Agree 100% regarding the rc 'dust magnets' Gavin! What a pig of a job..... I spent the best part of a day dusting /detailing my shelf queens and display racks over xmas! 😬 Interested in the methods you use bearing in mind the extreme size of your collection? I generally use a soft clean paintbrush on the chassis and wheels. I then use an old soft t shirt to get the worst of the dust off the body shells, followed by a thorough polish using a duster that's been sprayed with automotive cockpit shine(simoniz, auto glym etc) This brings up a gorgeous deep shine, and also reduces static which stops the dust clinging to the plastic and re settling. A bit OTT? Maybe..... but they look delightful once finished! 👌 👍 👍 👍
I just go at it with air duster, furniture polish for the shelves and a damp warm wet cloth. Nothing fancy but I try and keep on top of it so the cars never get really bad.
Potentially helpful tip regarding decal application: Try using a heat gun / hair dryer to soften the decals during the application process. This makes them more pliable so they conform to complex curves. Just be careful with the amount of heat applied as it can ruin your decals.
Don't stress it man! That body looks fantastic! Especially with the complexity of some of those stickers, holy crap! Love the yellow, it looks dead on match to box art on my computer's screen.
@@RCKickschannel I just learned it last week. 😆 I called it a custom fade paint job. Really rare one of a kind. The video will be up next week - it was my first kit and first light colored paint job. Lots learned but still thrilled with the final look. Hope you’re feeling better.
Gavin using the liquid and a hairdryer really helps getting decals to form on bends and curves. I used to pull my hair out. But now decals have become a breeze.
Incredible detail and work you put in, and it shows. Looks amazing. I do like the chassis building and the driving/repairing part of the hobby. But the painting and decals - puh, i always suffer haha 😀
Regarding the fins, I use a brush. Spray some of the paint into the corner of the lid, then brush the paint into the fins. I would also block them off if I was going to paint a different colour on the body so you don't get shadows in there.
Great result in the end Gav, i had that same issue with the xls wing. Wasnt happy with it so got another and left it unpainted. Then ditched that for a jc racing one in white. Job done 😂
Great video as usual. I use an electric hand held blower gum from Amazon and blow them all off every weekend and use a swiffer duster every 3 month on them. They stay nice and shiney. KOONIE Cordless Air Duster
Snap, just done my build and your video is a day too late. Wish had painted behind the driver in black! I did neon yellow from core RC and it looks great. Off to my club with it soon to mix it up with some LMP’s ( I will use another shell)
Heat and patience can be your friend as mentioned on decals, I also use a product called "Rapid Tac" on all my decals big, small, 1:1 and hobby. The car is very rewarding when finished, and i like how the decals lend themselves to allow different color options. I did a flo orange and a flo green .
I have never seen this box in person, so I cannot say for sure, but from what you mentioned in the video (somewhere between acid yellow and green), it may be something close to the Citron Yella/Curious Yellow of the Dodge/Plymouth muscle cars.
Yeah I hate decals on compound curves like that, they are never fun! It did turn out great and I don't blame you for not wanting to ding it up as I wouldn't want to do another one either!! Take care and I hope you feel better soon!!!
I really don't like pre-cut decals for exactly the reason you discovered here, but you can still cut them out on the backing and then just trim pieces of backing away.
Hi. I hate precut decal sheets as well, but I figured out a way to work with it. I cut each out as if they were not cut (like a typical Tamiya sheet) capturing the pre-cut line plus 1-2 mm of extra material. I then remove the outer edging from the pre-cut line and I have the entire decal on the backing material that can be applied like a Tamiya one. Try it :)
Like Kevin Talbot says you don't need to be a purists to enjoy RC Car building and painting its should be a fun hobby which it is. Everyone has there own ideas and box art is only there as a guide. Be boring if we painted all our cars the same colour and design. Happy New Year Gavin and family.
Unfortunately, you can't unsee your own mistakes. But it looks OK on screen. Mine would look like an explosion in a tamiya p.s. paint factory. If I squint, mine are as good as yours😁👍
With the extra wing and the extra stickers the inside of the rear wing stanchions look too busy, I’d cut some black vinyl to shape and continue the black accents to the stanchions. Oh and the red E sticker should be the other way up, it’s so marshalls can set off extinguishers but only your driver can read it! 😉
what color yellow did you use for the optima mid se? I'm going to be painting a yellow version of that soon, thinking of using the ps-19 with the lamé flake ps-53 . . . . but now that I've got the paint I'm thinking the ps-19 might be too dark . . . .is that ps-6 on yours, too?
Applying decals is an under-appreciated art. It often looks so simple but in reality it is sometimes the hardest part of a kit build. A lot of the time you only get one chance and if you get one slightly wonky the look of the completed car is ruined. I remember fitting decals to my 190E Evo II with Koenig Pilsener livery. It is black with narrow silver lines all over the body that must align around the whole body even though everything is in 3D. Total and utter nightmare to complete and I would say near impossible to do a satisfactory job. After the work to build the kit the end result left me rather disappointed despite my best efforts.
Ever tried airbrush? It's a lot easier to get the paint exactly where you want it and it dries up in no time. Faskolor makes lexan paint for airbrush but there are probably other brands to.
I think you did a very good job. I always wonder if the designers tested their product before they put it on the market? Wouldn't they see the problems with the decals and painting? I think the car looks great! I hope you and the family have a happy and healthy new year.
Gav, I have I have said it before and will say it again... The Fantom series is fantastic, small 4x4 1/12 scales perform so well and would be a blast to race. My experience from the normal 2WD 1/12 racing is that they are one of the more challenging RC racing classes so will always be fairly niche. Kyosho just needs to update the driveline like they have done with others in the legendary series, the chain may be authentic but it is naff when it comes to reliability and maintenance plus it can be a challenge for occasional kit builders.
@@RCKickschannel I'm just trying to find the correct color of yellow to use for my 2022 RE-RE. any suggestions? I currently have the PS-19 Camel Yellow. Not sure its the correct shade for box art.?
could you try if you can afford a truggy vid a know its not your style but would love a truggy build on this channel attention to detail is what you do
one of my pet peeves is that these companies re-issue the cars and then put a crappo statement in the instructions like: "paint using box-art as guide". How hard is it to say, "Kyosho CT12 yellow" or even recommend a Tamiya paint?
The CRC2 isn’t so bad as you can do gold or a translucent yellow and gold mix but the 60th Mid Prototype was more of a challenge due to the box art rim colour and having to match that up.
i love the yellow shades, nice job
Looks tops, great work, Cheers and happy New Year to you and the Fam.!
You've done a great job of a tricky bodyshell, and those decals, blimey!!
Looks fantastic, great job !
I started cutting out the pre cut stickers, made life easier.
Great video Gav, I quite like the more in depth videos. Car looks great 👍
Thanks Gav for the helpful tips! Patience is of the essence for that one I guess!
Especally around the rear wings and that front sticker
IT LOOKS AWSOME 👌
Agree 100% regarding the rc

