    As a young man..I remember my father telling me at the mechanics shop when I saw guy covered in dirt and grease...That's what you call honest work! As I got older it made sense. When you work on cars the personal satisfaction you get when completing aa job is like no other feeling. You have my respect for what you do.

      @@fastinradfordable ... Nah, I'm just happy if I'm on a pad, not dirt, rocks, and gravel. A little grease & grunge just comes with the territory. Even runner carpets & old office "anti-static" mats are great, compared to rocks. Those old office mats will never go to the dumpster if I see em first... office mats clean up real easy, throw some dirt on to soak up the mess & sweep it off, and your ready for the next job.

    MC-7 and MC-6 were my two favorite buses to work on and in the early days of my 38 year career as mechanic for Greyhound Canada!😎

    I thought that ol gal looked familiar, then I saw the huge 'v8' emblem on the right rear panel and I knew for a fact I recognize it! I live in Lebanon, TN and I seen that ol girl roaring through town a couple months ago! I turned around and followed it as far as I could lol, just to hear that sweet beautiful music those Jimmies make. 👌

    Having help for stuff like "fire it up" & "shut it down" is a real time saver, and allows one to quickly spot "terrible problems" like big fuel/oil leaks.

    Hey scott luv your channel been watching for a long while really enjoy your vids as we all get older it gets allot harder working on the ground and under machinery ,give it a thought that an addition to your property an old time service pitt with jacking points built in jack the buses up would make life so much easier for you god bless from down under.

    My bosses used to tell me as long as that compressor built air ,ship that bus for service . If it was Me , it is time for a new compressor. After 27 years service at a major bus garage I , guess I'm just fussy lol.

      The little things like the missing seals on the fan compartment doors make a big difference. Kinda surprised the other bus shops he’s been to didn’t point that out.

      No real surprise, too many shops do schlock work and don’t really pay attention to the subtleties of the designs.

    Scott, make sure you check the brake pedal linkage. Cotter pins can rust or fail, or other things can fail. That area can also rust. On my mc8, the throttle linkage under the floor board has rusted out. Don’t forget to grease those tag axles, if they aren’t grease they can seize in the upright position. Some times the tag brakes will be backed off just a little to avoid them locking easily when brakes are applied a little too hard.

      Not sure on this old of a bus but newer MCI’s have a lot less air applied to the tags then the drives.

      In some jurisdictions, you can't order lift axles anymore, but they (vehicle builder) will put a steerable "tag" axle there to reduce tire scrub. Where I live, lift axles have been outlawed for well over 20 years. Your only option is a steerable axle, or a hard fixed tandem, tridem, or a quad, the fourth axle (and any others) will be steerable axles. Often see quads and quints, the steerable axle is foremost, the final axle is also a steerable axle on a quint.

    I love watching your videos. They're great for me as I try to learn bus maintenance and repairs. I've got a 40ft. Mercedes bus/motorhome with a 14.6L V8. I'm a paramedic, not a mechanic so more used to fixing people than vehicles. Bets wishes from Australia.

    Scott I had a stuck fuel filter on my Detroit 8.3. The problem is my filter wrench slips due to the painted filter. I bought a quart of truck Berliner and started dipping the filters a couple inches like fram filters. Worked great. Dip them twice the night before and they are ready to go in the morning. Never have had them stuck again. Great to see you wrenching again..

      Even before the black coatings, I never had trouble removing an oil of fuel filter. Some are stubborn, but none ever defeated me, and it's not too often that a filter wrench slips. I think someone is overzealous in putting them on there in the first place. But yeah, filters that haven't been off in a long time, can be a bit of a problem.

    hi scott i just finished watching this video that i mentioned in my last comments in last video and i really liked and enjoyed this one alot to and it was nice seeing you work on the mci mc7 detroit diesel 8v71 the filters & changing the oil on the bus looking forwarded to seeing you finish the maintenance on it in your next video or upcoming video always a blast seeing you working on bueses and i noticed that you do get dirty alot i guess that's part of doing the job lol well thankyou as always for the video and upcoming videos .from Randy.ontario,canada stay safe p.s keep a eye on those bats lol and hi kelly glad to see your garden is growing good.

