  • Where does the time in the day go? Or the week? We're just too busy to keep up with our lawn like we want to, so we're switching from a reel mower to a John Deere 1025R with a 60" mower deck. How does it perform mowing a typical suburban lawn? And how do you operate this thing anyway? We'll cover all that in today's video. How well does a John Deere 1025r (or any subcompact tractor) mow a yard. Stay tuned.

I bought a 1025r in 2013.... It now has 980 hours on it..... I used it to mow, maintain snow, install boulder walls and all the landscaping on a house project. Absolutely without a doubt, the best money I ever spent on anything. That said, this summer I had a opportunity to buy a used z930M Deere, and the cut speed and quality seems to be better from that unit.... But .... it's a 1 trick pony.... All it does is cut grass...Buck for Buck the 1025 is like a swiss army knife. It may not be perfect for everything, but it does a lot of things pretty darn well. With a little bit of a learning curve and sharp blades, the 1025 can do a very nice job of cutting, and the leaf collection systems are great too. All and all, a great and useful tool well worth the investment.

    Hey Courtney:
Bought my 1025R new 6 years ago and with the 54" deck its been my mower for my property. Works as well if not better than any other mower/rider/garden tractor I have ever owned. Wish I could have afforded it earlier. Would have made my life a heck of a lot easier! Thanks for sharing

Got my 2016 1025R without a mower deck. Got the 3 point hitch rotary mower for mowing trails in the woods. I have a Z930A zero turn for the lawn. I know it only does one thing but it does it so good. Thanks for sharing.

I always was worried about the rear quick hitch being too close to the ground so when I got the mower deck set to the level I wanted I simply used the three-point hitch lever to lower it until the mower deck hit the level I wanted and marked the 3-point hitch control so when I am mowing I put the lock lever in place that keeps the 3-point hitch from dropping down any further than necessary. Love your videos! Much better use of my time than watching TV would be!!!

I also have a box blade for it that I use with the loader to do my snow plowing. It gets a work out year around. Wouldn't have anything else. Thanks for the videos my friend.

I have a 1023e, it came with the mid mount mower, after one season of mowing I sold the mid mount deck and bought a 60” Pegasus finishing mower. For my situation it was a very good move and I can remove the mower attachment just as easily as the drive over mid mount. It is also a rear discharge so in dry or windy conditions I don’t have debris blowing back at me.

Recently bought my 1025R with the 54" deck. From an engineering perspective, JD got this one right. It truly is easy off-easy on and even going slowly and deliberately it takes less than 10 minutes. However, as a lawnmower, it has some serious shortcomings unless your lawn is very flat and wide-open. We have many flower beds and mature trees that are hard to work around given the limited turning capability. Also unless you go slow and make wide, gentle turns, even the best turf tires tend to tear up the lawn (even when completely dry). I ended up switching out the deck for a 48" zero-turn mower. The price point of the zero-turn versus the deck, 3rd function hydraulics, mulch kit, and Load 'n go ramps is comparable. Now I get a great cut with no lawn damage. The only downside is having to store another piece of equipment.

I've been thinking about one of these. We have a 455, X748, F1145 and a 855. I think I've had the deck on the 855 once in the past ten years. The F1145 does the bulk of the mowing with all the trim work being done with the 455 and the lawns around the house done with the x748 as it has a bagger on it. We have about 5 acres of cottage style gardens and lawns and another 3 of Australian native gardens and we mow weekly all year round. The 855 is mainly used for placing mulch, small dump trailer work and tilling seasonal flower beds

Thanks for a great video! We have just brought a 17 acre property (near Adelaide in South Australia) and I will end up with about 7-9 acres of lawns to mow and I have been struggling to find a good video on how well these 1025R mow - but now I am satisfied it will do a good job! All I need to do is get approval from my CFO - I hope she is in a good mood 😀