Yep I did that 👍🏻👍🏻
Yes it does look good. What a challenge.
The Fantom looks like an awesome car! Yours looks great! Nice work. 👍
Thanks! 👍
Fins look cool darker gav
Looks really great Gavin, nice job :)
Yes, all our cars are dust magnets!!! Fine to see, mine are not the only 😁😁
It looks fantastic great work man i love it.

frank here daam Rick u always killing it
Wow😮 those decals are crazy difficult. The dark bits on the fins turned out well with the decals and the additional spoiler. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Funny enough on the camera the fins issue shows up more. It’s not as obvious in real life but one to watch out for if you are painting one.

Not perfect but it came out OK in the end.
Great build of a awesome RC love on road racing!!! You did a great job on the decals and details! Very cool!

Like the clear paint trick love the overall kit and build really awesome
This is like the weeks top of the pops for me 😍 wow how I have longed for this episode 😊😊😊❤️

Overall beautiful build. I like prefer that yellow over the box at. Well done!
~Also with drivers etc you can use ink to finish them off, kind of like how mini figs get painted in Warhammer

Yep that wing is a pain for the same reason
@@RCKickschannel once you get an airbrush it may be possible to paint that bit 🤔
Something I like about that knife is you can cut the handle down with a hacksaw which makes it easier to use in tight spaces.
Great video as usual. I use an electric hand held blower gum from Amazon and blow them all off every weekend and use a swiffer duster every 3 month on them. They stay nice and shiney.
KOONIE Cordless Air Duster
Hey try heating a wet sponge or cloth in microwave, then press down on the decals to help adhesive grap and conform to body.
How is this different to the blue one?

If you use a little bit of heat to soften the transfer
Did that 👍🏻👍🏻

I really don't like pre-cut decals for exactly the reason you discovered here, but you can still cut them out on the backing and then just trim pieces of backing away.
Could you not spray some of the yellow into a pot and use a long fine sable brush to work the paint into those translucent wing end plates?

Much prefer without the option wing.
i would use an airbrush for the fins as it sprays really fine and wont run
Yep I think that’s the way to go
Ever tried airbrush? It's a lot easier to get the paint exactly where you want it and it dries up in no time. Faskolor makes lexan paint for airbrush but there are probably other brands to.
have you ever tried to use putty to mask off the difficult parts? does that work?

A belt conversion kit would be epic
😊
Great video Galvin!! The car looks great!! Is that the same color yellow you used to paint your Optima Mid?
I didn’t paint the vintage Turbo Mid, it came like that.

would not of done the black at both sides of the car , would of done it entirely in Yellow at both sides or even a Fluo green colour....
Yep you could loose the black side skirts easy enough.
You sound like you have a cold gav
Yep I have
You sound poorly Gav?
Yep I’ve picked up a cold
am i first
Try the soap and water technique on decal next time!
If they can wrap a whole car in vinyl an RC car
Can’t be that difficult? Nice work! Great build.
I did and its in the video?
