    I was the lead tester for Rush 2049 arcade; "Maverick", and tester for Rush Alcatraz and Rush 2.
    The reason why the PS2 and GC versions were easier to control in this video is because the car chosen has much better handling, but lower speed. The car chosen for N64 and Dreamcast is much faster but the handling is much looser, so it's much easier to lose control very quickly as it doesn't "snap" back.
    Fun fact: The 8-ball car was the favorite car of the producers son.

    Excuse me what? The N64 port is technically excellent, it holds a respectable framerate and draws a lot of geometry right into the horizon without fogging and very little visible draw in. It looks no worse than any other home 3D game running at 320x240 and looks rather nice on a real CRT.

    • @DurableName
      @DurableName ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Indeed. It also, thankfully, lacks the 'soupy' visuals of most other N64 games. It looks quite clean.

    • @alopexau
      @alopexau ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@DurableName One of the tricks used to increase performance was to bypass the hardware antialiasing, which is what gives it that blockier look. But I don't think that's a detriment as the system's AA was often way too soft.

    RGB looks grainy on N64 because N64 and N64 games are not made for RGB output...
    At least you are going with "real" hardware this time and not comparing emulation issues like in the Flashback episode, this is encouraging :)

  • @Imgema
    @Imgema ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I wouldn't say the N64 version looks awful. Technically at least it's impressive given that the draw distance is so good. Almost no pop-up, which was very rare for racing games on 5th gen consoles.

    I’ve actually been playing nothing but Rush on DC for the last few weeks and it is an absolutely brilliant game. The controls are somewhat “sim” with the car getting loose at high speeds, and your car settings make a dramatic difference too. And I recommend manual transmission. You need to really be exploiting the shortcuts and using the walls, not playing it like Daytona. N64 port is incredible for the hardware.

    I prefer the N64 version's music. Dreamcast sadly got compressed mp3 recordings of the mod files... which were cut down in length, because the files were corrupted after being sent to the external porting team.

    The N64 version is very good and is comparable to the arcade and Dreamcast versions. I’ve played all 3 and I can tell you the console ports have the exact same tracks as the arcade (there are 3 versions of the arcade version too). They aren’t simplified at all. The console ports also have an obstacle course mode which can be unlocked (I forget exactly how). I played so many hours of the N64 version as a kid and I don’t regret it at all especially after playing the other versions and seeing how similar the are to the N64 version. Oh and the N64 version has the superior soundtrack too with exclusive songs specific to that version too!

    I never got to play the arcade port but I played the N64, the Dreamcast and the PS2 ports for short periods of time. The one I liked the most was the Dreamcast one even thought it wasn't the most faithful to the arcade. I didn't like the N64 very much but I always appreciated that it was released for the console when it always needed games with both quality and quantity. As for the GBC port, it feels more like a Rock N' Roll Racing clone but hey! It tries its best and it deserves a good thumbs up!

  • @Reaperman4711
    @Reaperman4711 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I think I disagree with nearly every portion of this comparo. The handling comments all seem off-base, as does repeatedly mentioning the console tracks being simplified. While true in some respects (lap/condition-specific secrets, not shown in vid), but on balance, they've actually added a great deal of complexity to the home courses to get them playing backwards (and very differently backwards).
    I'm not sure about the origin of the extra two unlockable home tracks--if they came from home versions to arcade (via TE/SE) or if TE had the tracks in the works first. Those two play the most differently between versions, like they diverged from a common early draft. And all home ports are missing 'The Rock' for whatever reason. "Doin' Time, Doin' Time on the Rock!"
    I think based on the gameplay you could use more time with the handling model, or are perhaps using controllers with a center deadzone. The footage here doesn't really display mastery of the control scheme. 2049 generally requires a steady hand for steering inputs, but the console versions are considerably more forgiving than the arcade. I'm going to have to double-check that gamecube version (touted as best control @8:25), I think MAT3 did something wrong with analog controls on GC, but the transparency glitches on 2049 were more of a deal breaker for me there.
    Mind my opinions may not be standard, since I'm a weirdo who views 2049 as being near enough to perfect, that I decided my most expensive gaming purchase ever (by a factor of 5) had to be an SE cab.

    • @Stevie2049
      @Stevie2049 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dusk and Dawn were worked on by the Console Team at first by previous Rush 2 devs. At some point mid development of both games (maybe june/july 2000) when Dawn was 99% done and Dusk was 60/70% done, the TE devs took the geometry from those tracks and worked them into the coin op release. Dreamcast Prototypes of 2049 showcase the various stages that Dusk went through, and it also shows that Dawn was pretty much done very early on.
      Also solid response; This game isn't particularly reviewer friendly since it requires a bit of time commitment to get the handling models down and learn the tracks. I can't blame people for not enjoying it out the gate since the presentation (especially on home ports) make the games feel pretty aimless at first.

