    Ever see a great deal on a flight to Europe or New York or Las Vegas, but you never actually could get that price on the ticket you bought? Here we go over some of the main reasons why travelers, tourists and vacationers seem to never get the cheap tickets that airlines seem to offer.

    As a solo budget traveler who just wants to see the world, I always try to get the dirt cheap tickets. They help me see more of the world for less money. Yes, there are compromises, but I don't have an excess of funds...only an excess of wanderlust, haha.

      I have been from NC to FL many times on Alligaint for around $40 each way, so far its been good experience and other than normal charges the price was what was quoted. I have also flew to Europe on average priced tickets and when comparing the two experiences they are the same...(except longer flight time)

      KeepinIt350 This always seemed like a good reason to deal with travel agents. If you have total flexibility, just ask an agent where what and when their cheapest ticket to whatever continent, is. Generally they have some access to deals, one-offs and insights. If that costs me $50 for them to spend 30 minutes to set me up...hey I guess I’m going to this weird city over here, should be cool. :)

    Reason #3 is now illegal in Canada. By law all flights departing from here must be advertised with all incidental costs included (taxes, airport fees, yaddi-yaddi-yah).

      GOOD. I wish more regulations would be inputed requiring all fees to be included in the price or either CLEARLY advertised along with the fare.

    I don't know how many people have seen the ad where the little girl is selling lemonade: her sign says $1.00, then she tells a guy it is $2.37 because of fees, and starts naming the fees. It is TRUE! I encounter this kind of thing all the time. My utility bill has 6 different fees on it which apply whether you use a single watt of electricity or a single drop of water. And don't even get me started on hospital bills. AMERICA, the land of the fee! Sorry for hijacking this travel thread, but just watch for fees in hotels, even taxis in some places.

    I paied just under $1,500 for round trip airplane tickets from Detroit to Rome and back (booked directly with the airline). My travel times are never flexible. I have to request time off from work and then I just buy airplne tickets for the days I requested off at whatever price they cost.

    • @woltersworld
      @woltersworld  7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +lyutsin21 that's basically how we end up too. That's why i shake my head when people say I got ripped off on flight tickets. I had a specific schedule and I am ok with the price so for me it's fine. I can't take a week off starting tomorrow because of some ticket deal.

    • @jessywanders8829

      @markgould1322 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Pidalin I sympathize. However, I am self employed and I can make practically any schedule work as long as I can plan it out in advance. All I can say is that there are trade-offs that come with any job or position. I trade the benefits that most people who work for a corporation take for granted. Fortunately, for many years my wife worked for a governmental entity and now that she has retired, we continue to receive health insurance and a retirement package. I am not directing this at you, but whenever someone takes a job they need to be acutely aware of the trade offs involved. I love travel and I would be unhappy in a job where I had difficulty taking time off.

    When you see it, keep that window open when you check prices on other sites. Many sites like booking.com and other comparison sites have systems that download a cookie to your computer. They recognise the second time you visit their site (your ip address). The site knows what you looked for and that you are interested. The system automatically adds a % to the price.
    Being a single traveler is the easiest way to find a cheap flight. The bigger the group the harder it is to get a discount.

    We're cruising out of Vancouver to LA. We have a regional airport that we fly out from. When I was trying to find a good priced fare, the only way I could do it was to fly into Seattle and take a train to Vancouver. By going this way, it was $420 versus $670. That adds up with 5 tickets! I hear the train ride is beautiful, so we are really looking forward to it. It just goes to prove that there's always a better way if you look hard enough.

    Best thing about travelling solo is not needing any of the little extras like checked bags or seat selection or on board food or ticket printing (doesn't everyone just use their phone as an eticket anyway?) as you only have to cater for yourself! It must be at least 10 times more planning to get your whole family in the air!! We decided to ignore this advice when we planned our European trip. Our flight from Paris to London on a budget airline was supposed to leave at 8:00 pm but was delayed until 2:00 am. It was a good thing we didn't book train tickets though. They were on strike.