    Scott... are you aware of the check valve in the air dryer that can get debris in it.. preventing the governor from unloading the compressor .. so you get air releases from every 2 or 3 minutes to every 40 seconds.. the check valve is in the discharge port of the AD6 style air dryer.. with the right size socket its easily removed and checked for debris holding the ball off its seat.. perhaps that is why there is a big oil stain where the chain controlled drain is..
    i begged my trashmen to get their truck fixed. it released air about every 20 seconds.. then i noted 2 months later they were driving a new truck.. the old truck had lost its brakes coming out of the landfill and crashed . i then reminded them i told them it was going to fail..

    Just a thought...Lenny's old jenny....build a little shed for it and put it near the pad... at least you could have a huge floor fan running to keep you (and Kelly) cool while working under a bus...be safe, Tim and Cat

    You can use a piece of rope as a gasket to seal the rear hatch
    and improve suction

    You may be able to get Rags from Thrift Stores maybe in the area, their usually pretty cheap. Using a lot cheaper than paper towels even. All the best from Canada

    When the oil filter doesn’t come off, it’s best just to paint it a different color and move on.

      Scott would have to use some really thick paint on that trans filter to fill in all the rust and any pinholes, or do as he always does and just change the filter!

    On the radiator brace you can make one out of 1/4 bar stock,. Cut to length heat up the ends and flatten,. Then drill holes for bolt...

    I see now ,that trans filter really does look old .I missed that in the video.It almost looks original,or you're right ,it was never changed after the trans change to an automatic.I would have thought the trans would have had an internal filter like in a car,but no .I wish cars were like that .Would be a lot easier .Great video .Stay safe.......

    Scott, I would like to learn about air systems. Brakes and leveling systems. My buddy has a foretravel with a cummins. We replaced the exhaust manifold on it a while back. I think I told you about that, common 8.3 problem. It has air leveling and air brakes and probably should bone up on that stuff. Any suggested reading? Maybe this summer I should visit and be an apprintace for a day or so!😁 Any building plans ready for your shop?

      Stan Patterson driver. I did local charter with Coach Travel Unlimited and corporate work with the McDonald’s Big Mac coach in Oakbrook, Illinois.
      Then I drove tours for Consolidated Productions. Then other local stuff on and off after that till about ‘89.

    hey Scott couldn't remember how to get a hold of you. I am looking at purchasing a 1964 GMC PD4106 im pretty well mechanical inclined what all should I look for on this bus? It is already been converted to an RV. It has the Detroit 8v71 with a 4 speed spicer in it. Thanks alot.

As for things to look for when purchasing a bus, you might need to peruse his recorded live streams on the channel as he's been asked that before and gave some good answers. Don't know which one in particular but I think it was at least one stream with his son "Indiana Diesel" live from Lenny within the last 6-9 months.

    I never worked on a Detroit or any heavy equipment, but doesn't that oil pan have a giant dent in the bottom near where the pickup tube would be? Maybe they rested the motor on a wood block if it was pulled for service?

    You could make that support rod real easy with a piece of flat stock or round stock and a welder pretty easy.

    There is allot going on with those busses for maintenance. Some rock bands back in the day had several busses if they were rich enough and didn't want to fly in the states and Canada.

      Tim's Workshop TJY just a handful of groups bought coaches, most leased and still do. It was the mid ‘70’s they discovered custom motor coaches. The country performers had been riding in their own buses for years. In fact Frank Zappa had a couple old buses that had been Loretta Lynns in the mid ‘70’s. He famously renamed them the Fido buses.

    Would you be better converting the mc7 to an air adjustable fan belt drive to simplify belt replacement and the other question is does he carry a new replacement belt in a plastic bag ( keeps the belt factory fresh)?

    What's your take on the 8V71? I am looking at a 1973 GMC 4905 with a 8V71. I have had a diesel mechanic tell me they are REALLY noisy and they are impossible to get parts for. What are your thoughts?

    Air dryers are supposed to pass oil, as opposed to letting it pass on into other areas of the air system, like tanks, lines, valves. That air dryer is doing what it is supposed to do. If anything, check the compressor, passing too much oil. Might be time to rebuild or replace the compressor, but the air dryer is removing oil from the system, as it is supposed to do. It's job is to remove moisture (and oil) from the system and pass clean, dry air into the tanks.

