In virtually every Cthulhu story the primary target for the "Unknowable horrors" from the space between the various dimensions is humanity. Even this story references that with it's depiction of the human supermind as a live baited trap for the entire multiverse. There's a reason for this fact that is mentioned in several Lovecraft novels, I can't recall exactly what it was, something about overly fertile minds, manifestation and fear of the unknown or whatever. All I can say is "Hold ma beer".
The line: "It then swung it's fist and I obviously didn't dodge. This was an astral body of course it couldn't be hit. And then it hit me, literally," Has the same energy as, "I saw a ball bouncing down the road earlier, and then it hit me." Speaks to me in such a level that makes my brain buzz with happiness.
I actually had a flashback to the movie The Patriot when you see a cannon ball skip across the ground and hit the front line of soldiers from the the soldier's perspective. You feel you can and should dodge but because it's coming straight at you you can't gauge the range or the speed it's actually going.
You know, humans learning of this barrier would instantly lead to quite a few different groups attempting to break it. So I think it’s fitting the author put in the bit about how this discovery was just before the inter-dimensional war against Cthulhu.

Should have added that "it" (the clown) held a strange device in its hand that was a red ball with a brass cone at one end and when it squeezed the red ball the noise that rang out was a deafening "HONK" within the dome causing everything within to stop and stare at the intruder that the clown pointed at.

Great story, been to that dome, spent several years staring at it when a child. As young adult immortal, the dome still leaks at times, but less so every year. Cthulhu has no hope in the upcoming war, though it will be billions dead on Earth when it starts in earnest. As an immortal though, all I can do is sigh, and tell you the future.
If the Dome gets fully breached, then the Humans can turn their full psychic powers against the Gods, Cthulhu etc. I'm not saying that the humans would win but the entities will suffer greatly and the losses will be catastrophic.

Example, once I told someone that a guy 100+ people were following would die at noon, Easter Sunday, 2 weeks before he did (he was in his 40s). That's just one of several examples. My wife has also done these things. We don't plan or control these events, which occur every few years, completely wo our control. I am telling you all now that the dome WILL come down, and it will take ONE human to chain all those creatures, gods ect in a bloody battle which will keep them contained for at least 1,000 years. They will then be let loose one last time and that final battle in The War will result in the nuclear disintegration of the entire universe. Even so, my wife, me and our 5 children will all survive. They built a giant mind controlled machine to fullfill all of their waking wishes, but didn't consider what would happen when they were asleep.
