My brother was a frogman. He said to me that the Greek frogmen (OYK) are build the way you said , from officers that trained in USA from Navy Seals and USA helped us. On the other hand our Green Berets were build with the help of British SAS after WW2 and that's the reason they share the same moto "Ο Τολμών Νικά" which is translated exactly "Who dares wins"...
Get wet and sandy ! One of my most favorite parts of the evolutions.....Great respect for the Greek OYK and the US Seals ! Allies and not only. Greek fought bravely on the allied side in both World Wars and then went on to participate in the Korean war.Greeks fought right next to the US Marines and very much impressed them with their heroism....enthusiasm...and excellent use of bayonet as they were getting ready to push back Chinese attacks. Greeks never forget the Truman doctrine that helped greatly in the war effort against the communists that wanted to turn the country into a soviet satellite. Just like Europe saw with the communist parties in Italy and France but luckily for those countries no bloody uprising took place. Indeed they are called U.D.Ts (O.Y.K. in Greek) in free translation and their nickname is "Frogs"@@JustAnotherArmyVet. Correct: it was back in the 1956 when οne Greek, Nikos Kartelias was sent to be trained in the States and was the only foreigner among the 20 (the rest were Americans) who passed in a total of 156 participants. On your other question: on 03.38 it says "All weather Frogs and for all circumstances". Every year, some 5 to 15 people maximum make it and become O.Y.K. Admiral Kiosses and Captain Dany Theofanides are the most emblematic Commanding Officers of the O.Y.K. Ιn the 80s a U.S.N. Seals team came to Greece to train with them. On the first day, the Americans refused to continue, packed up and left for home. The reason was simple: the Greek O.Y.K. always train under real fire. Not shots in the air, but directly against them.
Yes @@JustAnotherArmyVet, some times even less than that. The tests the are put to, in order to be accepted are so hard physically and emotionally that only a handfull can make it and earn the badge of a "frog" and admitance for official training. When I was in the Navy, out of a class of 20 persons, only 1 person made it and was successfully admitted. Once admitted they have a 3 months training. The final stage is "Hell's week": they are dropped in a deserted island with nothing else but a knife and they have to survive for a week. No one monitors them; they just drop them like castaways on an island and simply get back a week later to pick them up. Yes eventually along the years, some people died.
Greek special forces are in 3 categories , l.o.k means mountain patrol Μ.Α.Κ means Amphibious Expeditionary Forces which is more close to us navy and paratroopers or named as underwater demolition command. And the paratrooper which proudly I served my self for 1 year. Also the Greek navy seals we call them frogman too .
A few corrections to the above comment. It's more accurate to say that each branch of service in the Hellenic Armed Forces has their own special forces, and since the 1990s, Greece's Special Forces capability has grown substantially. As far as the Army goes, the LOK (Mountain Raiding Companies) no longer exist as an entity. They were dismantled in the 1970s and re-formed as the Raider Forces (Dynameis Katadromon). These forces were eventually expanded into a number of squadrons with different capabilities - the Raider Squadrons (Mires Katadromon) - light infantry, the Paratrooper Squadrons (Mires Alexiptotiston) - airborne, and the Amphibious Raider Squadrons (Mires Amfivion Katadromon) - amphibious. The first two are part of the 1st Raiders/Paratroopers Brigade, while the amphibious squadrons (MAK) became the 13th Special Operations Command. I would say they are closer to MARSOC than the Hellenic Navy's DYK (Underwater Demolitions Command).
Incorrect Sir You are wrong let me help, L.O.K was form August 1947 in Vouliagmeni Athens and it is not mean "mountain patrol... " after all ther , job is not patrolling Mountains .. there job is "special operations" and it means " Mountain. Commando . Company . " or Mountain . Raiders . company ! ... M.A.K also it is not an "expeditionary force " is and Amphibious .Raiding. Squadron !
You forgot the GREEK MARINES of the 32nd Marines Regiment my friend ,which i served in the 90s that do all those things that you mentioned , mountain patrol ,paratroopers, amphibious landings {which only the Greek Marines do in Greece } Underwater demolition in Greece is done only from The Greek navy seals and not by M.A.K like you mention ,if you were for real a Greek paratrooper you should know better then that...A
Very nice work and to the point. MYK is the NAVY's Underwater Demolition Command. It comprises of 5 OYKs meaning Underwater Demolition Teams. OYK 1, 2 and 5 (reserve team) are specialized in Unconventional Warfare. OYK 3 specializes in landing operations support and OYK 4 specializes in mine clearing operations. MYK is also in charge of underwater delivery craft teams, training facilities and the base personnel. These teams are organized like the US NAVY UDTs and do follow the US SEALS training program. In addition to this members of the OYK occasionally participate in training schools of the British SBS and the French Foreign Legion. It is very common to have combined exercises with US SEALS. In addition to Hellenic NAVY, the Hellenic Coast Guard has it's own Underwater Missions Unit, that is called MYA/LS and it specializes in Counter Terrorism Operations and VIP protection at sea or in coastal areas. This unit also trains with the US SEALs on a regular basis. The Hellenic Army also has 6 Amphibious Raider Squadrons called MAKs, that are Commando units tasked to protect or recapture minor, mainly uninhabited islands with in Greek territory. These units are different than the Army's Marine Brigade (Marines belong to the Greek Army) that specializes in classic landing operations of a larger scale. Usually the weapons used by these forces are US made M4s, M203GLs while they also use FN MINIMI SAW (Belgian M249s) and FN MAG LMGs (Belgian M240B). Other weapons used are the FN SCAR, FN MP90 and HK MP5SD (silenced).
Thank you so much!! I definitely did a little research before I reacted to this video. I wanted to have a better understanding of what I was watching. So, the Hellenic Navy is the Greek Navy. Where did they get the “Hellenic” name from?
@@JustAnotherArmyVet The official name of Greece is Hellenic Republic. The name Hellas comes from Homeric Greek (before 800 BC) from the words Hel meaning Sun (Helios, Heliocentric) and Las meaning stone. So the name Hellas means the country of Sun and Stones. The name Greece was used by the Romans, from the Latin name Graecia. The Latin name of the nation was Graeci, which is the origin of the English name Greeks. Those names, in turn, trace their origin from Graecus, the Latin adaptation of the Greek name Γραικός, which means 'Greek', but its etymology remains uncertain. Aristotle had the first surviving written use the name Graeci, in his Meteorology. He wrote that the area around Dodona and the Achelous River was inhabited by the Selli and a people, who had been called Graeci but were called Hellenes by his time. From that statement, it is asserted that the name of Graeci was once widely used in the region of Epirus and the rest of the western coast of Greece. It thus became the name by which the Hellenes were known to the Italic peoples, who were on the opposite side of the Ionian Sea. According to Hesiod, in his Catalogue of Women, Graecus was the son of Pandora and Zeus and gave his name to the people who followed the Hellenic customs. His brother Latinus gave his name to the Latins. The official name for the Greeks is Hellenes and it originates from a small city kingdom in the region of Thessaly. The inhabitants around 1100 BC called them selves Hellenes or Myrmidons and had a king named Achilles. Through time, the use of the name Hellenes spread beyond Thessaly and by the 5th century BC all the inhabitants of Greece that shared a common culture and religion called themselves Hellenes.
@@JustAnotherArmyVet from Hellenic Republic thats the official name of Greece. Greece derives from the Latin name Graecia which was used by ancient Romans.
Great video mate! As for the riffles they use are M4 and HK416. The Greek frogmen belong to the tier 1 special forces also known as special operation forces (SOF). Those elite teams are equipped with M4s and Hk416s. The tier 2 and tier 3 special forces are using the m16. And the rest of the army like the infantry etc are using the g3a3.
They train very very often with the American seals and I've heard the best from Americans about our force they have almost identical tactics...but the greeks train To fight in their land...Americans train To fight elsewhere...so rhe greeks I think are a bit better just becaye they train at their workplace so more experience but America has more war experience these years
It’s actually the white opposite. Americans train to be able to fight anywhere, whether at home or abroad. This adaptability makes them far more lethal. Greece is a defensive country and defense is always easier than offense. US specializes in both and we’ve seen it in recent event (training Ukrainians in defending their lines and also training them for the counteroffensives).
The first Greek Seal was trained in US. So the greek Navy Seals honor their legacy. However due to the local challenges they have developed other tactics to meat certain demands
P.S. The "thing" hanging from the waist were the swimming fins. They take them off on land but they will need them again when they will go back in the water, after their mission, so they take them along. The thing on the paratroopers hand is an altimeter, so that he would now when to open his chute. The subtitle said "Frogmen for all weather and conditions". And I did forget to mention the Hellenic Airforce's Combat Rescue Squadron, that are the Airforce SOFs.
@@JustAnotherArmyVet Looks like part of the rebreather system, There is a pipe going into it. The rebreather is a diving system used by SEAL type units, instead of the normal scuba diving gear, so that they will not create bubbles betraying their position to the enemy.
In WW2 the Americans who came to Greece to 'help' the Greeks only hindered them. They would run out of food and water because they couldn't ration them properly, and the Greeks had to share theirs with the Yanks. Many missions failed because Yankie C.O's took charge, who had no experience in similar situations. Having served with both Greek and Yankie forces, the Yanks may have more body strength, but cannot handle the conditions of weather, hunger, etc. They don't have the stamina that the Greeks have.
Its not an Ocean is the Aegean Sea part of the Mediterranean sea. The question you asked about about the Greek in the video said "frogmen of all weather and any situation". As of Greek carriers Greece has thousands :) they called the end Aegean Islands. Thanks for the video
The first Greek that trained and finished the school in the US in the late fiftys was Nickos Kartelias, their called underwater demolition sf, the Greek subtitles was saying frogman any time any day! They use the m4 machine gun!

