Using a candle under a poncho works (if you do it correctly). But as we often see, things are demonstrated on TH-cam by people who purport to be experts and instructors, but don't actually know the correct techniques and subtle nuances required to successfully use the skill's they demonstrate, so they fake the results for the camera. Clearly the paper thin shitty blanket used, with his head under it, holding the thermometer in his hand, directly over the heat source, no facility for air circulation around the back and shoulders, and not creating an air seal around the edges of the shelter, is a serious problem. And even when done correctly you are left with a very uncomfortable night with a cold back and leg cramps. But providing its done correctly with a canvas or nylon rain cape/poncho and a wool blanket or poncho liner, you do have a shelter that will help compensate for your reduced heat output while resting when you have to stop due to exhaustion, and ultimately help your chances of survival. I was shown how to do the candle/poncho shelter back in 1976 by a guy who had been doing it for over forty years himself and had been shown it as a young man in the late 1940's by a WWII veteran, who had allegedly been shown it by a WWI veteran during the second world war. The technique is legitimate and has great bona fides, but has to be done correctly. I myself have used the technique many times with great success while staying out in winter weather, and have also been teaching it "correctly" since the early 1990's to both military and civilians. It does work, but not the way the "TH-cam experts" are showing it.
Hi @JackthornLife, thanks for contributing with your great and well explained comment! It's always good to have different views on a topic. Hope to read more from you soon.
A lot of Bushcraft tips and trick videos are junk but this one has some merit. Years ago I worked with a soldier who did this technique with a standard rain poncho. He liked it because it did provide some warmth and would dry out his wet trousers in the crotch. Is it the best technique ever? No. Does it help a bit at removing some of the suck you might experience? Yes. Especially if fires (candlelight is masked by your body and poncho) are not allowed and you can't put shelters up.
