    In an update on 5/3/2017 you need to launch CSGO with "-insecure" to build cubemaps. blog.counter-strike.net/index.php/2017/05/18667/

    how to check if you have reflections in your map while playing on other games than cs:go
    tf2 - sniper scope
    hl2 - crossbow scope
    l4d/l4d2 - auto-sniper scope

      weapon_cubemap gives you orbs with cubemap textures on them

    There is an easier way to move everything up 64 units. Do the entity report stuff as he says, select all the env_cubemaps, then press CTRL+M, select Move, and type 64 in the Z field and boom, done. Once you get used to the menus this process takes like 5 seconds.

    This just doesn't work for me and it's driving me crazy! I followed every step, even used materials from your RealWorldTextures pack which have reflective vmt files and still, from 5:58 onwards, everything is different for you. I don't have that reflection preview kind of thing in hammer! Please help!

    if you don't have an awp in console type give weapon_cubemap or cubemaps it gives you 6 different spheres that shows you map reflections

    It's a good idea to make a 16x16x2 brush and the env_cubemap 64 units above it and copy + paste both. Delete brushes after. That will save up time WAY a lot.

      Even better - what I do - is make that brush 16x16x64 (i guess it doesn't really matter), a skip texture. That way, you can group them together, paste all you want so it's always 64 high, and the you can leave it because skip is ignored on compile.

      OR you could just change grid size by "Alt+S"/"Alt+A" to the needed 64 units and move the env by pressing ArrowUp only one time =__=

    i did everything and it didnt work, the awp scope doesnt reflect, im using csgo

    For some reason the textures turn up black when in game, even with the cube maps built ??

      its because the lighting in your level is messed up somehow i have the same issue but with some tweaking you can fix it

    Every time I published my map and when I play with friends or boys the cubemaps don't load even though I typed in buildcubemaps before I published the map.

      try to Pack the cubemap into the bsp using vide

      David Vertz I think it's defaultcubemap.vtf but if you open the file in vide it should usually already be inside of the bsp

    Wasn't aware you could use some .vmt parameters to modify the cubemaps like that per material. Very handy to know.
    Oh, and sorry about the Pakrat thing. You can tell I'm abit out of the loop.

    If you're not playing CS:GO then type into the console sv_cheats 1 then type in impulse 81. (works for some games)

    You don't have to leave the cubemap settings to "default".
    If you change to 256x256 the reflections are not blurry but high quality instead.

    To verify cubemaps for other source games, type "impulse 81" into console and it will give a weapon that is just 6 reflective spheres. In GMod , this replaces the SMG and goes away after you switch back to another weapon.

    excellent tutorial ! Thank you for the $envmapcontrast and $envmapsaturation, i didn't know what it was for :)
    Too bad you haven't shown how to create custom specular (which is important i think, it was also missing in your texture tutorial). And maybe also the real-time reflective texture could be nice but yes, not really useful ^^
    If you need information i can help you with those points.
    Anyway, best cubemap tutorial ever !

    For other source games that don't have the awp, there is a special command called impulse 81 which will give you 6 floating balls the work with the reflections. It's for all source games and I think it's better then the awp scope.

    there is a way to fix it, put any skybox texture around this and it will not appear when you look at that direction.

    For some reason my texture is not reflective in gmod. but it shows reflections in hammer.

    When I release my map to the workshop and then play the workshop version the cubemaps arent build/there. What shoud I do?When I type in the Console.Map de_mymapsname and play the non workshop version the cubemaps are there.

      NickDerMitHut You need to submit the one in CSGO sdk content. That should be the only version of the map that gets cubemap updates

      I think THW only goes over Source-Engine stuff.
      You'll need a 3d modeling program (3ds max is your best bet) and a painting program (photoshop or GIMP). Lastly, Wallworm is a plug-in for 3DS max that will transfer your model (and its textures) to a prop you would then add into your map with Hammer (source engine).
      Shawn Olson (creator of Wallworm) has a lot of great tutorials on exporting out your first custom model/texture.

    Do we necessarily need a normalmap to have reflections?

      +El Moustacho you do not need a normal map for reflections. The reflections will be flat.

      Actually it should be available in every Source game (haven't tested with every branch, but most do have it). The model might not be in the game, but a model port from a game that does have it should fix that problem.

    y are they called "cubemaps"? they're reflective thingy's and the little pichure is a sphere, who's bright idea was that?

      basically, it's because when the cube maps are being built, it's taking six photo's of each side of a cube (Cube map) not an actual sphere and blending them together to simulate reflections.

      CS:GO is a Ldr or a HDR mode ?
