TH-cam is full of outdoor, survival and bushcraft tips. Sometimes they are good, but sometimes they are unpractical and do not work at all. Being in wilderness, doing bushcraft, survival, hunting or trapping, is not about a set of tricks or skills. It is about a universal understanding of nature and other things. Understanding is the key of being successful rather then anything else. That's why...

Maybe not Artic temperatures in the UK in the winter, but we do get below freezing temperatures. Keeping the fuelled up burner with cap screwed down in my jacket’s inside pocket, keeps it at close to my body temperature and I’ve never had a problem. Butane stoves pressure is way down so ineffective, Trangia is superior.
Great video man! Just found your channel and you have great content! I guess I'll have to start binge watching now. 😁 I really envy you (in a good way 😅). It'd be awesome to spend 100 days up in Lapland in the winter. The energy and the vibe that Lapland's winters have is unmatched. I don't trap, but I wouldn't mind just strolling around between all the fells and the amazing wintery scenes. 🏔

A windscreen will help as you are loosing so much needed heat being blown away. Also a pot an inch or so above the stove will trap more heat which will get the stove up an running even quicker.

Yes, it is a very thin wire. All snaring is done with wires and not with ropes.

Isn’t more economical to raise pine martens? Instead of spending all your time without results? You can still have winter expeditions and fun outdoors, but at least you can pay your bills.
Hi @crazycoyote1738, an important part of the pine marten trapping is to reduce the predator pressure on the bird population, especially the 5 types of grouses we have here. Finland is one of the last refugium for capercaillie, black grouse, willow grouse, hazel grouse and ptarmigan. Because of the spread of the human a lot of predators bypass natural selection by the wide availability of food to them due to the human. Other animals suffer from that unnatural high predator population (note red fox wouldn't be up here at all normally). From a financial perspective the pine marten trapping is not very valuable and it can be that I do not do it any more next year and concentrate more on red foxes which are the bigger issue.
@@nomadic-trapper I understand, thank you for explaining. May be you can combine both, so you can help the grouse and also make profit. Be well and good luck!
without network? like that was ever a thing.
Do you think a .22 lr can kill a eland from 50 meters away? The largest antelope in the world.
Hi @janlouis72, Please note: This is just a theoretical discussion for better understanding of terminal ballistics and most likely not lawful anywhere. When I look at the bone penetrating capabilities of the .22lr I think it can kill every land living animal of the size of a moose if: - you aim on the brain - you hit the head bone in an angle that the bullet penetrates Perhaps an elefant or other very large animals have a too thick head bone to penetrate or the lead bullet dismantles too strong instead of penetrating. If you use a lead free bullet the penetrating capabilities and the dimensional stability should be better.
Hello@@nomadic-trapper, thank you very much for the reply, information and video.

Using a candle under a poncho works (if you do it correctly). But as we often see, things are demonstrated on TH-cam by people who purport to be experts and instructors, but don't actually know the correct techniques and subtle nuances required to successfully use the skill's they demonstrate, so they fake the results for the camera. Clearly the paper thin shitty blanket used, with his head under it, holding the thermometer in his hand, directly over the heat source, no facility for air circulation around the back and shoulders, and not creating an air seal around the edges of the shelter, is a serious problem. And even when done correctly you are left with a very uncomfortable night with a cold back and leg cramps. But providing its done correctly with a canvas or nylon rain cape/poncho and a wool blanket or poncho liner, you do have a shelter that will help compensate for your reduced heat output while resting when you have to stop due to exhaustion, and ultimately help your chances of survival. I was shown how to do the candle/poncho shelter back in 1976 by a guy who had been doing it for over forty years himself and had been shown it as a young man in the late 1940's by a WWII veteran, who had allegedly been shown it by a WWI veteran during the second world war. The technique is legitimate and has great bona fides, but has to be done correctly. I myself have used the technique many times with great success while staying out in winter weather, and have also been teaching it "correctly" since the early 1990's to both military and civilians. It does work, but not the way the "TH-cam experts" are showing it.

