as the beast from the sea, and his right hand man as the beast from the land. The new world order, being enticingly advertised as 'building again better', is coming soon. And it won't be pretty! Safety is only to be found for any individual in the Lord Jesus Christ (Rev. 3 v10). For the world as a whole the day of grace is very soon to give way to the day of judgement. But it is not yet too late for any individual to find safety in Christ.

Interesting introduction into a broad and fascinating field of study. As a multiracial individual finally striving for higher education, it was incredible to hear how such blatant racism and classism dictated much, if not all, admissions into such prestigious schools in the past. These are definitely situations I've been aware of for a while but to hear it put so poignantly just reaffirms my understanding that even the prime educational institutions and intelligence arenas undergo the same evolutionary tribalism as any other in-group/out-group dynamic. Thank Logos for affirmative action and the internet! 😂

As a senior applying to Universities in the US with major of sociology and media studies, this OPENED course is amazing. Professor Harvey Molotch's teaching is more than intriguing! Definitely finishing this course in the coming weeks.

this is great. It amazes me that the SI is being used as a focus for a class. When it first appeared we read it under the covers and discussed it in the coffee shops. The "academic" sociologists just didn't know where to place Mills. And of course he took some of them to task for being somewhat irrelevant to actual society.
I love this lecture very much. I am very new for this field but I would love to learn more as I want to see a positive change in the community.

This is my last year before I get my bachelors in Sociology and he has done a better job explaining/teaching the subject than my past professors. I'm learning even more! lol, not but seriously watch the videos if you need to comprehend sociology! 10/10 Recommend.

Thank you for the lecture. I silently listened to the whole hour lecture, and I have to say...that your right on many things, You have good points like sociology deals with relationships and how it effects social behavior. It's like Psychology, but instead of working on one mind, your working on the societal mindset on how we think. And how society functions. I can't wait to hear more on Sociology.
What happens when a discriminated Minority becomes the Majority? Do they behave any differently from the Majority? Shockingly the answer is NO!
The Minority will now embrace the same hate as the Majority and continue the abuse!
What is disturbing is that Sociologists refuse to study this facet of humanity

@@Thedreamer20015 Can I ask you a question about Sociology? Why is the Dichotomy between the Minority & Majority not being studied?
We know that people behave differently when they are in a mob vs when alone & here we see the diff between being part of the majority(mob) vs the minority(single)
But other areas do not seem to be studied
For eg I was told by a black colleague that I was going to hell - works don't matter, all that matters is belief!
Change the word belief to skin color & suddenly the black man would be lecturing me on how we should judge people based on who they are as people, not for the color of their skin
And yet the religion he belongs to says, "God" doesn't care for who we are as people, only our beliefs, our religion
That was the fate of Jews under Nazi Germany - who they were as people did not matter, only their religion mattered & that got them dumped into gas chambers in hell
And we see my colleague - a black man - openly siding with Nazis and Racists when it came to religion - well, now he was with the Majority religion! And his views changed accordingly
I have written to so many publications, academia, but so far none have replied to me - what is going on?
@@ramaraksha01 I don’t actually know. That’s actually a rather good question ahahaha. I might bring that up in my next class. I can definitely see that being a very relevant question especially right now where race is a massive focus of the public.

This dichotomy is no secret
We see this with Muslims - here in the west they are a minority and tell us that we should not judge them based on religion
They are people just like us, they want the same things as us, we should treat all people equally
Wonderful words - no one disagrees with those views
And then we go to any Muslim-majority country say Pakistan and now we see the same people throwing religion in our faces - all the laws changed to favor Muslims, non-Muslims abused as 2nd class people and no where to be found - whether it is in govt, business, entertainment - it is religious discrimination in your face!
The change happens so quick & amazingly they are not even aware of it!
How is this possible?
Where is the education? the intelligence?
Are we this easily brainwashed by religion?

I have really bad ADHD so trying to pay attention to this entire hour-long video and retain all the information he is giving throughout it is near impossible for me. I literally have to rewind every 5-20 seconds and I'm still confused and overwhelmed and I don't understand what a triangle/ knowing contexts for things have to do with sociological imagination. This is literally only the first week of class too I'm so screwed.
Hello. I too have ADHD. How do you deal with yours? I myself take some vitamins and tranqulizers. It helps a little.
I think I have it too but I was never diagnosed with it, it kinda scares me to find out if I'm right or not, Lol. Though I noticed I can concentrate better if the topic really interests me and if I take some breaks after a while
For a very long time, I majored in Sociology, but there was no major for it in the college of Education. There was a major in History so I was able to use that for a major.

I’m a ME major I completely agree about sociology being the center piece of many disciplines. We have to share ideas with different people absorb different ideas from others. And the industry I wanna work in involves a lot of communication and designing

I have a sociology exam this Friday (it's sunday) and I know literally nothing. I'm crying and trying to cram 5 chapters into my head
@Elegant Oprah I did. Turns out he used the same questions from past quizzes. I got all the questions together and went over them until I memorized them all.
So I got a really good grade and got an A in the class.

CW Mills was a hero of the new left and since this is about one of his top books, it would be only natural for the professor to give Mills' viewpoints which would be with a left wing intent. Unless of course, the professor should have taken a neocon stance on Mills and trashed him. The professor did a good job in explaining what the sociological imagination is from the viewpoint of Mills and how Mills looked at the world.

Perhaps biography and history interplay is exact way to understand the subjectivity and laws of the motion of history. For it intersects power, time and space. It is what sociological imagination is all about.