That thing on his belly is a close circulation rebreather. On 3.25 the translation is Frogmen of any weather and conditions Thanks for this great video. Greetings from Greece.
Our tier1 SOFs are Special Paratroopers Section and Z'(6th) Unit of Amfibious Expeditions. We also have our own navy seals, OYK (Team of Underwater Demolitions) and our own Army Rangers, ΛΟΚ (Squadron of Mountainous Expenditios)
The interesting thing with these forces is that in Greece are divided into many sections specialising each in some kind of different warfare and not only that. I know of an experiment that the Airforce did using a specific missile of a specific aircraft and it was used unorthodoxally in a completely different task and they asked their help to use one kind of equipment. And of course the Greek seals boarded a small dingy and did their part. The result was excellent and in reality the result was way more than expected successful. I really can't get into details cause this is a highly classified piece of info and as a reserve I am bound still to the obligation of keeping those details in the dark as imprisonment is the penalty for revealing those top secret details.
The reason you see so many similarities is that the greek army is build on US standards, army command structure, training methods, combat doctrine, engagement rules, you name it. Just tweaked enough to fit our situation
Thank you for your video :) Just so you know...The people that you see with the camo uniform they are from the Special Forces unit...The Green Beret. By the way it's quite feasible to visit Greece and don't be lured to visit islands especially on the summer. The islands are literally tourist traps and is better of visiting from September to November and from March to May. I would highly recommend Peloponesse peninsula and with a car to visit it all. The rates of renting an apartment are way more cheap than any island in the summer time. Also Peloponesse doesn't have to be jealous of beaches or any other sights the islands have neither the food rates which are far cheaper and way more tasty than of islandic Greece. Also the roads especially the national ones in Peloponesse are the more recent and safe to travel. You will be able to see some of the best sites like Ancient Olympia or Mycanae the homeland of the general of Greeks that besieged Troy. Then there is Sparta and best of all is the city of Kalamata with the best olive and oil production of Greece and the whole world. Kalamata is a city by the sea and nearby outskirts like Diros with its caves are fantastic. Don't midd, if you finally decide to visit the medieval city of Monemvasia and prior to visiting don't hesitate to drop me a message to recommend a special place where there is a chapel unique in the world which is listed on Guiness World book of records. I am keeping it secret what makes it so special in order to be left astound when you visit it and see it.

