www.audioholics.com - How To Increase Dynamic Range of your Home Theater System: Dynamic range is the ratio of maximum system output to the noise floor. The dynamic range of human hearing from loudest to softest sound we can perceive is about 120dB. In reality our home theater systems typically don't approach anywhere near this level due to extreme output requirements from the loudspeakers and the noise floor of the room being too high. In addition, our ears wouldn't be able to sustain such swings in output without causing irreparable hearing loss. But does this mean we shouldn't do everything in our power to maximize the dynamic range of our home theater system? Certainly NOT. The more you improve upon this ratio, the better sounding your system will be since it would not have to work as hard for you to hear the loudest and softest musical passages with absolute clarity. All very good points guys.
Your dynamic points made me recall my favorite sub demo that I ever experienced, the Paradigm servo 15 when you mentioned bass management with respects to dynamic sound. At the start of the demo I thought it wasn't even on, and out of no where it would hit hard, low and fast, then suddenly silent again until called upon again to strike next.

Side note, you should also mention the possible issues with TOO MUCH dynamic range. I have Klipsch and while I love them, they have ruined my couches. Every listening position has a stain from when guests are watching movies, as I tune the volume to comfortable common dialogue levels. When the shit hits the fan during action scenes, it also hits my couches. Klipsch are extremely sensitive, and extreme sensitivity can leave you diving for your remote when the action kicks in!

Your comparison between 86 Db and 92 Db is by coincidence very useful to me. I am getting a pair of Magnepan 0.7 main speakers and replacing a pair of GR Research OB7 speakers. When I auditioned the Magnepan speakers they outclassed a pair of speakers demonstrated in an audio seminar that cost over $50,000. They outclass the OB7's. I had been running the OB7's with a 245 single ended triode amplifier which puts out at most a1.5 Watts and they are more than loud enough. The OB7's are 92 Db and the Magnepans are 86 Db sensitivity. I plan to run the Magnepans with a single ended triode amplifier using an 833-A radio station transmitting triode at 1000 Volts and I think it safe to conclude it will put out more than 6 Watts (4X1.5). The speakers are only about 5 to 6 feet away from the two theater seats and the house is small. I will let you know how it works in a few weeks when I finish saving up the rest of the cost of the Magnepans.

Great video...my friend and I were just talking about the air conditioner running and not hearing the effects. When I turn off the A/C it made a big difference. I have 6.1 setup. Have Denon avr 1912. For the front's I have Polk Audio RT55I and the center it's Polk CS305. The rears are Polk FXi500 and for the rear center I have CSI3 and the sub is a PSW505. I like Polk.

I bought mid range 5.1 system but for the last 6 months i have used the setup in factory default... BIG MISTAKE... i followed your 5.1 setup walkthrough video and no lie, measured to the inch, set levels correctly and it literally sounds like i have a different system. I actually feel like im fully immersed. making the most of the yamaha receiver and mission speakers has been wasted for the first 6 months. Im now going to rewatch all the movies again 👍 Thankyou for your amazing videos.

hey guys, love the channel thank you for all you do. Right now I have a Denon 1911, Polk Monitor 70s up front, CS2 center and Monitor 30s for surrounds and back. Trying to get more volume out of the system. Would it be wise to look into an ext amp (possibly even a newer more powerful AVR like the Denon x4100) or new speakers? Oh and for bass, running 2x Polk 505s (guess I like Polk lol).
I live in south FL and have a 'great room' where the kitchen and family room connect, 12ft ceilings, and tile floor (ugh). The main area is 15x15 and total area of the room is more like 30x15.

It is funny how often you score a direct correlation to the issues I face. My son and I just watched the latest Star Wars last night for the first time since seeing it in IMAX. My son cranked up the A/C unit prior to watching to at least delay the unit kicking in. We only went 2 degrees but next time we will go 3 degrees. The fan is the real problem but it doesn't help that the compressor sits right out side the window of our theatre room. Also I recently added a second sub. I have Emotiva and B&K 200 watts into 91db KEFs so I am pretty good on that front as well. I am now going to watch speaker placement link to see how I am doing there.Thanks for all of your insight.
What are your thoughts on upgrading the capacitors in a speakers crossover network? For people that are handy with a soldering iron that is.
Step 6: source material is directly related to dynamic range. Remember It's the recording not the format. Just because it's "high rez", "DSD", HD Master or True HD does NOT mean it's a quality recording. Happy listening my friends.

so true. I've found some really awful recordings with the worst dynamics. Sadly they were all my teen years tunes. I'm not even sure who to write that mean email to.
So true, I've been hearing so many FLAC files sounding exactly the same or even worse than 320Kbps MP3 files and therefore take more space on my DAP or computer for nothing. It's how well it was recorded in the studio that really makes a difference so I don't go into these "High rez bs stuff" anymore that cost a lot more than regular albums.