I love mowing with my 2025r. I’d rather mow with a tractor than A zero turn. I can mow and still do stuff around the yard with my tractor. With a zero turn it’ll just sit during the winter. Plus I can plow with my tractor, bush hog and do a lot more than a zero turn. Plus I’m 6”6 so the tractor is comfy to me. Definitely worth the money. Plus we take a loan for our tractor and is almost cheaper than a zero turn with payments. Plus I added attachments to the tractor with the payments. Definitely enjoy these types of tractors

owned a JD1026R since 2013. the drive over deck is great when it is set up properly. When not it is a bear. Many videos on setting it up correctly. The only modification I have done is to bypass the PTO reverse safety switch. I know you can just pull back on the knob, but I would always forget. It is the Swiss Army knife of compact tractors.

Glad others will get a chance to use it; however all your other videos helped a lot as well. I will add... when reversing, hold the PTO override button forward, but you can release after starting to move backward. Also, ROPS up, but be careful of those low branches... can be dangerous the first time as well. Need about a 92 inch clearance.

GWT; I am watching your videos to learn about the 1025R. I am 75 years old, and have 12 acres of land. I have been using a X380 with the 10P cart for moving firewood, topsoil, and rocks. I haul all my tools with the 10P cart. I just purchased a 1025R and it will be delivered tomorrow. Got a D120 loader, and a 54 inch mower deck, and the versa turf tires. I have already ordered the heavy tooth bars, rear receiver hitch plate, 3in1 tow hitch, and the Speeco cat 1 quick hitch in the back. Plan to order the dethatcher to drag in the woods to make trails. I am a novice, so will a bit nervous with connecting and disconnecting the mower deck, and the loader. cant wait to see what you put on your 1025R for the leaves in the fall. Too old now to lift heavy rocks and wood! Thanks for all the information you give us in the videos!

I have a 2018 1025r, and about 5 acres of lawn to mow. It’s probably not the best mower for the job, but it gets it done, and I can still move firewood, dirt etc. It does get tricky around trees and other obstacles and I have to go back with a push mower in those areas. I live in the country so I don’t need to have a perfectly manicured lawn.

Watching you fighting the trees along your tree line reminded me of every time I mow. I have 5 1/2 acres in Indiana. I mow with a zero turn and battle trees every time. My wife always ask why I have long sleeves on in July -- because I get murdered by low hanging trees :)

I now do most of my mowing with a 2520/62D2 deck; it does as nice a mowing job as my X748/54C setup did. But, it's about 30 minutes faster for the 5-1/2 acres I mow.

I have a 2017 1025R and I use that to mow with all the time... I think for a sub compact utility tractor, it mows pretty good. Keep in mind it is a tractor, NOT a professional MOWING MACHINE. I also use the tractor many other things too, so it is very handy that I can drive over and take the mower deck on and off in a matter of seconds! Plus with taking the Mower Deck on and off so fast, it entices me to want to clean and maintain the mower deck too. I love using it to mow the ditches, on the very steep ditches I put it in low and 4x4 and it walks right up out of it. It is a great investment, probably the best one I have ever made.

I like to think of my 1025r as a Leatherman/Swiss army knife.
It doesn't mow as easily as a zero turn but it's plenty good enough for most homeowners.
The loader isn't as good as a skid steer but it's still plenty good enough for most homeowners.
It isn't the best at anything, but it can do everything.
    You get the point.

I have a ZTR mower for mowing my grass. I have mowed my lawn with a tractor and currently have a 3 point hitch mower as a back up for my ZTR and we have a fair amount of grass and sometime have my wife on the ZTR mower and me on the tractor. A mid mount mower makes mowing much easier with your tractor than the 3 point hitch mower. You can mow closer with the mid mount and don’t have to worry about that “rear swing”. It is easier to mow under low hanging branches and shrubs with the 3 point mower. My ZTR does do a little better job at cutting the grass (the finished look) than my 3 point hitch mower.

