Ciao! :D
Based on a pair of highly successful concept cars exhibited at the 1967 Montreal Expo, the Alfa Romeo Montreal had all the makings of a truly great car, incorporating hidden headlights, a low smooth body, and a sublime V8 engine that made it one of the rare cases of a production model far outshining the concept.
However, a mixture of bad timing, an overcomplicated design and an otherwise spartan package, the Alfa Romeo Montreal was far from the success hoped for by the carmaker, though regardless of its failure, the Montreal is today a much sought after classic, despite it still not having the same recognition among its contemporaries such as the Lamborghini Miura.
This, combined with a plethora of build quality problems and reliability concerns, led to what has often been dubbed the worst car Jaguar has ever made, and even today holds a mixed reception among enthusiasts, praising its luxury and performance, but condemning its horrendous construction.

Of all exotic motor cars of that era the Montreal was the only one I have ever truly wanted. Italian to the core, effortlessly stylish, fantastic engine, almost heroically impractical, expensive to run, exasperating at times but God it looks great.
Lovely looking car.
Just look at those Campagnolo bespoke wheels. I am having a crisis here.
My grandfather owns an ALFA Romeo Montreal, which still has the factory SPICA MFI. It’s a finicky and complicated system, but if it’s well maintained, it’s fine. Same goes for the Citroën Hydropneumatic system in my SM and Maserati Khamsin.
Great cars you own.
Hydropneumatic is pretty much problems free it certainly isn't high maintenance or requires constant adjustment.
Yeah, my grandad's Saturn-V is the same. Finicky, but maintain it right and one of these days Alex, straight to the moon!
Fantastic taste in cars there! My family…Citroen, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Holden, Kaiser,Ford, Nissan and Prince Skyline.
It is such a tragedy. The Montreal, today, is so blistering expensive. I would love to take one and build it just as it was intended with a mid-engine. But the prices make this idea totally unacceptable. Besides, it would be a shame to waste a good example of the Montreal as it is. Oh, and did I mention that this is one of my all time favorites in the car world, by far.
Never heard of it until now. Thank you for this.
They were a great car for sure. Those bloody pumps though really showed the motors heritage due to being very difficult to service. I believe however it was the inspiration for Toyotas best looking Celicas and the Mazda RX4 coup.
IMO the best looking car ever made, and I would hardly say its forgotten! It sold far more than any of the contemporary Lamborghini's did in that time period.
Belissima!! Just goes to show that Alfa Romeo can make cars that can easily stir the soul, just like their contemporaries from Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati. The Montreal was indeed an unfortunate victim of circumstances outside of its creators' control.
Beautiful example
What a beautiful car.
Fascinating as always, thank you again.
Gorgeous. Always loved them.
Great vlog. Loved this vehicle in its day
My father used to have one for years.
When I first saw an alpha romeo in 1988, I thought it was the coolest car mixing class with practicality.
Great video but to say it was in the same category as the Miura, apart from some Gandini styling flourishes, is incorrect. The Miura was in a way higher category. The Montreal was up against the Porsche 911 2.2/2.4, the Fiat Dino 2.4, the Citroen SM and the BMW 3.0 CSi/L. The base model Merak 2.0, Ferrari 208 GT4 and the Lamborghini Urraco P200 were much more expensive.
My brother had the opportunity to buy one in the early 80s for pennies but didn’t go for it.
Maserati Merek was V6 powered, the Bora was V0
The Montreal to me is what happens when you ask an Italian to design/build an American muscle-car. It’s so nicely proportioned too!
Not joking, I saw three of these in an Alfa mechanics last month. One of them is still there
Does anyone else run for the drinks cabinet when Ruairidh says ‘however’ or ‘unfortunately’? Somehow It’s always a sign of impending doom.
always thought the Montreal was a beautiful car. plenty of wacky cars from that era most which, good and bad, were killed off by the oil crisis.
Is that Gabriele Ferzetti (Marc-Ange Draco from OHMSS) at 03:58?
5:33 should NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) not be pronounced "knacka" rather than "naesa"?
Nice car. I've seen one in person at one of the Bicester Scrambles.
Looks like an Italian AMC Javelin.
What do you mean by "forgotten"? Just about every petrolhead knows it!
Definitely very well known. Just look at the breath taking prices mint ones fetch now! A big difference from when I bought one in the late 80s!
@@TIMMEH19991 But a pain in the a** to get running right, though.... friend of mine spent days on it!
Compared to Supercars by Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati, yes, forgotten.
@@michaeloreilly657 Only by you and a few others...., the rest of us remembers!
Beautiful car , another reason so expensive ...all V8 Engined cars made in europe had a charge of money that had to be paid to the u.s.a. ww2 reparation conditions ..thank you ...note what the eff do you think usa came to europe for in ww2 ..yeah for freedom ha ha ha just like now in Ukraine, to SUBVERT EUROPE ..sorry there i diverged a bit much ...
