Hey! I know this video is about regular hammer but do you have any idea how to do this for the Garry's Mod version of hammer++? I've been trying stuff for the past 3 hours and eventually managed to get them to be seen but hammer++ doesnt display the texture. The textures have a vmt so I'm not sure whats going on.
Wait, why are you using a normal map as a bump map? VTFEdit does have a option to create a VMT to append textures, does using the normal as a bump instead of a normal give better results?
I've been trying to use LightmappedReflective but I dont understand VTFEdit or how source works. The texture works but the reflection is just a missing texture also making the scene really bright. I was slightly experimenting but I did find using a displacement texture (apparently another word for bump) didnt really work in the bumpmap
@@retr0breezy yeah lightmappedreflective is fairly advanced for someone with novice knowledge of source textures. Check the valve developer wiki, they have examples
I havent done a full look but one of the pages was just rambling about some extra code needed. I was defo spooked off by it, I honestly thought it was just making a a shader through VTFEdit then using them with a cubemap entity and done
everything worked well from begening to end except one thing. Which suprisingly is the texture being cropped from 256 by 256 to 64 by 64. I might have missed something you said , though I cannot find it no matter how much I replay. When the file is a VTF , I can see in it's infos that it is well 256 by 256, however when I create the VMT file it doesn't work. I do not see any settings to change that in the VMT creation, neither does it resize it. it crops it. Any idea how to remedy this situation? Thank you very much for this tutorial!
when you import your vtf file, or png file into vtfedit, an initial vtf options menu pops up. There is a check box to enable clamping, check if thats enabled.
Hi, I have a question. If I would upload map with custom texture to workshop, would the texture show up in game to people who subscribed? Amazing tutorial btw.
Ah, by default, no. But, I have another tutorial called packing and publishing, that will show you how to pack the materials and custom assets into your map file so people will see them when they play
when you go to the garrys mod folder, can this work for the team fortress 2 folder as well? im assuming so, since its a valve game as well, but just making sure
What I want to know is will the custom texture will download if someone gets it from the steam workshop, or do I have to make a mod that has the content?
yes, VIDE or Pakrat, or even like compile pal or whatever it's called. I've made another video specifically explaining the packing and uploading process if you'd like to check that out
For VTFEdit? You can try to locate the valve developer community page for it and try a different link. If those don't work, there's another version of vtf edit called vtf edit reloaded so you could try that.
so, as long as your image has transparency and you import with alpha dxt 3 or 5, then it should be good. You just have to add $translucent 1 into your vmt.
depends. If you mean actually completely create one from scratch then I'd say yes. You'd have to use substance designer for that or something similar. Now making textures from images and making them seamless, that's easier.
@@Alexscott20 oh yeah you're right. also when I try and use the file I get "no image" in hammer and it won't show when compiling. the .vmf looks right so I don't know what's wrong.
Thanks bro. Nice straightforward tutorial. Subbed.
Thanks.
Simple and straightforward! Thank you!
No problem! :)
i now have a texture of lord gaben for my map, thank you

Couldn't tell you, if you installed hammer++ with source sdk 2013 then you should put the textures in the folder of sdk 2013
did you figure it out?
Wait, why are you using a normal map as a bump map? VTFEdit does have a option to create a VMT to append textures, does using the normal as a bump instead of a normal give better results?
bump map is essential normal map in source, you rarely use $normalmap, the only thing ive ever used it in is LightmappedReflective

You will have to pack the content into your bsp map file. I have a seperate tutorial on my channel that explains that
good tutorial but question, i still get the missing textures purple and black thing any idea what to do?
make sure your vmt file points to your vtf file location
@@Alexscott20 ok thats what i figured thx
if i make a map with custom textures and make it into an addon, will the textures still show for other people?
You will have to pack the texture into the .bsp file, which I have also made a video on how to do that.

Try reinstalling VTFEdit it worked for me.

my bsp file opens as a notepad. it wont let me upload to gmod
i made a pixeled brick texture but its texture is just the missing texture mind to help?
That means the VMT cannot find the vtf. Make sure the vmt has the proper file directory in it for the vtf

for some reason when i tried to open the vmt file it used vtf edit to open it
right click it and press open with and then choose notepad

make sure your vmt points to the right file path
Yes it does.
