Neil mentioned he was happy when people got something from his writing. Most people tend to focus on the first verse of the song when he mentions a gay friend (fictional or real). It's important, in my opinion to see the lyrics as a whole and how hero's can be everyday people like you and I doing what most might see as mundane. Everyone's life matters, not what the media pushes. God bless, RIP Neil Peart! You are missed!

Yes Neil wrote this song. Its about people being different but nobody gives them respect. They are nobody's hero. Wich is a shame.... we are all human beings... Rush is so awesome...

It's more than just a tribute to a friend. I know songs are subjective, but I think they're also pointing out that true heroes are not the ones we see on TV or winning a championship "not the handsome actor who plays the heroes role". They're the unsung, the ones running towards something others are running away from. The scientists, researchers, explorers.
Hope all is well, take care ✌

[1] The first verse deals with the AIDS-related death of a homosexual man named Ellis, a friend of Neil Peart when Peart lived in London. After the chorus, the second verse speaks of a girl who was murdered in Peart's hometown, Port Dalhousie. The girl is rumoured to have been Kristen French, one of Paul Bernardo's victims.[2]
It inspired the title for the paper Nobody's Hero: On Equal Protection, Homosexuality, and National Security published in The George Washington Law Review.[3]

I recall this song coming out in ‘93 which was a time that more and more people were coming out of the closet. I was born in ‘70. Around ‘89 I was at a girlfriends Christmas Eve dinner with two dozen of her family members. When they prayed at dinner the family matriarch included the fact that her teenage son had recently made it known that he was gay. I remember the look on his face of both pride and fear of being judged. My first thought was he was the bravest person I’ve ever met. So, four years later these lyrics were so poignant to me.

    Good Morn KK !
There are stories behind these verses,
1st one was Neil's friend he met when he traveled to England to seek his fortune before Rush.
2nd was the murders of schoolchildren Kristen French and Leslie Mahafee, Neil knew the family.

I have been a RUSH fan since '79 when they came out with Limelight. There are many many other great songs and messages from the greatest band of alltime. Have fun listening to these 3 fantastic musicians and know this that their themes will lift you and make you wiser.

“Nobody’s Hero" is a song by Canadian progressive rock band Rush, released as the third single from their 1993 album Counterparts. The first verse deals with the AIDS-related death of a homosexual man named Ellis, a friend of Neil Peart when Peart lived in London. After the chorus, the second verse speaks of a girl who was murdered in Peart's hometown, Port Dalhousie. The girl is rumoured to have been Kristen French, one of Paul Bernardo's (A Canadian Serial Killer) victims. It inspired the title for the paper Nobody's Hero: On Equal Protection, Homosexuality, and National Security published in The George Washington Law Review-(Wikipedia). Counterparts is a great album with great and meaningful lyrics some other great songs are Animate, Cold Fire, Stick It Out, Between The Sun & Moon, The Speed Of Love, Leave That Thing Alone, Everyday Glory. I know you might of reacted to some of these songs, but I’m just naming a few from the album. I know people probably wrote similar comments already, but who cares 😂

One of my favorite songs, and the lyrics are so thoughtful, which is typical of Neil. Did anyone else notice Neil switched his grip style on his left hand? I'm curious why he would do that.
"I didn't know the girl, but I knew her family. All their lives were shattered in a nightmare of brutality." I heard a rumor this was about Leslie Mahaffy (ie one of Paul Bernardo's victims). Anyone know if this is true?
Edit: I just read that it was supposedly about Kristen French, another victim of Paul Bernardo.

This song is where we come to the few problems of Rush, Yes. It certainly a heartfelt tribute to a friend (and in turn a song for many LGBTQ+ person's) But instead of Neil's normally individual and thoughtful lyrics, there is tacky sentiment. I'm not saying a sentimental song is an anathema, it just isn't as inspired. A GREAT song was hindered.

@@KristinKali Like I said, it IS sincere and heartfelt. They aren't pandering. However, lyrically, it lacks Peart's usual flair for language to a particular topic. I think he should have dug deeper. That's all. A good song...but could have been GREAT.

      "I see red
      And it hurts my head
      Guess it must be something
      That I read"
      "In a dog's life
A year is really more like seven
And all too soon a canine
Will be chasing cars in doggie heaven"
      "What would touch me deeper
      Tears that fall from eyes
      That only cry?
      Would it touch you deeper
Than tears that fall from eyes
      That know why?"
      "Stick it out
      Stick it out
      Stick it out
      Spit it out
      Stick it out
      Spit it out"
Rush has plenty of cheese out there, not counting their entire debut album. A song about unsung heroes though, doesn't even come close to being anywhere near the top of that list.