Kioti CX2510 with 60” fabricated (not stamped) drive over deck.
Pros. Commercial grade fabricated deck. Quick and easy install and removal, and similar in cost, if not cheaper, to JD. Several cut height adjustments (by pin placement). Operator driven clutch PTO for soft implement engagement. No reverse cutout when operating PTO and backing up. Actual suspension seat standard.
Cons. Turning radius is not nearly as tight as smaller BX and 1 series JD’s. Tractor is heavier and will leave tire impressions in softer soils, especially when wet. Not as widely available as other brands.

I have the 1026R with the 54" Auto Connect Deck and used it one season. I went back to my 445 and 54" deck as the cab on the 1026R would not let me trim under the trees as well as I could with the 445. Deck on the 1026R did a good job, my yard is just not as easy to use it on. It does take about 4-6 hours to mow the property all in one day, so a big job in my opinion.

@@GoodWorksTractors It is an old farm where 11 1/2 acres were carved out for us. I have a couple of fields I use the brush cutter on every couple of years, but the field in front, side and back of the house are mower with the 445 to keep the trees and brush from taking over. If I don't mow at least every 2-3 weeks, you can see new saplings growing. When we got the property, we planted over 150 Spruce and Red Pines for a wind brake and small forest so it takes time to mow around them. We are located almost 1/10 mile from the road and that makes for a large front yard with a lot of trees. About a 1/4 part of the land is a Cedar Swamp with good hunting for our family members.

If you have an auto-connect deck, check the stop bolt that sets the height of the PTO coupler the first time you take it off. There are two nuts that that clamp on the coupler that set the height to mate to the gearbox of the deck. One of the nuts vibrated off, and the bolt fell out. When I went to remove the deck, the coupler swung fully down and tore the the spring loaded lock lever (silver bar) off of the deck as I backed up to remove it. It was in 2018, my dealer gave me a replacement under warranty. They said I wasn't the only one with that problem, the design seems flimsy, but I added Loctite to the new assembly and it's been fine since then.

My Grandpa just recently bought a brand new '21 X738. Originally he was gonna go with an X730 because he was coming from a '95 445 and had always had 2wd. I talked him into the 4x4 for the winter (Were up by Lansing). I wish we would've done a bit more research cuz I think the 1025r would've been the best buy. Granted he has just under an acre so even the X738 is overkill, but with how close they are in price you may as well go for the sub compact. With a 54in deck and 47in 2 stage blower he was at $17,000 for the X738. On another note, really appreciate all these informative videos, and since Kalamazoo is pretty close, you'll be my first stop if my 445 ever gets to be not enough tractor.

got my 1026r(european model) new one year ago with the 60 inch deck and indipendent hydraulic lift. The lift is incredibly handy because the deck lifts real easy and fast. But it's not all perfect, because the lift cilinder is one way (it only lifts, then the weight of the deck and gravity pull it down when you use the scv), it takes up one scv and every once in a while you gotta lift it up (in transport) because the cilinder eventually droops down. It also does not have a "Travel position" but it still has a ll the diffrent positions fot cut height.

I know your attorney requires you to stress safety (hence the repeated "read your manual"), but with all the low tree limbs and swing set that you have, that ROPS bar would find itself leaning against the wall in my garage. I cut commercially for 22 years and that's the first thing I did after I got my Ferris zero turn home. That thing had such a low center of gravity that it would slide sideways on slopes long before tipping over.

I bought a Kubota B2601 in early 2020, and got the belly mower to go with it, figuring it would be good for large, unobstructed level areas and a small zero-turn mower would deal with various tight spaces, hillsides, and lawn-like areas.
In practice... well, had I known then what I know now (including a large expansion of the yard), I would have gone for a one-size-larger zero-turn and most likely a compact flail mower instead of the belly mower (maybe also a size-larger tractor without the mid PTO). The reality is that I do nearly all the mowing with the zero-turn, and a side-discharge rotary mower is not the right tool for dealing with tall stuff, especially Johnson grass; when I want to add a new walking path, the sensible approach is to wait until the hay guy comes through and then, while the grass is short, start maintaining the new path.
Then there's the nuisance of the mower deck and any 3-point attachment being pretty much mutually exclusive, leading to more reconfiguration operations than I'd like, and the dismounted mower deck needing to be stored somewhere flat when flat surfaces are in short supply here.
The other coming-this-winter complication is that the B2601's mower deck isn't really meant to work with wheel spacers, so when I finally get around to widening the tractor's footprint I'll have to do something about the rear anti-scalp rollers.
Overall, I'd say that for my situation the mower deck wasn't the right answer. For other people, it might well be.

