The idea of "synths dont fit in orchestras" is an interesting one. Theres a great Far Side cartoon, with an orchestra and the conductor is saying "Stop! Stop! Whats that sound? Whats that sound?", and in the corner theres a guy with a banjo. Larson of course apparently loves the banjo, so it was an affectionate not hostile dig. The reality is however orchestras have always been hosts of musical rule breaking and experimentation. The modern orchestra bears little resemblance to a classical or romantic era orchestra, and many of the great composers actively experimenented with oddball instruments, coming up with things like the Wagner Tuba (A sort of mutant between the trombone and the french horn. Epic, but subdued), and of course in modernist and postmodernist genres of orchestral stuff people have done wild stuff to get those sounds. Moral of the story, be a principled musician, but dont pick principles which impose limits to your horizon, do whatever it goddamn takes to make the sounds that let your principles flower.