@@nomadic-trapper weißt du schon wann dein Messer Video kommt?
@@max_fjellstorm hm, jetzt fühle ich mich unter Druck gesetzt 😅. Spaß beiseite, ich kann es als nächstes aufnehmen und dann kommt es bald!
A lot of Bushcraft tips and trick videos are junk but this one has some merit. Years ago I worked with a soldier who did this technique with a standard rain poncho. He liked it because it did provide some warmth and would dry out his wet trousers in the crotch. Is it the best technique ever? No. Does it help a bit at removing some of the suck you might experience? Yes. Especially if fires (candlelight is masked by your body and poncho) are not allowed and you can't put shelters up.
Hi, thanks for sharing your opinion!
Great adventure brother! You are doing very well, and your videos and drone filming are well made, may be more action scrams and live videos will make it even more interesting. By the way, We call it sled. Sledge hammer is a different thing😊
Hi, thanks for your words. I will have some more videos for the trapper stories in the upcoming ones as in the beginning I was not filming anything at all :-). Thanks for the hint with the sled/sledge :-D. I better stick with the finnish word ahkio!
@@nomadic-trapper All good brother, life is too short to stop and feel bad or be discouraged. Good luck and be well.
There are reasons government entities limit the smallest usable calibers for hunting bigger species. I find the idea of hunting even roe deer with a .22lr very much unethical. Even aiming for the head in a hunting scenario is very questionable at best. Not to mention you are talking about a subsonic cartridge. A small bullet is very sensitive to wind and they drop very fast and hold only 40J of energy to 100m. The legal limit to hunt moose over here is over 65 times that. There is absolutely no reason to give up the advantages of a center fire caliber when hunting big game animals.
Hi @ExChalice, you are right with most things (besides that 40J on 100m). Shooting on a head is not a problem if everything fits. In Lapland we shoot grouses on the head on up to 200m. You can learn to shoot under 1cm on 100m. This video is not about actually hunting a moose with a .22lr. As I describe in the video I made it for the following purposes: - sensitizing that .22lr is a serious rifle cartridge and not any toy - showing that in theory hunting is possible and that meadow shooting is working - romanticizing about the idea of living with a backpack in wilderness - showing that every bullet is dangerous and needs to be handled with care originally I also wanted to discuss shot placements which I left out for the described reasons. On the same hand you would need to state that hunting with bow is unethical as the energy is there even much less.
You can not ”learn” to shoot better than your equipment can provide. 1 MOA is often kept as a benchmark of accuracy for off the shelf rifle and ammo. That can be rounded to 2,5cm to 100m or 5cm to 200m. Without shooter error. And yeah, I picked C-Bee loads ballistics chart. My bad. The best I could find was E100=92J. That’s still very little.
@@nomadic-trapper Any attempt at an objective consideration of bullet behavior in a hunting/survival context will bring people out of the woodwork to condemn imagined crimes. It hardly matters what you actually claimed to begin with.
@@ExChalice You can shoot much better then 1 MOA, also in hunting situations.
@@koscheithedeathless1838 Hi, I do not agree. As I stated there are reasons to understand that topic: - sensitizing that .22lr is a serious rifle cartridge and not any toy - showing that in theory hunting is possible and that meadow shooting is working - romanticizing about the idea of living with a backpack in wilderness - showing that every bullet is dangerous and needs to be handled with care Besides that in some countries you are forced to end the live of a suffering animal no matter which weapon you have!
Thanks again for a well reasoned explanation. I've come to a similar conclusion myself about the underrated capability of the .22lr and been thinking of getting myself a Winchester Wildcat recently. While I'm less concerned than you about the risk from lead from occasional use your explanation of the energy per area and increased Cd around the speed of sound and testing of the sub sonics was helpful also. Thanks.
You're welcome! I'm glad to hear that it helped you.
