    I caught some real big ones this spring.. Tons of 12 to 15in perch and pulled 3 out this year 16in. With the biggest being 16.25in I should have had it mounted but I released it. Early ice in 18 was awesome on the Mississippi but it really seemed to slow down after Christmas and fish were super finicky the rest of the season. It was tough to put a solid day together with a ton of fish.

    A word of warning using hovercrafts on ice. A veteran ice fisherman died on the Mississippi River backwaters near Savanna, Illinois using a hovercraft when he struck a stump while cruising over the ice. The stump caused the hovercraft to flip killing the fisherman instantly. Stumps are almost impossible to see when the ice is snow covered so use extreme caution at all times!

    Something that i have never seen through the ice that i would maybe like to see done is fishing for northern like you would walleye or perch, with jigs.

    • @tylersmith9868
      @tylersmith9868 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheFishingGuru happens all the time. The reason it's not done quite as much is with pike they don't school up together so you could literally sit on a hole staring at your electronics all day. When they hit they usually come in fast and smoke the bait, but not always. Yeah you will mark them on the flasher but it's usually a small window so most people just use set lines and talk etc whilst doing that

    This old man that I met out on the ice a long time ago told me; old timers would put the maggots in their mouths to keep them from freezing when it's really cold.

    I would love to see you do an episode of perch fishing on American Lake and Tacoma Lakewood Washington or if not an episode of perch fishing do an episode of Kokanee fishing get on that Kokanee bite Kokanee is a badass fish to catch they don't get very big but they're landlocked salmon and they're very good to eat so if you do an episode there and you're doing Kokanee and least cooked Kokanee catch him to keep smoking grillem frying them do all three but if you fry them don't deep-fry them pan-fry am the best way to cook them

    Why don't you just drill a hole just for your Marcum? Just watching the line getting tangled up in the transducer drive me crazy! 😂😂

    • @InDepthOutdoorsTV
      @InDepthOutdoorsTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      We move around a lot and doubling the amount of holes drilled would really add a lot more work, so we put up with the tangle or just pull the ducer before the fish gets there.

    • @Mahigeer1
      @Mahigeer1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The single hole allows the lure to be in the center of the cone the flasher projects to the bottom. More accurate placing of the lure on the flasher screen.

    • @tylerglover9794
      @tylerglover9794 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      they're easy to catch, can't seem to stay away from them, once the sun goes down set tip ups with big baits or jig aggressively near the bottom just like you would for walleye and you'll slay em, its easy and tbh they're pretty greasy like if anything a nice cat would fry up better

      Knock on wood that I am not superstitious, but it is a tradition among anglers that the first fish of species should be kissed, so angler can catch more. Otherwise, after you catch your first bass and kiss it, you will catch more bass.

      We have nothing against keeping fish - see our South Dakota episode from a couple weeks ago, for instance - but perch that big are a special resource we want to see reproduce and grow for years to come. There’s a reason they got so big!

    • @PaulyOutdoors
      @PaulyOutdoors 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ed, if you have a chance to catch a mess of Yellow Bass, they are by far one the best tasting fish out there as well! Perch are awesome, don't get me wrong. I love them too, but these Yellows are something else!

    • @tylersmith9868
      @tylersmith9868 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ed Axeman hey Ed, well people of your generation and older believed what you still believe. That you can keep as many fish as you want because they are unlimited. (stupid) so nowadays fishing near any urban area just sucks because everything keeps everything. So we practice something called catch and release. This way we have fun, and keep fishing fun for generations to come. Lots of food at the grocery store.
