    I used to be the same way about naps. I started just lying down flat on my back, playing ambient noise (like a rain storm), and closing my eyes. I took the pressure off of myself about "having" to sleep during naps, and sometimes I don't even fall asleep, but the rest time is still really beneficial to me!

    Instead of using tweezers to rescue leaves, hold it in front of a humidifier or run under water and use wet Q-tips to help the leaf, that way u won't stab through the leaf by mistake with the tweezers 😉

    You should scrape the outer layer off that black velvet corm. That way the part that will root has direct contact with the moss. 😊

    Myco seems to be very useful in theory, but I think it's very important to know what you're using. Some of the fungi used are specific to only one genus of plants, while others can interact with a broader spectrum of genera. I haven't used it myself, but if the brand is open about what species of fungi it contains, it might be very helpful to look into that a bit further just to make sure you're not just using something that isn't going to do anything (especially since it tends to be kind of a pricy product).

    I agree re. helping leaves! 😂 I ‘helped’ 2 or 3 leaves on my melanochrysum. They ended up ripped on one side but it allowed the plant keep growing and now it is unfurling on its own. Before that it was sticking so long that the stems went black and the whole leaf was falling off

    I was on quite the hair journey myself! I buzzed my hair back when I was 19. I had very wavy/curly hair, so while growing it out it looked ridiculous. I'm glad I chopped it because my hair came back super healthy and even curlier. When I was pregnant with my daughter a couple years ago, I had the best hair ..I'm talking thick gorgeous curls....never needing to do anything with my hair. Then a substantial amount of it fell off shortly after birthing my daughter. Now I'm left with two distinct lengths of hair, it looks like I have terrible extensions in. Talk about a while hair journey!

    I totally feel you on the naps. I never end up falling asleep or feeling refreshed after, only like I wasted daylight and could've gotten other things done. I recently got the Calm app... maybe a sleep story would help me next time. 🤷‍♀️
    Also, I took my squamiferum out of terracotta and put her in plastic and she is taking off now. Spring season and fertilizer probably helped. But mine was drying out way too fast in a chunky mix in terracotta.

    Daaannnggg, ok! Your second set came out so nice! You're improving so quickly 🙌😍
    I feel the same way about napping! I get anxious because I get that same feeling, like I'm not 'supposed to' be doing this or just something about the stillness causes my thoughts to race. It sounds silly but it really helped me to speak kindly to myself while I felt that way. I wouldn't let myself get up or try to avoid the feelings but rather comforted myself and giving myself permission to take this time for myself. Something about literally telling myself that I am safe and that I deserve this time really helped to make it easier. Things can wait, nothing will go wrong if I take this time for myself, etc. Just lying still, closing my eyes, and almost pretending to sleep helped, too. ❤️

    So wild to me to hear the houseplant community start talking about mycorrhiza! I never comment on YT, but your videos bring me peace (and super useful plant help). What’s wild is that my dad was kind of the “godfather” of mycorrhiza and I never thought it would be something people talk about. We moved to California from Canada in the 90s so that he could start the OG mycorrhiza company (still the best imo). It works like crazy. You had it right, it’s a symbiotic organism. Plants secrete sugars as waste, the fungus uses this and produces N-P-K at the exact levels for the specific plant it’s paired with. Don’t be shy with it, use more! Spores are living, you won’t burn the plants :)
    For those that are interested in trying it, compare spore/granule counts on the products you’re looking at. Look to the cannabis and (surprisingly, giant pumpkin growers) for the best info. Pair it with a nitrogen fixing bacteria product. It’s especially awesome for repotting/transplanting. Thank you for your amazing content Fern!

    Ha! I am rescuing a smaller wet stick than that. I measured it and all it had left was the node itself which is less than 1/2 " and I put it in perlite and it's got the tiniest leaf ever. You practically need a magnifying glass, but it is a leaf ;) I believe it's what is left from an imported verrucosom. Now when I import I try to plant them, but as soon as I see a decline I'm now wrapping 'all' nodes in the spag moss they came with.

    Napping! I wouldn't have said this a week or so ago but I've just started working with a psychologist for anxiety and she has me practising deep breathing three times a day. Just a couple of minutes, three seconds in through the nose and 4 seconds out through the mouth.
    Unintended consequence when I do this in bed is I get sooo sleepy so it's turned into this nightly thing and I'm an insomniac and I am drifting off so quickly I love it and wish I'd tried it years ago.