I noticed a lot of reviews on those tractors is when people cut with it they do the lines like a zero turn. Don’t do the lines. Outline your area and do the outside in a circular motion going inward and shoot the shavings outward. Save you a lot of backing up and going forward. That’s where zero turns have this beat but not everyone, like me, cares for the lines.

Man that tractor has seen better days, i noticed the dash has a yellow-ish color like it's been sitting outside for a while. About the hydraulic lift option for the mower, you can get it as an independant 3rd mid-mount scv or use the loader scv already installed. there's kit for both but it depends on the year of the tractor, if it's tlb, cab or no cab etc so it's easy to order the wrong kit if you're not buying from a dealer.

I bought a 1025R new in 2015 and I now have 357.4 hours on it. I had a worthless Cub Cadet 46" mower and when I found out about the 60" MMM I got rid of the Cub ASAP. The Cub was probably the worst mechanical thing I've ever purchased. The MMM and 1025R are a great combination for me. I cut about 10 acres of which maybe 3 is "lawn" and I use the MMM. It is a wonderful piece of equipment and works well. I added the "load and go" ramps to mine and now it's amazing how fast I can do blade or other maintenance to it. My Frontier 48" rotary cutter works just as well on the other fields with constant volunteer trees and larger foliage growing up. My only complaint with the 1025R is the location of the light switch and the key. Whenever I turn around to hook up any rear attachment my knees hit these and I have bent my key where it won't come out and have mispositioned the light switch. Minor issues for such a great tractor.

Jared Haase if you got all open areas you'd be fine. But if you got trees shrubs, etc a zero turn with a 60" deck is faster if you're keeping up with the mowing and not letting it get to tall. The 1025r goes thru heavier grass than most zero turns better. When I got my zero turn I was finished mowing on 2 acres 1 hr 45 min and a riding mower w a 54" deck took almost 2.5 hrs. I've got a Country Clipper w 52" deck made in Iowa. Steers with a joystick, 1 hand. Plus if you got a tractor like the 1025r you'll have to keep your trees trimmed taller to get in close to the base of the trees as you'll be sitting up taller. Zero turns also help in cutting down on your weedeating time, which being 65 , heart patient I can't do alot of physical work.

Much better than a 20" walk behind/push mower. LOL Try using a 20" walk behind/push mower to mow 3.5 acres it takes me close to 7 to 10 days depending on the weather and how sore I am the next day. LOL Why do I not use a tractor? I would use the tractor my nephew left me, but the darn thing does not keep the battery charged, and I just put a new battery in it. I might not be running it at full throttle. The hood fell off when I went to change the battery. LOL Yup it is a piece of junk. I do not have the money to get a New Tractor or believe me I Would!!! In reference to the comment made at 17:00, that may be the case but there’s no option of 4ws after you leave the X series and go up to a 1 series or bigger and that’s such a critical thing for mowing in tighter more confined spaces over 2ws and as someone who has owned an X324 for 15 years with 4ws it’s going backwards going back to a 2ws system especially when it’s a much bigger machine so my next machine will be an X754 sometime this year maybe mid year sometime maybe

A good entry level pro model zero turn can be had for around 5k new. Bit more than a mower deck, but faster and can leave the tractor for tractor stuff