The think under his belie is a type of scuba gear that doesn't make bubbles so the enemy can't find you underwater but you have limit on depth operation
These military corps are one of the best in the world, because to become an OYK you have to finish one of the most difficult trainings that lasts 6 months, in these 6 months you are not given anything, at any time you can fail. There are schools that 300 candidates go and fail all, there are cases where one person was successful in school after years, it does not matter if they go to any school and 300 can all be cut. One of the tests that you have to pass through is to drown and be brought back to life. Really, if I had to fight these people I would be scared. Even if I have 20 years of experience.
The VERY FIRST Greek "Navy SEAL" was the guy who FOUND the Greek Navy Seals (in 1957) and he was trained in USA in US Navy Seals. The NOTORIOUS Nikos Kartelias! And yes, we don't calling them "SEAL" (Sea-Air-Land) but "Underwater Demolution Command". Originally was called "Underwater Demolution Squads". So, first was called "O.Y.K" (Omades Ypovrychion Katastrofon, "Underwater Demolution Squads"), then they're called "M.Y.K." (Monada Ypovrychion Katastrofon, "Underwater Demolution Unit") and now is "D.Y.K" (Dioikisi Ypovrychion Katastrofon, "Undewater Demolution Commad"). So, as you imagine, first it was JUST A SMALL SQUAD of the entire Greek Navy, then became a LARGE UNIT and now is an ENTIRE HUGE INDIVIDUAL COMMAND of the Greek Navy, because during the decades Greeks gave MUCH RESPECT to this specific Unit and it's actually the "SPEAR BLADE" of the entire Greek Forces. The US have A LOT units and using them, Rangers, Delta, Marines, Seal, etc... but we have THEM, as the TOP ELITE of all. ALL their gear is EXACTLY like US Navy Seal, exactly... but... since we don't have the money of USA, these Greek "Seal" have MUCH LESS equipment than their American brothers. So, they do have the same vests, uniforms, the same rifles, pistols, sniper rifles, machine-gun, sub-machine,... but they mostly HUGE LACK of the other US equipment (like satelite phones, modern communications, modern night vision goggles, etc).
It's "Ο.Υ.Κ." for Underwater Demolition Team and "Μ.Υ.Κ." for Underwater Demolition Unit. The difference is that the Team is part of the Special Forces Branch of the Army, and the Unite is part of the Navy

