they explain that in the first two episodes; he was the last rider of Balerion, dragon of his grandfather's grandfather Aegon the Conqueror, largest dragon Westeros ever saw before or since -- but Balerion was really old when he bonded with him, he only rode him once, and he died of old age only a year later.
