  • The South Africa Border War with Angola was a all out fight against communism and was fought between the South African Defence Force (SADF) and the Communist People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), an armed wing of the South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO).

    I´m originally from Cuba, I live in Europe, and I want to tell to the members of the SADF that fought in the border wars in the 70´s and 80´s: Thank you for taking a stand against communism in Southern Africa! The Soviet plan was to put in power and consolidate in the whole region secular dictatorships similar to the ones that existed in Europe. I know that you were not totally succesfully, but you foiled the original plans that were designed by the soviets and cuban goverments in the 1970´s!!

      And that’s not some heroic footage made for propaganda purposes, it actually depicts reality. These guys went in and won. Every single time.
      Almost always massively outnumbered, fighting in several countries at the same time, against the full military industrial might of the Soviet Union and Cuba, whilst under arms embargo, with only a tiny army, for 23 years.
      Whatever one thinks of Apartheid, the SADF’s achievements are just insane. No other fighting force in all of human history even came close to how good these guys were.

      I am so glad a clear distinction can be made between the old SADF browns nutria uniforms and the new SANDF camo. The association is very relevant to efficiency or in the case of the latter INEFFICIENCY! The old browns nutria after a lot of use became sun bleached and very "used" and took on a whole look that blended in exceptionally well with the African bush. After 2 tours / approx 1 year in the Ops area, mine took on a very interesting "hue" from slightly darker in the front to almost khaki bleached on the shoulders and back. Stay well my friend.

      @Seeing Red at the time the SADF was one of the most highly regarded military forces in the world. Like many other smaller countries we fought the Cold War hot. We fought against Communism which was and still is an evil thing in this world. 32 Battalion was regarded as the best light infantry unit in the world.
      Regarding the blood thirsty reputation, if you knew anything about wars in Africa you would know prisoners were seldom taken on both sides.
      I suggest you read some books on the subject. There has always been a mutual respect for all the belligerents involved.

      @moonbeam you are very misinformed. There is a huge departure between that which is opinion and that which is fact. What is fact is that the South African military was not FULLY engaged in the Angolan war but rather offered a conventional (Tanks, artillery etc.) capability to Unita in their defence of Jamba and Southern Angola because they had none versus 5 columns each Brigade strength of FAPLA/Cuban personnel and heavy armour advancing south to their position. The reason there was an interdiction on the part of the SADF to assist Unita was because in the very likely event Unita was defeated, it would open a much wider front for the SADF to defend with no buffer zone in Southern Angola (controlled by Unita )between SWA/Namibia and Angolan Fapla/Cuban forces.
      At the peak of the conflict, there were never more than 5000 SA combat personnel in support of Unita. It was NOT the whole SA army contrary to belief in uninformed circles.
      The end result is that SA 61Mech. destroyed 2 columns and what survived of the 2 brigades had to be absorbed into the remaining 3 that retreated from the Lomba river basin.
      Once the SA objectives had been achieved, the SADF withdrew and the Cuban General Sanchez Ochua was recalled to Havana and subsequently executed for dereliction of duty. The Soviet supreme commander was recalled to Moscow and given a dishonourable discharge.
      The withdrawal of SA forces has ALWAYS been a very sticky point of argument with Soviet/Cuban/Angolan propaganda trumpeting a resounding defeat and rout of SA forces in Southern Angola. To exacerbate this, the SA government and military did not respond to this propaganda and argue the contrary. They just kept quiet and for a very good reason....!!
      The combined FAPLA/Cuban Soviet backed forces took such a beating that SA were VERY afraid the Soviets (in order to regain military prestige) would up the ante with a full scale military intervention in Angola- a situation SA (with no willing allies in the world) would never have been able to cope with.
      This situation was very much a double edged sword for the SA government and the military top brass that were worried about a full scale Soviet intervention and as a result there was a scramble to put together a home grown nuclear missile defence system (with the assistance of the Israelis) to counter such an eventuality See th-cam.com/video/3asnLWPBoKY/w-d-xo.html
      The way Cmdt. Ferreira and 61Mech effectively countered the Soviet backed FAPLA/Cuban columns advancing south, using light armour instead of tanks is today a textbook case study at US Westpoint military academy.
      South African forces lost a total of 93 men KIA. th-cam.com/video/mZpjk_QWpac/w-d-xo.html

    South Africa was not at war with Angola. Initially at the behest of the CIA they went in to secure (from communist MPLA & it carried the approval of the AU) the area & was betrayed by the CIA & then withdrew. If they invaded with the intention of taking over thr joint why withdraw? Why make war with a country if you do not intend to invade it. SWAPO who started their liberation campaing by killing civilians and tribal leaders moved their bases to Angola when the SA Police investigated and s ermishes took place - so it became a millitary matter. SA was there to support Unita on Unita soil against the onslaught from PLAN. And if the Cubans did not interfere sending 1000's of troops inciting the situation Unita would probably have been able to work it out themselves. Seems quite comfodtable to forget the fact that in terms of land and tribe numbers Unita was the biggest. Anybody ever wondered why during all the time of that war the oil installations of the Americans were never attacked? How much of the Angolan budget consisted of tax income from this oil pumping? Where did they spend it?

    • @andrewdutoit9571
      @andrewdutoit9571 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Zommel Lemmoz The SADF went into Angola because the Americans requested it to save their interests. When American public sentiment turned like it did for them in Vietnam we had nomore support. So we had to retreat back to South West. We had no interest in any other Country, we only want what is ours.

      Cuba was a pawn of the Soviets, cuban forces entered Angola in what in fact was a civil war between different angolan political and military factions, all fighting for independence from Portugal, Cuba supported the MPLA who was ideologically communist and fought the FMLA and Unita, so the cuban forces fought to support a communist angolan goverment that was rejected by a large percent of the angolan population...So where is the "fighting for "freedom and self-determination"?? Learn from real history, No the communist and globalist propaganda!

    • @Teufelskoeche
      @Teufelskoeche 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@juanmar4712 Surisingly there are still admirers of the apartheid regime in South Africa. Juanma seems to be one of them. How can you forget that Cubans joined Angolans to defeat the South African apartheid regime. On the anniversary of the Iraq invasion, and with the United States gearing up for new, more devastating wars of aggression, Cuba’s role in Angola should be looked upon as an example - perhaps the only one in recent history - of a foreign policy that was proudly interventionist, genuinely committed to emancipation, and in many ways successful. If we are to discuss internationalism in the twenty-first century, we could start from few better places.

      Are you expressing a fact or an opinion? Are you old enough to remember? I served VERY PROUDLY with the SADF in Angola during this time. Racist? I was not in uniform to defend apartheid. I was in uniform to fight communism and communist expansionism in Africa - a FAILED ideology that promoted atheism, an ideology that stifled free thinking and free expression and a system that murdered over 100 million innocent people by their OWN communist governments!!!! In your infinite know-it-all wisdom is Apartheid a more evil system?