    Hi Mark
    We have a wedding in Portugal next year in June, I'm thinking we can fly NY-Rome and then catch a plane to Porto. Tickets are pretty cheap with Norwegian it seems. My problem is the trip Porto-NYC, I had seen it with TAP a straight flight for $220 and I didn't book it because it was so early and I didn't think it would go down but never thought it would go up to 400!! All of a sudden. So now I don't know what to do. Do you think that it's too early to book for June? There aren't many options Porto-NY.. looks like with Iberia a one way is about $2K! It's very frustrating! Thanks

I was hearing ppl getting ticket for around 500$. But couldn’t find any for this trip that low. Can’t wait to get back out there tho!!😊

    My best advice is a package deal- flight + car rental or train pass or flight+hotel, even if the hotel is for 3 days of a 2 week trip, the package deal is usually the price of a stand alone ticket. The only caveat is you usually don't know the airline until you purchase, or how many layovers. Ive been burnt one time that way, stopping in every city in central America thinking it was a direct flight to Panama City.

  • @joeschroeder

    nice video, the key is to research every detail before you even book, how much transportation costs from the airport, would it be worth it to rent a car? does public transportation go where WE want to go? does the hotel charge for parking? whenever I travel, i do so much research that I know exactly how much ill be spending (for the most part) there's so much information on the internet and alot of people don't take advantage of it. unfortunately I don't have enough vacation time to travel the world much, but I drive to check out different places in America as much as possible. a far as hotels, if you're not too picky, I would HIGHLY advise anyone to try hotwire, or pricelines "Express deals" they don't tell you the name of the hotel UNTIL you pay, and its non refundable. but they tell you the amenities (free breakfast, free parking etc.) star rating, and even guest review ratings, as well as exact location. Alot of times with a little research you can narrow it down, and figure out exactly what hotel it is before you book.... I've gotten 4-5 star hotels for under $50 a night. I swear by it, ive been using them for years and have never even ONCE been disappointed in the hotel

    Some of the crazy frustrating things are the taxes and fees airlines will charge when you're trying to purchase a ticket with frequent flier miles!

    • @woltersworld
      @woltersworld  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    • @tosht2515
      @tosht2515 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Wolters World $370? I use Delta miles quite often and my last three "free" flights with return were $91 to Mexico City, $101 to Bangkok and $109 to Sydney per ticket. I would probably pass using my miles for $370! Yikes!

    • @Kevin_Finch
      @Kevin_Finch 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It gets frustrating with domestic flights on some airlines. A ticket for 40,000 miles that would have cost like $300 still has $100 in taxes and fees after using those 40,000 miles. So essentially those 40,000 miles are only worth $150-$200. I've never had enough miles to purchase an international ticket so I can't speak to that.

    As someone who has booked the hotels and tickets for Barcelona and Rome for this coming September, I just kind of figured the price of flights is just the price and not going to stress too much about it. When traveling domestically and not on a tight schedule, that's different as I always have the option of driving. But abroad, limited time, fixed two week schedule, the price of travel is just the price.

Some people have given up using them for that They also have many add ons like you say.

You can print tickets, or you can just take a passport and show up at the airport, all your data is in the system.

    Best way to fly is to get premium economy seats for extra leg room and be at the beginning of economy cabins. You are also allowed to board early. Then pay for the use of business class airport rest areas while on a 2-3 hour connection. Free food, free booze, comfy places to rest or use their computers, free showers, and best of all no insane crowds. I am taking to you, London Heathrow. 😄

    I know everyone hates Spirit Airlines, but in off-peak times with miles you can get dirt cheap tickets. But Spirit is only good for short flights. For example Detroit to Orlando is about 2 and a half hours so I don't mind not having much leg room, or no WiFi. Basically, if you re going on a long flight, I wouldn't recommend cheeping out. You just get what you pay for so

    Regarding what you said at 6:40 I was under the impression that airlines must seat you next to your children . I can't envision any flight crew allowing a 4 year old to be seated next to strangers while their parents are in a different row.