    • @Reaperman4711
      @Reaperman4711 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They're often slower but help noobs fix jacked jumps while they 'get gud.' It's usually faster without that crutch--BUT--their second function is to extend jumps. In the arcade, this was a function of the clutch pedal (even in auto mode). Usually this is best avoided too, except for some specific scenarios where it can really help avoid geometry (jumps or collisions). There are a good number of these exceptions, but the ones that come to mind: intermediate bumps around the big the hills on the dusk or dawn tracks, or that shortcut jump up the hill in sunset track specifically with cars that have low noses which catch on the landing.

    I've never played the arcade version (never saw the real machine, never tried emulating it). I've only played emulated versions for the N64, Dreamcast and PS2. I consider myself extremely lucky if I don't come in dead last. I have never, ever gotten better than second to last place in ANY of the Rush games on ANY platform. Some of the "shortcuts" have such sharp turns that they seem impossible to take without coming to almost a dead stop. Using the default rocket car on the first track, I can briefly get into first place by going down into the tunnel near the start, but that lead lasts about half a second, and then all the other cars pass me and I spend the entire race just trying to catch up.
    Don't get me wrong, I don't expect to win every race the first time I play it, but I've played these tracks a dozens of times, and never even come close to winning a race. I have done better at almost every other racing game I've ever played.
    I love the graphics though. :)
    EDIT: And now I remember why I've never wanted to mess with MAME. After downloading every San Francisco Rush 2049 from three different sites it complains that every version of the game is missing something. Which has pretty much been my experience with every version of MAME that I've tried to use. The list of games I've actually gotten to work can be counted on the fingers of one hand. :(

    I did not get to play the arcade version of this nearly as much as I would have liked, at least compared to Rush/Rush:The Rock. Now, it's definitely a step down from the arcade version, but the N64 version was still a lot of fun with friends. Yeah, it doesn't look as good and runs slower, but it was still fun. I just wished the N64 had more than 2-players for the main races instead of just stunt, but I imagine it would have ran too poorly. Of course, once I bought a DC and got a taste of that awesome Dreamcast port a year or so after I got the 64 version (aside from this, I think the only games I bought across both N64 and DC were Gauntlet Legends and MK4/Gold)...well, there was no going back. It's even slightly better than the Midway Arcade Treasures 3 port on the PS2 version (bought this copy at the time; never played the other versions of MAT3), IMO, which has a few more performance issues and is natively 480i unlike the VGA compatibility on the DC (the Rush: The Rock port has more performance issues than 2049 on the collection). Rush 2049 is quite fun in versus mode, but I never quite liked the game as much as I do Rush/Rush:The-Rock.

    Just know that RGB mods are not good for most of consoles, the only consoles good with RGB are the ones with original native RGB like megadrive RGB with SCART output for example, and most of the old consoles graphics were made thinking about how a CRT screen would round and smooth the pixels, so it's grainy because your mod + your screen make it like that.
    Reveiw gameplay, review sound, review story, review programming methods, but if you want to review the final rendering just use a normal console with a CRT screen.

    The San Francisco RUSH games were basically laughed at by all gamers and the gamer press of the time for the arcade versions being "pretty" but having questionable gameplay mechanics system like the "wind physics" on top of the regular "car physics" which was intentionally placed by Atari Games arcade team as something that THEY did not understand was going to be extremely unfair and cheap...
    The Arcade games already had multiple difficulty levels and later the Nintendo 64 ports, which made the games seem enjoyable and very playable, only further expose the gameplay cheapness of the bad ideas behind the "wind physics" and "car physics".
    I recall back then that there were slight comparisons to Daytona USA because YES, the San Francisco RUSH games DID indeed borrow some gameplay aspects from Sega's arcade Daytona USA/Virtua Racing however it also attempts to further evolve the previous Atari Games (note this was an arcade company NOT related nor belonging to Atari Corp which was a separate entity even if they might have worked together for an exclusive port if that ever happened) like Hard Drivin', Race Drivin' and the other sequel that played with wind physics and big jumps and even limited "flight" of some type because the arcade developers probably wanted to mess around with having flying cars decades before games like Mario Kart and later Sonic Racing Transformed and others either successfully or unsuccessfully mixed these gameplay elements.
    The home versions make the games much more playable and likable... however it may be my opinion but Atari Games should have been more careful when designing this game and along with Midway Games when making the home conversions, taken the time to make the games much more fair and playable especially if you wanted to do a grand prix championship while also using harder difficulty levels... instead what REALLY happens is that the N64 SF RUSH grand prix mode just exposes how flawed the gameplay is to the point that it becomes unplayable... RUSH 2 N64 exclusive made things better but not perfect enough and then SF RUSH 2049 should have been the best possible and advanced effort on the N64 as well as that Midway Games should have called for requiring the 4MB RAM Pack and used a larger ROM Cartridge size because on the N64, these games actually sold well enough to get that exclusive RUSH 2 version... but they did not bother so we get half assed efforts.
    Note too that Atari Games and Midway Games had some nice arcade games and they really came very close to the arcade on the N64 and could have been much closer and better... and there is no excluse... especially when you play on N64 and do not have to wait for load times because the ROM Cartridge just has the nano second access time advantage.
