  • Old Fashioned Apple Butter - 100 Year Old Recipe -Videoed Aug 22, 2019 - In this video, I'll be making fresh apple butter. Apple butter dates back to the middle ages. You can get the same rich flavor with this method without the intensive labor. Any programable pot, crockpot or pot on the stove can be used to cook the apple butter.
My plan is to have a new video up for y'all this weekend. Alex needed to start learning to edit, so I told her to take this video and take all of the information out about the pot I was using and just leave the recipe. It is a much better video now. I hope you enjoy making some apple butter this fall. Lord willing, I will see you in a few days.
    Remember...Put God First!!!
Ingredients for 8 pints of apple butter:
8 to 10 lbs. of apples
    2 cups of brown sugar
    2 cups of white sugar
1 cup of juice or water (I used apple cider)
    2 teaspoons of vanilla
    1 tablespoon of cinnamon
    1 teaspoon of cloves
    1 1/2 teaspoons of nutmeg
    2 teaspoons of salt
***All spices will have to be adjusted to taste
***Blow that apple butter before you taste it fresh out of the pot. It's boiling hot!! Bret cut that part out of the video.

I wanted to tell everyone that I made Becky’s recipe (this one) just a few days ago…. It made 14 half pints…. I cooked it for 14 hours in my 7 quart crock pot (it had to sit a bit longer on warm as I wasn’t home towards the end of the cooking time ) it was absolutely AMAZING!!
My husband whom doesn’t typically like apple butter (he had only ever had store bought) can NOT stop eating it. 💕
It’s very delicious on a toasted bagel with cream cheese, topped with the apple butter! So, so yummy 😋
I hope you are doing as best as possible Becky…. We all love you and are praying for you.

You are describing what we called "Old Fashion Days" that our church would hold! It was an all day thing. We would start 3-4 o'clock in the morning. We did two copper kettles over an open fire! Started with 25 gallons of cider. We would get that to a boil and then start adding apples. You had to continuously stir it. You would add apples as they boiled down . We would put 25 gallons of apples finely cut up. The sugar and cinnamon were added when it got close to the consistency they wanted. It was a great time!

My husband has also gone to be with the Lord.it’s been 9 years. I don’t like to say I “lost” him because, praise the Lord, he is not lost. I know where he is. Honey, time will help to heal somewhat, but nothing can ever fill that place in our heart that they filled. We were married. 47 years, and it certainly didn’t seem like it. It went by so fast. God bless you and be with you every moment. A verse in the Bible that has meant so much to me is Psalms 4:8. I had never really been alone during my married life, and I could not imagine how I could possibly not be afraid. Read that verse, and I hope it’s a blessing to you, too.

Apple butter brings back some wonderful memories from my childhood. While my wife and I occasionally make crock pot apple butter, which is great, I recall the way my mom and one of my aunts used to make it. My aunt would borrow the pot from a friend of hers, and was a huge copper thing that reminded me of a witches cauldron. The apple butter they made was indescribably good, but I also loved spending the day roaming their farm with my cousins.
There were several orchards in the area at that time, and they would each get apples from one of those places. The last time they did this, I know they had 2 bushels of apples. Then my aunt got a real bargain on some grimes apple that one orchard was selling for nearly nothing, packed in 50 pound paper feed sacks. The skins had a few scabs, or they were misshaped, etc but were fine as far as the meat of them went. They just had ugly appearance. So, that sack full of apple, plus 2 bushel, went in that huge kettle.
They sugar and spices were added, plus a little water in the bottom to avoid scorching to start, then it cooked pretty much all day.
Becky, your recipe looks wonderful, but I thank you especially for bringing back pleasant memories from more than half century ago.

First time I made it last year in a 18 quart roaster so I wouldn't have to keep making smaller batches to can. Turned out excellent I even put In red hot candies you know those little red cinnamon candies. Oh it was heavenly my kid's great grandmother's homemade apple sauce is made that way . No powder cinnamon only the red hot candies. So much tastier and pretty color. That's the old fashion way yum yum. Oh what I wanted to tell you this apple butter taste great on top of peanutbutter bread on toast! Yum yum enjoy.

Always smells so wonderful. I start mine on the stovetop, them move to the oven. Helps with caramelization and doesn't burn (325).

Becky, I’m going to try this recipe. I had saved some of my apples from my tree. I love to try something different. Thank you! Looks like you’re doing good so far. The Lord will continue to give you strength. Great job!

I’ve had other apple butters since my great grandmother passed 48 years ago . I would tell my wife it’s ok but just isn’t the same . It’s not dark enough for one and the flavor just isn’t there , it’s not Nannies… Until we saw and made your recipe this past weekend . BANG SPOT ON !!!! While it was cooking I told my wife it smells right . I gave a jar to my 64 year old sister she said “ that brought back past and memories “ . I never thought I would have the taste of her apple butter again . I was wrong again as usual !! Thanks for the old time flavor . America needs to eat it and bring back old time hard working ethicist and core values . Not get something for nothing . You can’t buy this apple butter in a store YOU have to make it . Awsome Recipe.