Very nice video. Can you please advise me what settings should I choose to listen background sounds clearly (wind, water, birds i.e high frequency sounds) in movies. Sometimes background music suppresses the background natural sounds. Your reply is highly appreciable.

Hello (again:-)), when I want this AV receiver unit as hub/integrator for more AV sources and most important for me is THE unifying function of properly upscalled video AND MOSTLY properly compressed(!) audio dynamics, to be comfortable well even during watching DVDs at evenings (not too loud explosions and not too quiet speech - simply as HOME is NOT a THEATER ... especially at midnights) .... so, is there something you can tell about AV manufacturers, how they handle proper adjustable audio dynamics compression during LOW power listening ?? tnx

i have a pioneer AV receiver ( sc-lx89 ) and i did the auto mcacc calibration. After a year i listening i found sometimes the sound to harsh, but i never giving mutch thought about it. Then one day i was looking around my settings and i thought maybe i have to turn of EQ that the receiver automatic calibrated, and i find the sound mutch fuller now

Auto calibration is not perfect always. You should rely on your ears.
My system is setup in my basement. So when the furnace or AC kicks on its an issue. I'm gonna eventually try one of those sound blocking blankets to see how it works .

For A/C noise reduction, look into a mini-split. They are very quiet and efficient - a perfect system for a home theater.

Thanks for the video guys! I really can't see needing more than my current 45 watt per channel H/K AVR-5. It weighs a solid 24 pounds unlike these modern amplifiers that claim somewhere around a 125W/C and only weigh 10lbs!
Paired with my Klipsch's I can easily hit 110dBa (with a 40dBa noise floor) without maxing out the H/K ;) but I fear for when the caps go bad in my receiver, as many of these new ones don't seem to be of the same quality to deserve replacing it!
Your HK is a nice AVR and you should enjoy many years with it.
carlos oliveira Good point regarding the type of amplifier used, however I'm fairly certain the ones I referenced are class A/B, as is my receiver.
Believe it or not, the speakers are budget Klipsch Synergy F-30 towers, which I find more solid for the price every day (I got the pair for less than $350 USD). The room is my bedroom, so it's small, around 11' x 14', and I was in my listening position, around 5-6' away from each speaker.
I was too scared to push the extra 15dB on the amp, assuming it was clip at some point, so I decided knowing I had 110dB+ headroom was good enough and turned it back down after the song.
No I wasn't using it for calibration purposes, I was cranking them for the heck of it tbh! I went by the rule of thumb that of the audio is undistorted, both the speakers and amplifier are doing fine, but I myself couldn't push it much louder, as I was already weary of the stress I was putting on my own ears.

What is the noise floor impact when using Balanced XLR cables (found on higher end components) vs. standard Unbalanced RCA cables?
0 -- XLR are found on professional equipment to limit cross talk on long cable runs. Keep your RCA's to 3' or less and buy the good ones -- about $12 at Best Buy and you will not hear any difference.
I got two SVS PB 2000 subs and I want more bass. Should I buy 2 more or buy one PB 13 Ultra? Should I buy two small subs or one big sub? If I have one big sub and two smaller subs, will I hear the big sub more so over the smaller subs?
What would be a safe average and max spl db level for movie watching? I recently got reference Premier line from klipsch and the SB3000 and I love how great it sounds but I do feel a little bother in my ears the next day so I was obviously watching too loudly. I downloaded 3 different spl apps on my phone and I watched transformers in 4k last night. I tried to watch as low volume as I could and sum still enjoy it. I averaged about 68-74 db and maxed at 85 on a couple low frequency bass scenes. I know the apps aren't the most accurate but I just wanted an idea. How are those levels? Too high, too low or just right? What do you watch at?
Just right, I normally watch at -20 db ( 65 constant and 85 peak). For me more than -10 db is too loud. To don't affect your ears it seems that you can expose them in a day for 8 hours at 85 db, 4 88 db, 2 91....
On the dual subwoofer setup, How critical is it to have like matching subs?
It's not critical but it makes it easier to integrate if they have similar output and tuning characteristics.
i have a question regarding point 4: what are the advantages of using lower sensitivity speakers? why do speakers company choose to make 86 db speakers and not 91-92, what is the reason of this? thank you!
There are several reasons for different sensitivity levels of speakers. A lot depends on the drivers used, driver topology, how much cone area, etc. Horns are typically higher sensitive drivers but many people prefer the sound of domes and cones. I'd suggest very high sensitive speakers if you've got loud listening habits, large room, and limited power on top otherwise chose what speakers sound best to fit your needs.