  • @Slider68
    @Slider68 2 ปีที่แล้ว

We've been "planning" to buy a subcompact tractor for many years. 3 months ago our 15 year old lawn tractor's engine punched a hole in its block (actually the block somehow split in two along the parting line; apparently a common issue with twin cylinder 26hp Briggs and Stratton engines) and the hot oil hitting the exhaust quickly caught on fire. The lawn tractor was quickly destroyed as a result and we decided to replace it with a ~54" zero turn mower.
We never intended to mow with a subcompact tractor but couldn't find a decent zero turn so we moved up our plans on the subcompact and also bought an inexpensive used 54" mower deck for our "new to us" 1025R TLB.
The 1025R mows roughly as well as the old lawn tractor. The main différences are:
    - The 1025R provides and extremely smooth, isolated, comfortable ride compared to the lawn tractor.
    - The lack of a front center anti-scalping wheel/roller on the 1025R is annoying in some areas and results in the mower blades cutting right down to the ground in some areas. Some of our lawn has a curve to it, such as along the edge of our driveway, so I really need to find a way to weld on or bolt on a front center anti-scalping roller.
    - Another frustrating issue with the 1025R is every time I want to back up while mowing, I have to press a button to keep the mower on. With the Husqvarna there was a special key position that allowed mowing in reverse without issue.
    - Overall the 1025R does a good job mowing our ~3 acres. Both it and the lawn tractor took between 4 and 6 hours to get it all done. Both had/have about the same HP (25hp or 26hp) and both bog down in very tall thick grass. The lawn is in littered with elevation changes, trees, bushes, low hanging branches, etc so it takes a long time to mow well.
Our plan is to eventually buy a zero turn but for now we're happy enough with the 1025R.
Right now my main focus is buying subcompact accessories like a grapple, 3rd (and possibly 4th for a rear) function hydraulic, add on tow/lift hooks, bucket cutting edge, rear tow bar or 2" receiver, rear blade with power tilt, offset rear mower, etc....

A few years back I had purchased a 72” mower deck for my John Deere 2720. In a straight line I could cut through a lot of grass. However, I lost all the time saving when it came to turns, tight spots, mowing the perimeter, and obstacles. Also, the weight of the machine compacted the soil, grass, and put ruts in the lawn if the soil was wet. Tree limbs also become problematic since the 2 series sits so high.
I sold the 2720 and bought a 2038R and Z950M with mulch-on-demand. A zero turn mower is leaps and bounds more efficient and the cut quality is noticeably better. Also, the hassle of not having to remove, store, and reattach the deck on a tractor is well worth the extra $ to have a dedicated zero turn mower.

I had thought about getting a 1025r with a mower - but the cost of the mower attachment plus the pain of taking it on and off between projects makes it make no sense. Can easily pick up a ride on mower for a similar price of just this deck that won't be putting several thousand pounds of weight all over your lawn - definitely a concern if you have a septic system. If you have storage limitations then it makes sense, or if you are just wary of not wanting to maintain 2 machines, but outside of that I think these decks rarely make sense.

I just got a 1023e TLB, my first tractor this year. It's been great for all the projects I have and didn't know I would have, haha! I mow with an old JD SST16 that has about 600 hours on it. It's a dangerous machine and they probably stopped making it for a reason. It's a zero turn but has the typical tractor form factor. I live in PA and it is quite hilly. If you are on the right angle the front of it will drift down hill since there is no mechanical linkage between the front wheels and the steering wheel. When it dies I've got to decide on a deck for the 1023e or a separate JD mower. How does the 1023/1025 do mowing on hills?

Compared to my old wheel horse (which i still use time to time), I mow with a lot less gas and with Pat's quick hitch I have the mower deck on and off in 5 minutes changing implements. I really like the rear mount although it takes a bit getting used to coming from the mid mount.

Seems to be 2 schools of thought on this issue. Guess it's just a matter of opinion; that and what your land is like. I am one of those that mows with the 1025R. Perhaps I am lazy but I would rather just have one machine to maintain and change oil, hydraulic fluid etc. I run it year round. If you feel differently that's cool.
As far as advice to a novice with this tractor goes, when I set the mower deck level I slowly lower the rocker arm watching the deck. When it stops moving I set the stop on the 3 point rocker arm control so it cannot go any lower. This stops my 3-pt arms with quick hitch from digging in on low spots when backing up.

