  • The Northrop XB-35 and YB-35 was an experimental design, "flying wing" heavy bomber developed by Northrop during and after World War II. It was intended for long-range bombing missions, and was planned to be able to bomb Nazi-occupied Europe in the event that Britain fell.

    Seeing the XB-35 and YB-49 flying over Coalinga, CA when he was in highschool is what inspired my grandfather, Vic Horton, to pursue a flying career. He eventually ended up at NASA and flew the Blackbird and other famous aircraft.

    I just want to say, my great grandfather was the Chief Engineer for the X/YB-35 and 49 along side Jack Northrop. Always will be my favorite piece of aviation history. Keep up the great work and thank you for this video!

    I think one of these planes crashed in 1948 in the California desert, one the dead airmen was named Edwards....namesake of Edwards Air Force Base

      That's correct. It was actually the YB-49 all-jet version. They were doing stall tests and weren't able to recover. Capt. Glenn Edwards was his name. Before that, Edwards AFB had been known as Muroc.

    Super!It's difficult to be ahead of his time,as the brilliant designer J.K.
    NORTHROP was.

    Just hypothetically dreaming, what if the 35 was produced today, modern construction materials, and turbo prop engines? I'm certain with modern avionics, that the yaw stability problem would be easily solved.

    • @A_Short_History
      @A_Short_History  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well there is the B-2. No turboprops though.

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease ปีที่แล้ว

      +@JAEUFM The B-2 Spirit is the modern interpretation of the YB-35/YB_49 program. They are identical in size. Nobody would be able to build a reproduction of the YB-35 because AF Secretary Stuart Symington was so vindictive against Northrop that he had them destroy the engineering drawings.

    There is a flying wing with a wingspan bigger than a football pitch that goes up into space , I have been studying it , What's interesting the wing has an up and down curve , it's immense in size , they must have a hole fleet of them , I think it a multi national project and America and Russia are the two key players , it's a giant transport , I would say that several aerospace contractors east and west have been pooling there resources to build these huge craft , they make little sound, they have a dark coffee coloured outer non light reflective coating ,so they can merge with the night sky , and the size of them just blows you away. I think the military run it , because they have the resources, and they have a security blanket ,but i don't think it's a true military project.

      It's an alien liaison aircraft. Carries the back and forth from the mothership.

      @@robertspence831 It's not like any aircraft I have seen before ,you can tell it's been built for space, I think all possibilities have to be considered, it's the size of it that stuns me, it's definitely a multi national project , I don't think the US president knows about it ,he just signes the forms that gives them the funding ,in fact i think most world leaders, of the participating countries are not given the details ,as it works on a need to know basis , but it's obviously been in operation for quite some time , whatever the program is, it's huge.

    And they say they have never met aliens. These prototypes were developed from fallen alien spaceships in WW1 esp in Italy and Germany.