    I’d have thought remote mounting an oil filter, you’d mount it somewhere deliberately easy to access.

    that goo from the air tank is water and oil most likely the compressor has lots of blow by and water from condensation, owner does not drain the tank much.

      Of course it’s oil and moisture from the compressor. That’s the wet tank. It’s usually bad and a shot glass amount tells me he does drain the tanks. I’ve had Gallons come out before

      I would go around and drain water from all the dead leg drains at the end of all the hard air lines all over the shop. They usually had a glass full of water in them!

      Hey Frank I am the owner. I pull the drains everytime I end a trip plus it has an air dryer. It’s got a bad compressor on it. I have another one coming Wednesday along with other parts for it. I am still restoring this old girl this is twice now that i restores it. I love Scott’s work he does it right and he is needed tremendously. A lot of bus shops won’t work on a 49 year old bus

      @@timgraves5498 , nice, shutting down the "keyboard commados"! Truly awesome you have had it that long. I feel lucky to still have the first car I ever owned, and fired it up today. (1977 monte carlo, got it in 1997). I dont drive it that often, but tags & insurance are all current. Couldnt buy it off me for less than a million bucks! (= Not for sale, stays with me as long as it can)

      Any auto parts that sells motor oil is required by federal law to receive used motor oil to be returned to the supplier and eventually recycled.
      Food for thought

      it's an air filtering technique, where the filter media is oil (usually engine oil) instead of paper like modern filters. they're infinitely reusable; just dump out the dirty oil, clean up any remaining dirt, add clean oil, and reassemble. they don't filter very fine particulates very well which is why they fell out of favor.

      The air does a 180 degree turn at the bottom. The dirt can't make the turn and is trapped in the oil.

      The filter media "wicks oil", its covered in oil, which is "sticky" for dirt. I remember the one on the old '49 chevy truck. (Which didnt have the "optional" oil filter), it still ran fine the last time I saw it in '96.

    On the tag axle the contact area on the brake drums looked to have some surface rust. Was that just the lighting the camera got or were they not making contact.

      I think he said it took 1 1/2 turns to get the proper gap on those brakes so I'm guessing they weren't doing the best for stopping.

      It probably does have some surface rust on the drums this coach set for 6.5 years in a yard when I got it back. Been restoring it since I got it back. It’s getting there but it’s like eating an elephant one bite at a time

      @@BusGreaseMonkey .... Harbor freight sells a sun-blocking fabric like they use at garden shops to filter out the sun. What's nice about them is they don't catch water and allow for air circulation, and the wind seldom rips them apart like it does to a tarp. I've used them on pergolas before!

    I have a 1966 MCI5a with DD 871 ENGINE. The engine is getting diesel fuel into the engine oil. Does anyone have a suggestion on where the diesel fuel is finding its way into the oil? Would appreciate your help. Thanks James

      Fuel jumpers. Look under the valve cover and each connection in the fuel line crossovers should have a drip of black oil on them. If one is leaking the oil will be washed away by the leaking fuel. Either loose or cracked fitting

    Curious about engine oil choices. Multi grade diesel-rated oil, particularly full synthetic, exceeds single grade in every SAE test I have ever read. Every characteristic of synthetic oil would strongly advocate for its use in older Diesel engines: extended drain interval, cold temp flow rate, oxidation breakdown resistance etc. Or am I getting something wrong? 3,000 hours on my marine diesel and no problems

      It’s a 2 stroke. The oil required is very specific. Low ash content for one. Less than 1%. Amsol used to make one but not any more. I love synthetics but no one makes one that meets the 2 stroke requirements

      The engine and trans were just put in. I was not sure it had been changed before the two were in this bus. That filter is frame mounted and they clearly didn’t change the trans filter ever

    That air dryer cartridge is way past done. Clean out the air system real good slap a new element in and call it a day

      It's doing what it's supposed to do, and that's remove the oil (and moisture) from the system before it reaches the tanks, valves, bags, brake chambers, etc. Yeah, a new cartridge wouldn't hurt at all, the desiccant in that one is probably loaded and sticky with excess oil. Time to check the compressor, seems it's passing too much oil, time for a rebuild or replacement compressor. But the air dryer is doing what it is supposed to do - remove contaminants like oil and water from the system.
