Scotto’s neck deep into converting his AE86 Corolla into a proper race car for Gymkhana GRiD this year, and it’s time to do some mad scientist stuff to that junkyard Ford diff! Making it fit means a shorter axle rod, a fancy carbon fiber clutch plate kit from Ford Racing, dual caliper Wilwood brakes, and of course taking a torch to the pumpkin. It actually makes sense if we explain the science stuff (probably).

i think the top links are flipped the wrong way. you'll hit the body on compression. Im pretty sure they need to be pointed down
No, the links hit the housing when the car is set up too low. If you flipped them they would hit at droop.

Don't forget to strengthen the rear strut towers, there prone to cracking with coilovers IIRC
good excuse to make a built in strut brace in to the cage
So I have this exact same setup in my 86 with a beams swap and 7 years of hard drifting since it has been built I haven't noticed anything but as Niels said good excuse for something cool looking 8)
@@MrBlockohwhen you shorten the long side of the axle housing, does the new overall length equal the 86 axle? Or are we shortening the 8.8 just to fit under the 86 and not to match the axle sizes. Thanks!

Man. You guys really need to pay up for a good welder. All 8.8s are cast steel center section. Er70s wire is totally fine. Just use 309l tig wire it has enough nickel in it if you’re worried about ductility. It’s one thing to be slops but at least give correct information. You have enough resources from actual pros.

As a mid 40's life long Ford owner/fan I can confirm that friction modifier takes stinky gear oil to a level nobody wants to deal with.
As a truck guy I'm terribly jealous of the weight on that rear axle.

Definitely the most simplest build out of all the gymkhana grid cars. That being said, really hope Scotto can finish this build in time ie: not last minute
Diff fluids & additives freaking REEK!!! Especially when they're burnt, lol. New out of the bottle is actually a fresh walk in the park when compared to burnt Diff fluid, which would be closer to a walk in a landfill on a hot day 🤢🤮. It's so foul...

Your 50/50 diatro idea isn't right. Engine is sprung weight, axle is unsprung. So your weight bias is off. Science!

the only 8.8's made of actual cast iron predate 1940 by a long way... just because it is a cast part does not mean it's cast iron. just making excuses to waste shop dime doing nothing and being addicted to those energy drinks. cast iron gets brazed or riveted... 8000psi tensile cast iron drop it on the floor and it brakes in half.