    Chai is a staple tea; also, I don't know how much you need to take for it to be dangerous, but licorice in high concentration and frequency can make you sick, so please err on the side of caution when drinking your licorice tea! Those plant tonics sound really interesting, also snooped on their page and they have some loose leaf tea...
    I'm so happy your plants are doing so well right now. it's nice to change care methods sometimes, tbh. I don't have a compacta hoya, but I have heard they like being a bit more tight in regards to pots.

    Set your alarm for 20 minutes and keep your eyes closed for 20 minutes. The goal is not to sleep the goal is to keep your eyes closed for 20 min. If you fall asleep great. If not no big deal. But #1 do not rest past the 20 min. Get up and do something right after. Give it a shot. Works great for me!

    I've done quite a bit of scientific work on mycorrhizas - but not in Hoyas. I kind of wonder in these epiphytic plants how useful/common they'd be. Not very is my initial thought. Obviously mycorrhizal fungi help the plant gather nutrients from organic forms that the plant can't otherwise access. That said, if you're fertilising your plant regularly (albeit weakly I suppose) there should be more than enough inorganic nutrients that the plant can access on its own without mycorrhizal fungi. The bigger problem maybe simply that plants that are variegated largely lack chlorophyll in their variegated sections and so those leaves don't add much to the plants vigour.... Anyway, a thought before anyone spends money on mycorrhizal inoculants (which may or may not actually form on the roots of your plan).

    Moving towards taking naps can take a while but I think a midday rest is so beneficial 💗 I find laying down around the same time each day can help your body know it’s rest time. Nap time info: napping is beneficial at either 20 minutes or 90 minutes, but a 60 minute nap can leave you feeling more groggy than you started because of the point at which you are getting woken up in your sleep cycle (a sleep cycle is about 90 minutes).
    I like what someone else said about just resting for a short time, that can totally be refreshing and very grounding :)

    Hi Fern, try putting the corm into water. I tried my ones in soil, perlite and water and the water ones were the only ones to do anything and it was also fast! :-)

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you fully submerge them?

    • @Tinas.jungle
      @Tinas.jungle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree 😊 water always worked for mine! I do a "shallow puddle" if you get what I mean 😂 like not have them swimming just enough to cover the corms, also change my water weekly not sure if that helps but at least I keep an eye on them 🤞

    • @tynatheunicorn
      @tynatheunicorn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I do the “shallow puddle” method as mentioned. Basically submerge the corm cca from half to almost fully, change the water weekly to biweekly and try to keep the corm either facing as it would while typically growing or on its side.

    I had the same experience with the soil tonic, the last part that I poured was foamy and satisfying but mostly it was just liquid. I also didnt know about the blender part! I shook mine to mix it but I will try to blend and shake!

    Would you recommend I propagate my corms in perlite inside of sphagnum moss ? Also once they grew roots in perlite can I shift them to a chunky aroid mix with Vermi compost ? Without them going into shock or having the roots rot. I’ve lost a lot of Alocasia’s please help :(

    Fern GIRL!!! You’re talkin to a professional napper! lol. I get like that when I got to lay down sometimes and my lil hack is to count to 100 then back down… either I never make it to 40 or past 70 counting back down. Especially when I can time it with the anxious beats I’ll count every 2-3 beats and you’ll notice yourself slowing down then…. GONE!!!!
    And with saving your babies!!! Honey do what you gotta. I never leave mine to struggle, it hurts too much. Lol. I usually just take a dropper with water and drop a few drops down the petiole around where it’s stuck let it sit for a few seconds then give it a lil shimmy and it come right out and unfurls with 0 damage!

    I can't take naps. There's def days I want to and could fall asleep easily but if I take a nap im done for the day! It doesn't refresh me. Im just groggy all day after napping to the point of getting extremely agitated if I have to get up and do something. If I do nap I end up sleeping too long and I'm so lazy the rest of the day I end up being up all night.

    Fern, I adore you. I want your life! LOL! Really want that new shirt, girl. Any thoughts on why my wet sticks in perlite are molding? The perlite has orange mold and I don't know what to do or if it's safe. Any idea? Love your channel, so relaxing.

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve had mould on mine too but I’ve never really done anything about it as it didn’t cause a problem. You can spray with an anti-fungal houseplant spray and that should get rid of it!