@@AEKLibero ah, thanks for clarifying! I appreciate you taking the time to write that.
Incorrect Sir You are wrong let me help, L.O.K was form August 1947 in Vouliagmeni Athens and it is not mean "mountain patrol...

Thats a fair and valid statement.

If conscription is the male obligation to get trained and service for a limited time 1year, to prepaired if war comes, then yes,
It is considered among top in NATO.

It says "Βατραχανθρωποι παντός καιρου και συνθηκων" .... It means "Frogmen of all weathers and conditions"
Batrahi = frog, and anthropoi = human, men (you also say it... Anthropology)
(Vatrahanthopi)
In short we call them "FROG's"
Ah thank you !
me I served black berets recoinacence, I can't go there?
I can but the heart follows but the body can't keep up

O Y K UNDERWATER DEMOLITION TEAMS
Thank you!
so they called Ο. Υ. Κ and the weapons they use is m4 and m16
Thanks!
MAK means Μονάδα (Unit) Αμφίβιων (Amphibious) Καταδρομών (Commando) but in English it would sound better as "Amphibious Assault Unit" and ΟΥΚ as you mentioned very correct means Oμάδα (Team) Υποβρύχιων (Underwater) Καταστροφών (Destruction)! They are both part of the special forces or navy seals of Greece but i would consider ΟΥΚ the elite of navy seals
Awesome!
oyk thats what there called
Thanks!