Yes if you want max dynamic range in your playback material. For late night viewing, you may want to use the compression features however.
Yes AVS is getting some $$$ form Dolby to sponsor those marketing videos. If Dolby would have just come out and say Atmos-enabled speakers are a compromise and last resort for those that can't do discrete speakers it wouldn't be so bad. Instead they are marketing it like its a "new speaker technology" that is the "greatest breakthrough in 20 years" and is a "preferred" solution to discrete mounted speakers. So sad.
I think you have got the interpretation of equal loudness curve wrong. Human need more loudness at bass frequency compared to mid frequencies to perceive equal loudness.

Flat or as little boost as possible is usually the best way to go, especially if you're using a powered subwoofer.
However, some program material requires a little boost. In those cases, tone controls can be useful.
How about in a case where the speakers are behind a screen that is not perforated and therefore not acoustically transparent. Do you recommend boosting the treble a little to compensate for high frequency loss ??
Sure, but I'd measure before/after to see what he real losses are. Usually you can get by with a little boost around 7kHz and 15kHz to compensate.

Then there is the age old trick of "see how loud my speakers are!!!!" start with quiet music at very low levels -- maybe some early Mary Black. Get them seated, comfortable, let them get accustom to the quiet room -- then, Van Halen Running with the Devil at about 60% max power. They will swear that you have the loudest system in the entire city...
I prefer listening to DTS Neural:X, it really does improve soundtracks.
Dolby Surround is better, more natural sounding and better at placing ambient sounds.

Not sure if you're serious or trolling.
1. Front tweeters at ear level.
2. Rear speakers a little above ear level (can make it a little harder to distinctly locate the speaker).
3. Don't go with Dolby Atmos at all.

your comments on hearing loss brings up a question. i think there is too much emphasis on ruler flat equalization. as a senior with some hearing loss i find the need to tweek my speakers to my liking. i think the subject merits some discussion.
What? your voice is muffled and quiet -- talk louder please. 16 years of flying in a prop plane has absolutely ruined my left ear. You are absolutely correct. I look at where I have my EQ set to pictures I have of it in college in the 70's and 80's -- man 400 to 3000 hz -- gone...
How do you manage people who complain and nag you about your speakers and because they can barely hear your subwoofer and speakers but for some reason it bothers them anyway?

7. Buy a separate stereo DAC ($200 minimum) for music listening on your home-theater system, it's gonna be a night and day upgrade over any DAC included in a $200 to $2500 receiver. The included DAC in the receiver (almost any receiver) is pure crap but it does a great job on movies where you want your house shaking and nothing more.
This is nonsense. All semi decent DAC's for the last 20 years have pretty much identical output quality. It's just marketing for gullible people. Same as hi-def audio.
Well, all receivers form Denon/Marantz use crap DACs or at least the implementation is a big failure. I got a iFi nano idsd which is $200 and the difference is night and day in every aspect of the sound, even compared to X4100W, X5200W. I thought my speakers are bad, but now they woke up. I didn't know my speakers can give me such good clarity, but after this experience I'm gonna get $500 DAC, that's gonna be insanely good.
I don't know about other brands.
This DAC I've got is way better than the DAC in the Marantz PM7005 which is a $1000 STEREO AMP and STEREO amps should be way better than a receiver.
So if a $200 DAC beats out a $1000 stereo amp, then a receiver is not gonna come close even to a stereo amp, not in $2000 price range.
The DAC itself is just a small part of the circuitry and given identical circuitry, you wouldn't be able to hear the difference between DAC's.
What amp are you plugging the iFi nano idsd into ? What you're hearing is probably differences in amplification compared to the Denon AVR's.
Now I'm using denon x3100w, also used x4100w for a week and it was exactly the same.
Also tested ATH-MSR7 with x3100 in pure direct and nano idsd and difference in details is also night and day in every aspect, from bass, mids, highs, way more precise imaging, bigger soundstage, voice clarity. There are sounds that just don't exist using the x3100w in pure direct. I used X3100 as a DAC for at least 1 year and I was blown away by its clarity stepping up from a xonar dx, but now i'm blown away by the nano idsd.
There are songs that sounds so different because of the new sounds, it's like I'm listening to something else, but that is noticeable only on ATH-MSR7 which is a very revealing headphone.
Pure direct just shuts off some circuitry and bypasses Audysey I think. AFAIK all denon/marantz AVR's digitize analogue inputs anyway, so you're still going through the AVR's DAC anyway.
Yeah I have the ATM-M50's, very nice headphones but not that comfortable. I plug them into a Beresford DAC as computer motherboard audio is pretty bad.
So is IMAX too loud? When explosions hit it is loud as fuck. It's awesome though.

I do find the content good though, other than the looking down the nose stuff you mention.
I don't think they are mocking anyone AND defiantly are not mocking anyone's A/V prowess/knowledge when posting these "how to's". My perception and take-away is that they are just simplifying these processes and steps and also having fun in doing so.
These guys are pros and can do just about anything concerning A/V in their sleep so-to-speak and are simply passing on tips, in simple, basic and easy to do guides to help out the general A/V user(s), nothing else intended.
