1968 mci5a vintage bus maintenance. Brake issue and tuneup detroit diesel 8v71

  • Got this 1968 vintage bus all sorted out today. The DD3 brakes had some challenges. Service brakes were great other than some air leaks but the parking brake had some issues. Tune up 4 valve head c60 injectors. Fuel filter issues on generator, rear wheel seal and more. Detroit diesel 8v71 requires a different oil than he had just put in. So we did an oil change too.

    You
    you've won a friend at that O'Reilly store!!......I once had a time at work before I retired where the Avenue C Kiosk I wanted a bottle of Gatorade, the Canteen service tech was working on the self serve check out said just take it and pay for it later!.....later that night I wasnted another so I scanned it 2x.....one of my Companies Sr Managers said "you scanned that 2x!" I told him what happened earlier, he said"wow! someone who's actually honest!"....later he saw me and gave me a $5 cafeteria chip for honesty!

    My two bob’s worth, (two bob meaning in Australia, a pre decimal currency 2 shilling piece, now 20 cents), my comment on the brake rod, obviously needs a new rubber dust cover. Good repairs again, a joy to watch this stuff from my arm chair at home.

    Hi Kelly & Scott + Tyler & Leroy
    All is well here in Kariong near Gosford 50miles from Sydney and 60 miles to Newcastle on the East coast of Australia.
    With your swamp fox the drive mechanism has the rolled pins as a shear off effects so it won't destroy the rest of the drive mechanism.
    We had a Toyota land cruiser with a winch. Someone got sick of replacing the shear pin so they made a hardened stainless pin . When it was overloaded it bent up the ends of the chaise rails .It took some sorting out so we put back a standard one.
    Love your show its the real deal.
    Being brought up in the bush I can relate to a lot of what you have to deal with.
    We lived 50 miles from Coonamble in the central west of NSW So we had to deal with it our selves and make it happen it made you stop and think what to do.
    Regards Tracey & Dave Wallace/walkaboutwally

    So good to see the infamous MCI "Belt of Death" again LOL. I couldn't what you were saying about something up by the squirrel cage blowers, but I am guessing some kind of belt tensioner? Loved the video..great to see the master at work again!

      I think (?!) Scott was saying how the pulley and mechanism for the fans at the top are held up by metal bars that are brazed (welded) in and it can sag? Maybe I got that wrong?

    • @rosymaam68

      2 braces are missing to support the air filters ans specialy the top pulley.

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, he was inferring that over time, the horizontal brace at the bottom has been pulled down from the tension of the "belt of death" and wobbling of same constantly straining it. The whole setup could use some angled bracing from above downward to help maintain the bottom brace up, keeping the pulley up in its proper place and maintaining better tension on the "belt of death". Probably only talking 3/4 - 1" of lift to bring it back up to where the builders intended it to be.

    Where i used to work we had one poor customer come in with his semi and trailer. It came in for brake adjustment on the trailer. It left with new shoes, an S cam, and 2 sevo units and hub seals. It was ok we phoned the customer and gave him the bad news. The servo units didn't have the plastic plugs and the spring in one had got rusty, broke and the spring and punctured its diaphram. The shoes were worn out. The S cam had had 3/8 missing off one of the tips. He was lucky the brakes didn't go over centre on the cam and lock up. Just one of those "She'll be done in a hour jobs" that took a bit longer.

    Been crawling all over my MC8 I bought this past January looking at everything. Wondered why I saw a few threads on the nut that held on the duals. I found some prior owner or a shady mechanic zipped the budd studs on then put both wheels on and then the nut. Crazy. Luke @ US Coach provided me with new wheel hardware. Luckily he is hour and half away.

      Yeah, that fuel system is in serious need of polishing. Scott did mention that the owner needed to put some biocide in the fuel, but still, the dead growth in there (after the biocide kills it) won't just magically disappear. Unfortunately, letting a vehicle sit for extended periods of time, can have undesired results, fuel system problems being one of many.

    Legitimately curious as to your reasoning.

    • @peterrogers9228
      @peterrogers9228 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it is Scott' reasoning; it is what the engines were designed and built for. Multigrade oils are a relatively modern invention and the idea that the thinner the better is even more recent and based partly on the ability to machine to much tighter tolerances.

    • @siaripop7
      @siaripop7 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are lots of engines designed for only non-detergent straight weight oils. Air compressors also tend to only use straight weight oil in the compressor portion! It is best practice to check out what the manufacturer suggests for everything on an engine and then listen to the guys like BGM for their thoughts!

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peterrogers9228 Multigrade oils (such as 15W40) are oils that are supposed to have differing properties. In the case of 15W40, it means that it's supposed to have the properties of a 15-weight oil when it's cold, and a 40-weight oil when it's hot. It's a scientific sort of voodoo that depends on the molecules curling up or straightening out depending on the temperature, causing them to have different properties, flow rates, molecular shape, and behaviours that would be desirable in many other engine builders engines, whereas GM and Detroit Diesel was designed to have (originally 30-weight, then re-specified later on to) 40-weight oil at all times, from stone cold to operating temperatures. With a multigrade oil, starting up a cold engine, theoretically, the oil would only have the properties of a (insert first numerical value of multigrade oil here) oil. This might be helpful if starting your engine in extremely cold climates, but otherwise, GM and Detroit felt that the single-grade thicker oil was just fine whether cold or hot.

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As Scott mentioned, the upper brace that holds the pulley at the top of the belt, has sagged down from tension over the years. When the upper brace was new (and when it gets some helper braces to lift it back up), the belt wouldn't have been so floppity unless the belt was old, worn, stretched out.

    Bus Grease Monkey. How do I get in contact with you? I have a 69 MC7 that needs a little lovin. It’s currently in Oklahoma. Would love to talk to you about replacing a wheel seal and some other items.

      It looks like a Klutch torque multiplier from Northern Tool about 70 dollars when I picked one up.
