we tried 285 for 20secs on some hi-vis 100% poly vests and the ink stuck to the transfer paper in some spots. does it need a second press?

you should always have a second press but your time can vary depending on press some use 15secs I've seen as low as 10 sec

I'm getting married in February and I want to buy Robes that are 97% polyester & 3% spandex. Would DTF still work on those? I don't want to pay the extra for embroidery since I'll need quite a bit of them.

yeah just heat press at a lower temp 265 to 280 it should be fine