I realize your channel is good works tractors, but a Kubota dealer pointed out to me when I was first starting to look at Kubota and John Deere subcompact and compact tractors that for what you're paying with these auto decks, you would come really close to buying a used or new lowering zero turn radius mower and you're going to get done a lot faster and most likely have a better cut. I think it would be fun to see a comparison between the two on your yard. I've seen some comparisons and it looks like the zero turn gets the job done about 40% faster, but I wasn't sure if they were stacking the deck. No pun intended! Lol lol

    • @GoodWorksTractors
      @GoodWorksTractors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Haha, well I think that depends on the type of zero turn you are buying. The Toro TimeCutter 42" I had years and years ago had an engine failure at around 250 hours. It was basically a throw away. I make that point to say that I would want to invest in a more costly zero turn that wasn't a big box store model which would take much longer to get payback. Plus, with a tractor, you only have one engine to maintain, less storage space, etc. However, I could make a strong case for and against it. I'm just playing one side of the coin right now.
I was moving pretty good on this 1025r and really any tractor I've mowed with in the past. I've mowed this yard with zero turns, garden tractors, subcompacts, and fairway mowers. I would guess I have less than a 10-15% in time difference from the slowest to fastest mow.

In the early eighties I started off with a Craftsman 42" tractor man was I stylin. Would maintain about a half acre in those days of a 7.5 acre property. Then in 2007 graduated to a Kubota 54" WOW what a big jump up. The Zero turn is absolutely amazing if you have may trees to trim around. This zero turn was designed to mow grass at up to 9 miles per hour as was shown on a TV commercial years ago. In grass cutting terms that is like flying at fighter jet speed while cutting. I pull a grass catching Vacuum trailer behind the zero turn. It is pinned on solid so the whole trailer swings on castor wheels so I can swing around trees. It is called a cyclone rake. I recommend you do your research to see what best suits your needs. Today I have a Kubota F3990 that cuts 7 acres in 2.5 hours with seat belt on and flying. Zero Turn mowers are as much as 50% faster at cutting than a conventional tractor. As the John Deere site says " it isn,t just how fast you mow, it,s how well you mow fast"

If you actually need to use the attachments then the 1025 is the way to go but the x700 series mows, plows and blows much better.

Hi, I am new in the market shopping for a versatile, small tractor and I found your channel. Thank you! I’m looking to use this tractor for both mowing my Bermuda yard at my house and then trembling down onto my pasture property for mowing. Your yard looks really nice and so my question is can I do a good job with mowing on my fairly flat Bermuda yard with a 54 inch deck and a following question is do I need the turf tires or can I get by on my yard with the industrial tires without much damage to my ground? It looks like you’re doing pretty well on the industrial tires. Thank you so much.

Hint: There’s no reason to have the three point hitch all the way down especially if you have something like the Versa Hitch installed. Before mowing slowly lower your mower deck until it stops then push the three point hitch control just a small bit further then adjust your stop lever so that’s as far as it will go each time you raise then lower your deck. This way your three point hitch arms are never lower than they need to be.

Nice video. Where is your 1025 with the Versa Turf dualies? Out at your property now? How did the R4's do on your lawn?

Don't have to hold the pto reverse...just engage it then hit the reverse pedal and you can let go. It'll run mid pto until you let off reverse then try reverse again.

I bought my 1025R new in 2016. It now has 400 hours on it. I knew I needed something more than just a mower. I knew I was going to need a loader and backhoe. With the backhoe being an extra $6000, it took a little while to convince the wife about it. Eventually she agreed and 3 months later we planted some trees, of which the backhoe made quick work of. We were done on 1 hour that would have taken all day with a shovel. I said to the wife, "Aren't cha glad we got the backhoe?" To which she replied, "Oh SHUT UP!" Anyway back to mowing. It only takes me 2 1/2 hours to mow 4 acres, when it takes my neighbor that long just to mow 2.
